VFL Tigers' fighting win

Brenton Mann
AFL Media
Apr 27, 2019

The rugged-up, travelling Tiger Army that made the trek out to Casey Fields were treated to a fierce and rugged contest that was alive until the final moments.

Richmond withstood a barnstorming Casey to eventually clinch a tense one-point win, 7.10 (52) to 8.3 (51).

The Tigers held an 18-point lead at three-quarter time, eyeing of its third win for the year from as many starts.

The Demons however had the scent of an upset in their nostrils, as they quickly slammed on four goals to one in the final term.

Casey made its intentions clear in the last quarter, as they exerted their dominance in the air and converted their chances up forward.

The Tigers were scrounging for a goal and Jake Aarts was the man to deliver in the clutch moment.

With the Demons surging, Aarts drilled his set-shot to arrest back a slither of momentum, handing the Tigers an 11-point lead.

Casey was not done yet.

The hosts answered back and trailed by just five points with under six minutes to play.

The Demons levelled the scores a minute later, with the Tigers looking bereft of firepower up forward.

Richmond was handed the advantage via a rushed behind; a lead it wouldn’t surrender.

Ryan Garthwaite played his best game for the year and made the crucial final spoil of the game that halted the Demons' final foray forward.

Connor Menadue was another who stood tall in the final term, swooping on the loose ball created by Garthwaite and calmly kicked to a contest on the Grandstand Wing.

The Tigers were able to lock the ball in the contest as the siren sounded.

This was a win born from fight, and trust in one another.

What made the win more meritorious was the fact Richmond was down two rotations in the second half, and one rotation for 99 per cent of the game.

Jack Graham’s return to VFL football didn’t go as planned as he lasted no more than two minutes before leaving the field with hamstring awareness, which he iced immediately.

Maverick Weller’s return from injury only lasted a half, after he took no further part in the match following half-time with back soreness.

However that did nothing to dampen the spirit or will of this connected Tiger outfit.

Shai Bolton returned after AFL duties, adding silk and spark in gloomy and blustery conditions.

Bolton brought his trick-bag on the road to Casey and slotted the opening goal of the game with customary panache.

The blustery conditions didn’t lend themselves to pretty football, and as the Demons looked to transition through the corridor Steve Morris sprang into action, instigating the turnover.

Richmond surged the ball forward, with Bolton swooping on the crumb; he then ducked, weaved and found space to snap the goal.

He also used his cat-like agility to exert pressure on Casey, be it through the midfield or up-forward, which is a layer of his game that is gaining momentum week by week.

Another who impressed in a rugged opening term was first-year midfielder, Riley Collier-Dawkins.

The towering midfielder was powerful and fierce in the contest, consistently getting his hands free to feed his fellow midfielders on the outside.

With members of his fellow draft class shining at AFL level, Collier-Dawkins produced a performance which made the throng of Tiger faithful stand up and take notice.

Collier-Dawkins has shown flashes of his potential and ability this year, but this was his best, all-round midfield performance for the Club.

Casey cashed in on its aerial ascendency late in the first quarter, finishing with a rush of three goals to take a two-goal lead into the first change.

The Tigers’ usual watertight defence was cracking a little under the Demons’ pressure.

The hosts kicked the opening goal of the second term before the Tigers tightened the screws.

Richmond’s defensive coverage behind its attack returned, and it trapped the ball in its forward half for large chunks of the quarter.

Speedy forward Dan Butler worked into the game after quarter time, having a direct hand in the Tigers’ only goal of the term.

Butler stalked a Casey defender, trapping him holding the ball inside forward 50.

His set-shot held up in the breeze, with the ball falling into the lap of Mabior Chol, who happily snapped the goal from close range.

The Tigers did a lot right in the second term, for very little reward; that changed in the third term.

Jacob Townsend asserted his authority on the contest and had a direct hand in two goals to kickstart the third quarter.

Firstly, Townsend was proactive in a forward contest, swooped on a loose ball and drilled home his first for the day.

He then set up another.

While most players struggled to read the ball in flight, Townsend tracked the drop of the ball superbly.

After clutching a mark in the corridor, he played on swiftly, flicked a handball to Butler, who put the ball into the path of Callum Moore and Chol eventually finished with the goal.

Butler would then scorch past a line of Casey defenders, pump the ball inside 50, crumb it and snap truly in what was a tremendous solo effort.

