Naish on how far Tigers have come

Ex-Richmond player Chris Naish says he is proud of how far his club has come from his playing days to now ahead of their second AFL Grand Final in three years.

Naish, whose son Patrick is currently on the Tigers' roster and played in the VFL Grand Final win over Williamstown last weekend, said his son’s first two years at the club have been in complete contrast to his own time at Punt Road during the 1990s.

“I had an 11-year career and had seven different AFL coaches,” Naish said on SEN’s The Sporting Capital on Tuesday night.

“I had a different coach every 16-18 months. I was always meeting a new person, not to mention rattling tins at Swan Street and Bridge Road with the save our skins programs. So, the club is just so different to my involvement there."

Naish managed 143 games and 212 goals in a Tigers career spanning from 1990-97 and added that despite how important the result is this weekend, the 'healthy' spot the club finds itself in is of equal importance.

“Probably what is most proud to observe and sit in the stands as a former Tiger is just the club and how healthy it is,” Naish said.

“They’re developing young people. They’re well led by Brendon (Gale) and Peggy (O’Neill) but everyone you run into - the welfare team, the assistant coaches.

“I think they’ve got the mix right of professional sport and also making sure that young people are developing themselves.

“Winning it would be amazing and obviously everyone will be doing their absolute best to do that, but more importantly they’re developing a great culture within the club.

"The pleasing thing from a parents point of view is my son is part of a club that is developing people and footy is part of that.”

The Tigers will look to add a 12th premiership trophy to their cabinet when they face the GWS Giants at the MCG this Saturday afternoon.
