Players from the 00s - recap
« on: October 24, 2019, 12:16:46 AM »
Hey everybody,

So I figured in the off season this is the best time to ask this since it won’t detract from the H+A games. So I was wondering if fellow forum mates can help me with the advantage of clear objective hindsight give me some summary on our team in the 00s specifically the mid 00s.

I was born in 87 and as a teen I had an ok understanding of the game but obviously not to the level now. I used to watch a lot of games with dad but my dad was diagnosed with cancer in 02 and passed away in 05 so I kinda went off the rails and because it was something I did with dad I didn’t have it in me to religiously watch multiples games each round every round until 2010 really.

But enough of the sob story I would love your help to know if my memories of certain players are fair.

Kane Johnson: from memory he was a good accumulator but did nothing with the ball and threw other players under the bus with hospital hand passes. I though he was a crap player and captain compared to Campbell and Newman. Is this fair on sugar?

Joel Bowden: absolute jet who was getting pumped because our team was poo and inconsistent game plans. You couldn’t compare him to our back 6 now but I remember that left foot being deadly. Could t kick with his right if his life depended on it though

Tivendale: I remember him being decent like a solid foot soldier that played his role. Is this accurate?

Shane tuck: an absolute jet who would benefit from our current game plan of metres gained surge football but for some reason Hardwick didn’t like him

Some players which I have no real recollection of are Tom roach and Andrew Raines. They are sons of Richmond legends so I really wanted them to be good but obviously they fizzled. We’re they just not cut out for afl or was it a case of great raw talent wasted at Richmond (of old)

Thanks in advance for your comments. I was at mums house today and I found my old Richmond top and it just sent me down memory lane

I often wonder how a Tucky would go in the current side had he been 10 years younger...we could certainly do with his extraction abilities and his manic, see ball, get ball and just bang it forward (or at least up)approach would certainly suit our current gameplan and his ability to take marks, go forward & kick goals would be a bonus...he probably even could've played a similar role to Townsend in '17 but for his poor defending... and there's the rub...unless you're an out & out star (or a half-back flanker) in this side, lack of defensive accountability isn't tolerated at all..hell he even got dropped for it way back when standards weren't so high and although he eventually improved in that area, it was never a strength of his...so I guess he could just as easily heve ended up being shipped off to the Gold Coast with his poor man's mini-me Miles as he could've with two premiership medals around his neck (or maybe even three because we could've done with someone like him in last year's prelim) :shh

Axel Foleys magnet would have comfortably found its way onto the whiteboard had he played in this era, I think.

I’ll never forget him lighting it up in the 2008 origin game.

He deserved more, bloody legend. Hope he can enjoy the success and flags without too much envy and forlorn.

Still a tiger man, good mates with the likes of Moore, Kingy, Jacko, Schulter etc
I work in Africa and they were taking the pee out of me for saving Africa.......

His 2007 season was something else. I thought he was near on the best player going around that year

That I do remember. Didn’t he lead the comp in clearances in 07?

Much of this package is from '07 I think.

The clips of him ripping it out of the guts against St. Kilda. Yeash! Matthew Knights eat your heart out. I will never forget that game. We pushed the Saints right to the end. Even though we were trash and they were pushing for a flag. It was right in the midst of that epic losing (not winning) streak against them in the mid to late naughties.

I doubt anyone in the team today could replicate those efforts.

Prestia does a fair job of it, Cotchin at his best.... :shh

Anyway...surely we haven't already forgotten our most obvious example of a gun ruined by injury:

Haha thanks for the succinct summation. Oh I seemed to recall that polak was actually a good player but that bus collision accident basically ended his career? Am I looking back with rose coloured glasses with this or was he actually decent?

IIRC he looked quite promising at Freo early on and showed the odd glimpse here & there .. never really settled into a position at either end of the ground but tbh he was never really that good...can't remember what his contract staus was at the time but have the feeling he probably would've been delisted had he not had the accident and was only retained as a goodwill gesture...distinctly remember a few flogs on Big Footy "joking" at the time of the accident that he just was showing his usual lack of awareness.. :shh

My memory was he was a little better than that. Was coming into a strong vein of form at the end of 07 and start of 08.

The accident was pretty brutal. He more or less had to learn to walk and talk again. Eventually recovered but he couldn't ever get back to where he was.

I'd actually mark him down as another "coulda been" from that era. Was taken directly behind Hodge, Ball, Judd in the famous '01 draft. Looked to be finding his feet at the level when the accident occured. Ah well.