The Tigers set up the win with a four-goal-to-nil third quarter and then held their nerve in the final term to travel home with the win.

CASEY           3.0       4.1       4.2       8.3 (51)

RICHMOND    1.0       2.5       6.8       7.10 (52)

Bolton will come in straight for Jack. McRae said the match committee took two hours to decide who to omit for Jack so Bolts was stiff to be dropped in the first place.

Was an enjoyable good old fashioned cold day at the footy. To win away against this mob was an awesome effort.

Bolton was simply brilliant today. Played full time as a mid and ran the game out strong. He was outstanding with his intent to tackle and bring his team mates into the game. The way he moves through heavy traffic and his ability to make things happen is similar to Edwards. He was tough today and BOG :clapping

Menadue played another strong game controlling the half back line. His improvement this year to add grunt to his game has been dramatic. Strong in the contest and spoils when he needs to has been very impressive. Love the way he is running and his kicking is sublime. Could be playing seniors as he is too good for this level :shh

Townsend is unbelievable tough...smashes in so hard you hear the contact from the other side of the ground. He is jumping at the ball and hitting packs very hard. Along with Collier Dawkins he was instrumental in getting us in the game start of the 3rd quarter.

Collier Dawkins played his best game for the Tigers so far. Was simply outstanding in the 3rd playing in the middle. Hits pack hard for a young player and is tough. Possess good pace and always seems to get a handball away when being tackled. He is going to be a beauty for the Tigers for many years to come :clapping

Naish is also growing the more he plays. He surprises me how hard he can be at time as he puts his body on the line for a slight player. He runs all day and loves to kick which is his main strength. A very good game today.

Soldo dominated the big log for the oppo. Took a few big pack marks during important stages. Solid.

Egg was good today mostly playing on bigger opponents. Loves to spoil and doesn't take a backward step. Love the ball in his hands and I think he has a future.

Gathwaite was the general down back along with Beasley. He won so many contests and just manages to get a fist in just at the right time...always. The other thing he does well is talk...he doesn't shut up :clapping

I liked the game of Butler, his best performance of the year. Used his pace to advantage and made a few big tackles. Must continue this standard at the very least should he be looked at for promotion.

Miller had an absolute horrible day at the office. No confidence and was being well beaten by smaller opponents in marking contests. He would want to improve and improve fast should he want to be around next year.

Turner was solid today playing on the wing. He looks to be a great athlete and posses a good leg when kicking. Has baulked up beautifully and is starting to use this in contests. Good player.

Graham played a few minutes then sat the rest of the game out.

English is a no nonsense ball player who doesn't do anything at an elite standard, he just plays footy. His best asset is his attack on the footy and the man. Will be an interesting watch throughout the year.

Moore was our best tall forward as he didn't stop presenting all day. Kicked 1 goal but should have had 3 as he missed 2 sitters. Love his pace and the way he launches at the ball in marking contests. Would love him to have an opportunity to play some games in the seniors.

Chol played a typical Chol game. Flashes of brilliance mixed in with inept efforts and the odd solid effort. Lifted when he went into the ruck but we really need more out of him.

CCJ battled away but it wasn't a great day for tall forwards as it was a contested brand of footy in blustery conditions.

Weller and Aarts played half forward and played their roles on the day. Nothing outstanding and I believe Weller only played the first half. Aarts did kick an important goal in the last after a good mark.

Think I covered most and will reiterate it was a slog but enjoyable :thumbsup

Perfect response by my boy Bolton :shh A less mature individual would have cracked the sads at being harshly dropped like he was. But he's gone back and killed. Needs to be rewarded now :shh :shh

Bolton best-afield as Tigers edge out Casey

Paul Amy,
Cranbourne Leader
28 April 2019

SQUEEZED out, Shai Bolton quickly and assertively made his case to get back in.

Dropped from Richmond’s AFL team, the dashing right-footer was among the best-afield as the VFL Tigers claimed a one-point victory over the Casey Demons in a spirited Round 4 match at Casey Fields on Saturday.

There were 25 possessions, one goal and 11 tackles for Bolton.

And there were glowing words for him from Richmond coach Craig McRae.

He said Bolton was stiff to be demoted after “arguably his best two AFL games ever’’.

