Danger game.

No Danger Game

We don't show up with the right mindset, go in thinking the games won then it is very much a danger game.

The AFL site is tipping up to win by 4 goals.
Match preview: Western Bulldogs v Richmond

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday May 4, 7:25pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 23, 2018: Richmond 15.8 (98) defeated Western Bulldogs 14.11 (95)

The Bulldogs challenged last season's minor premiers in the final round. Richmond star forward Jack Riewoldt kicked his 600th career goal in a bag of five, Dogs midfielder Jack Macrae had 43 touches and Brad Lynch's shot to pinch the result with seconds remaining hit the post. The win proved to be the Tigers penultimate in a record-breaking 22-game MCG winning streak.

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: Four losses in a row have the Dogs languishing two wins behind the eighth-placed Tigers. It's too early to say season-defining, but it's getting nearer that point.

What it means for Richmond: A spate of key injuries and two big defeats to Collingwood and GWS had the warning lights flashing. Three straight wins since then, led by Shane Edwards, Dylan Grimes and co., has shown the Tigers' maturity. They can't afford to drop these games in a log-jammed top eight.

How the Western Bulldogs win: The Bulldogs are 18th for goalkicking accuracy and have kicked more goals than behinds only once in 2019. If they clean up that vital part of the equation their contested work has them more than in the game.

How Richmond wins: Build the brick wall at half-back like they did against the Dees. Nick Vlastuin and Bachar Houli controlled proceedings and the tap-on Tigers kept the ball moving for the mosquito fleet up forward.

The stat: The previous five games between Richmond and the Bulldogs have been decided by 19 points or less.

The match-up: Sydney Stack v Bailey Smith

The draftees have had very different paths to their AFL dreams but are both having an exciting influence. Stack's bump on Jack Viney is still reverberating, and the buzz in the crowd when he's near the ball is tangible. Smith has settled into the midfield group and looks worth the pick No.7 used to obtain his services.

It’s a big week for: Luke Beveridge

Premiership coach Luke Beveridge will take charge of his 100th game for the Bulldogs. He has a winning percentage of 54.55 and needs to use every inch of his experience to arrest the slide.

Big call:
Dustin Martin back in the Brownlow votes with 4+ goals

Prediction: Richmond by 24 points

Dogs match up well on us, we have to win these types of games, no matter how ugly it is.

WESTERN BULLDOGS v RICHMOND (Patrick Bowden Cup)

Saturday May 4, 7.25pm at Marvel Stadium

How to watch on Fox Footy: Channel 504 from 7.15pm, with the Saturday Stretch team of Brad Johnson, Dermott Brereton and Sarah Olle.

Bulldogs’ burning question: Are things at breaking point?

If not, it’s very close. The Dogs have lost their past four games, including defeats at the hands of Gold Coast and Carlton. Yes they’re young and yes they’re contested footy and clearance game remains strong, but their inability to convert inside 50 and territory dominance is terrible — in fact, the worst Champion Data has ever recorded. Premiership coach Paul Roos said during the week that the Dogs’ dive down the ladder since winning the 2016 flag is “unprecedented” and deserves more attention. They can’t afford an ugly loss to Richmond.

Richmond’s burning question: How will they cope without Jack Riewoldt for a couple of months?

They coped fine in Round’s 3 to 5 and should be fine for the next eight. Why? Because their system is back. Over the past month, the Tigers have ranked first for time in forward half differential and averaged a league-high 33 turnovers per game, according to Champion Data. That is the Richmond brand — which was the trademark of its 2017 premiership — to a tee. Hard to see it changing anytime soon.

Fox Footy expert tipsters’ verdict: Western Bulldogs 1 — Richmond 4

View of the game from the enemy ....

Four things to watch: Bulldogs v Tigers

westernbulldogs.com.au
May 3, 2019 12:00PM

1. Lllllllllllllllllllloyd
Sam Lloyd has settled nicely into life as a Bulldog.
And this week he gets the chance to take on his former side for the first time.
The ex-Tiger has had an immediate impact in red, white and blue, and leads the goalkicking tally with nine majors from six games.
He’ll no doubt be keen to have a big impact on Saturday night.

2. Can the Dogs capitalise?

It’s been the story of the Dogs’ season, so far.
Only once – in round two against Hawthorn – have they kicked more goals than behinds, but in four of six games they’ve had equal or more scoring shots than their opponents.
Now is the time for the boys in red, white and blue to turn that record around.
They’ve got multiple avenues to goal, and will need to find a way to score against a Richmond side that has conceded just 67 and 42 points over the past two weeks.

3. Injury-hit Tigers find a way

No Riewoldt, no Cotchin, no Rance, no Astbury.
The Tigers might be missing some big names, but they keep finding a way and have won their past three matches.
New recruit Tom Lynch (17 goals) poses a big forward threat, while the Tigers’ experienced brigade have stepped up and found some support from fresh blood in the likes of Sydney Stack, Jack Ross and Liam Baker.

4. Tight tussles
Very little has separated the Bulldogs and Tigers in recent times.
In their past five meetings, the Bulldogs have come away with the points on four occasions.
However, the Tigers won the most recent clash in the final round of last year.
Three of the past five games have been decided by less than a kick, with the other two margins 10 and 19 points – an average margin of 7.8 points.

And Dimma's view of the Dogs:

“They’ve troubled most sides (in 2019), I reckon. They’re always in the game,” Hardwick said.

“I look at them at their best and they’re a scary side. They do things really well . . .

“The scoreboard hasn’t gone their way, but we look at them and the things that they’re doing, there’s a lot going right.

“There’s just a couple of pieces in their tool kit that aren’t working that well at the moment, but they could quite easily be fixed.

“We understand this is a really good side capable of playing some really good footy . . . We’d be thinking the Bulldogs at their best.”
