Balme "fits the criteria" for vacant coaching job: Lyon

By James Cusak
SEN
23 July 2019

SEN Breakfast co-host Garry Lyon has suggested Neil Blame as a left field candidate for the three vacant head coaching positions.

With the success of Chris Fagan at the Brisbane Lions, Lyon believes Balme would be the right fit if he was surrounded with the right people.

“He’s got the most magnificent manner about him, he’s coached his own team, he’s at the stage where he can develop a group without worrying too much about what happens beyond the next few years,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“Neil Balme fits the criteria.”

Balme, 67, currently the General Manager of Football at Richmond oversaw the Tigers 37-year premiership drought in his first year.

“Him (Balme) as the figure head coach with a younger group of assistants … would be magnificent in my opinion.”

“With the right group around him he could fit all of them (St Kilda, North Melbourne and Carlton).”

Balme previously coached Melbourne from 1993-1997 with 41 wins and 57 loss record.

Lyon went on to say he doesn’t believe Balme would want to be a senior coach, suggesting that it may be 10 years too late.

So he says all that then adds that he doesn't think Balme would want the job cause it is 10 years too late??

Then why bring it up in the first place??

Hope Lyon carries a box of tissues around because he dribbles from the mouth a lot.

Of course he wants Balme to leave Richmond ...knows how important he's been to our success.... :shh

...actually far more worried about how we'll cope post-Balme than post-Rance, Riewoldt & Cotchin... :shh :shh

They should be employing someone below Balme to takeover that role in time. Richardson ex Saints coach is someone we could look at.

Not the worst idea - Balmey would no doubt already be on first-name terms with him... :shh

via methane and of course excrement.  Why would Balme who is obviously a big picture strategist switch to a time sensitive, stressful, tactical job at his age?