“I just think it showed his growth as a player … he’s only 20 years of age and he comes back here and he’s been dominating VFL footy for the first part of the season,’’ he said.

“Again today he looked a class above with his 25 and 11 tackles.’’

While Bolton contributed some silk to the Richmond effort, Jacob Townsend supplied the stone, his hip-and-shoulder bumps giving him a physical presence. Two Casey players took a while to shake off hits from Townsend, who had 19 disposals and nine tackles.

“Towner’ is one of those battering rams for us and sets the scenes for our young kids and makes them feel a bit stronger around the contest,’’ McRae said.

“His leadership this year has really stood up … great to have him as part of our team.’’

Only six goals were scored in the first half and Casey led by eight points at half time.

But Richmond produced a brilliant burst in the first 12 minutes of the third quarter, Townsend, Mabior Chol, Callum Moore and Dan Butler slotting goals.

Chol’s came after an end-to-end passage that showed the Tigers were getting run into their game.

The Demons were held to a point in the third term, but they finished strongly in the final quarter.

Captain Mitch White and impressive young ruckman Liam Buxton goaled to trim the Richmond lead to five points.

Tiger small forward Jake Arts took a fine juggling mark and made the set-shot to push it back out to 11.

Casey came again, Declan Keilty booting his second goal and then former captain Jack Hutchins making a tight shot.

The scores were level into the 24th minute as a match that had yielded only 15 goals was given the decoration of a tight, tense finish.

Would the 16th goal decide it? No. It came down to a point, rushed through the Richmond goals. Connor Menadue had a kick from 50m and big Buxton thumped it through as the Tigers went one point in front. That was where they stayed in a short quarter. It was Richmond’s first win at Casey Fields (but it was only its second visit to the Cranbourne east ground).

The Tigers had 18 AFL-listed players, but they fell in behind first-gamer Chad Harris as they came off the ground. Harris, 20, from Sorrento, had been selected as the 23rd player.

“I really like Chad,’’ McRae said. “We really like what he’s got to offer. He’s hard at the contest …. he looks like he’s capable of playing VFL footy, that’s for sure.’’

Adding merit to the victory, Jack Graham had hamstring tightness and went off early in the first quarter and Mav Weller sat out the second half due to back soreness.

McRae said although Richmond trailed at half time, it had the better of the second quarter and the signs were encouraging.

“That was the message at halftime, just don’t get despondent by the scoreboard,’’ he said.

“We’d played it on our terms but we didn’t get reward for it. We had to stick to the process and we wanted to open it up a bit, try to get some speed into the game. But we had to get to work. Our contest was really strong and we got out the back a couple of times.’’

For the Demons, first-year ruckman Buxton had 14 disposals, 31 hit-outs and kicked two goals against a worthy opponent in Ivan Soldo.

Hutchins, fitter and leaner this year, went into the match unwell but battled hard as a target in attack; Josh and Corey Wagner ran relentlessly; and Oscar McDonald was stout in defence.

Mitch Gent had 22 disposals and, in his 99th game, James Munro never stopped hustling.

Casey coach Jade Rawlings said he was pleased with his team’s endeavour in a match he called “one of the best VFL games I reckon we’ve been in for a little while, a genuine contest for four quarters, both teams having a serious crack around the ball’’.

“Their class probably was just a bit too much for us at the start of the third quarter,’’ he said.

“We weren’t as ready as we needed to be after the break and it ended up being a mountain a bit too high for us to climb in the end.’’

The game on Wednesday night was terrible to watch too imo.
Some games just aren’t a great spectacle but as long as we win, I’m ok with that.
Plus Bolton played well and should be back in the side where he belongs.

Win, win.

VFL and development coach, Craig McRae provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in last Saturday’s Round 4 win over Casey at the Casey Fields.

Shai Bolton

25 disposals, 11 tackles, eight clearances, eight inside 50s & one goal

“It was really pleasing for him to come back from AFL football with his attitude, and he returned above the level. His defensive pressure is really standing out. He looks ready to bounce back into AFL opportunity.”

Patrick Naish

25 disposals, 14 handball receives, seven inside-50s & three clearances

“Continues his great form, over a number of weeks now he’s been among the high possession winners for us. Defensively he’s been really impacting, his contest work has been really standing out, which is really pleasing to see.”

Connor Menadue

23 disposals, four marks, five rebound-50s and threes inside-50s

“Is another one who returned from AFL, playing really good footy. He came back and looks a really different player at VFL level. His leadership really stood out at different moments of the game. Again another one looking to go back into the AFL.”

Jacob Townsend

19 disposals, four marks, nine tackles, five clearances, five inside-50s & one goal

“His pressure in the contest has been outstanding. He’s really hard around the ball, his tackle numbers are high, with nine for the day. He kicked a great goal for us at a critical part of the game. His leadership is something that’s taken a step forward this year.”

Riley Collier-Dawkins

18 disposals, 15 contested possessions, seven tackles & four clearances

“Looks a real promising player for us. A big, strong inside midfielder. A lot of handballs on the day - 18 disposals on the day, 12 of those handballs - high tackle numbers again with seven. His ability to break the game open in the third quarter was critical to the outcome. He’s playing some great footy.”

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith

17 disposals, six handball receives & three rebound-50s

“Playing off half-back, he looks like he’s a promising type with his left foot, and uses the ball really well, runs and carries. It wasn’t a great day for the run-and-carry, but his critical one-on-one wins stood out.”

Ivan Soldo

14 disposals, six tackles, 43 hit-outs, eight clearances & four inside-50s

“Dominated the hit-outs and had six tackles, so his work around the contest was really good, and it was really pleasing late in the game where he showed some leadership. He controlled some structures around the stoppages which he hadn’t been doing in previous years. That shows his growth as a player. He had some nice intercept marks late in the game also.”

Fraser Turner

12 disposals, three marks & two clearances

“Huge work-rate for a young player. I think he racked up 16kms on the GPS, which is phenomenal running on the day from a wing. He’s learning structural-wise, but he’s a promising player in the making.”

Luke English

10 disposals, four tackles & two clearances

“Played a little bit of forward and a little bit of midfield. A low possession rate, but certainly around the contest, getting the game going our way was something that really stood out; particularly in the last quarter when we needed some fresh legs and drive.”

Dan Butler

10 disposals, five handball receives, four tackles, five inside-50s & one goal

“The game was difficult to impose his speed on, but when he did, he certainly changed the way the game was being played. He found some space a couple of times and really gave some drive by running and carrying the ball. He kicked a nice goal from follow-up contest-to-contest work and he looks ready for AFL opportunity when it presents.”

Mabior Chol

Nine disposals, four marks, two goals & four tackles

“A difficult game for talls. It was pleasing again - as it’s been in recent weeks - he may not be having a good quarter, but he’s finding a way to impact the game, be it in the air or on the ground. He finished the game with two goals which is a great example of consistency week-to-week.”

Callum Coleman-Jones

Nine disposals, seven hit-outs & seven tackles

“Limited impact in the game, but it was pleasing for him to get seven tackles on the day, which is a really good result for our big guys to impact the game that way. It was a difficult day aerially and he’ll learn a lot from the day.”

Callum Moore

Eight disposals, three tackles, three spoils & one goal

“As mentioned previously about the talls, it was so windy and difficult to judge the flight and the aerial contest, but he kicked 1.2 and could have quite easily finished with three goals. When we only kicked seven goals for the game, he could have had a big impact on the result. But it was pleasing to see him show his strengths, particularly at ground level.”

Maverick Weller

Six disposals, one tackle & one clearance

“Played the first half and hurt his back and didn’t take any further part in the game.”

Jake Aarts

Five disposals, one goal, three spoils & two tackles

“Only low possession rate, but he had high impact in the game, particularly his contest work. He kicked a critical, match-winning goal in a really clutch moment. He took his chance from 35 meters out when others weren’t on the day with the breeze, which ended up being the match-winner. His contest work looks ready for AFL opportunity.”

Ryan Garthwaite

Four disposals, 12 spoils & three marks

“Had 12 spoils on the day, which was a team-high. Anything that came in his direction, he won his one-on-ones. He offered terrific support in our mechanics behind the ball - he’s such a great leader in that regard.”

Ben Miller

Four disposals, three spoils & three rebound-50s

“Playing a little bit of forward and a little bit of back at the moment, we’re trying to work on his versatility as a player. Another tall player who struggled to impact aerially, but it’s a work in progress.”

Jack Graham

“Unfortunately Jack hurt himself in the warm-up and was done after five minutes.”
