Greatest ever pick 3: Judd or Dusty?
« on: November 23, 2019, 06:01:40 PM »
Shifter Sheehan says Judd ahead of Dusty.

No.3 - Chris Judd (West Coast, 2001/Carlton)

Judd changed the game with his breathtaking acceleration from the centre and was extremely difficult to defend when he first burst on to the scene for West Coast in 2002. Played 279 games, won two Brownlow medals, was six times an All Australian and won five club best and fairest awards and was a premiership captain.

But he certainly now has a challenger emerging with Dustin Martin already on 224 games, two premierships, two Norm Smith medals and a Brownlow as well as being a three-time All Australian putting him in the superstar category.

Dusty is more versatile and less injury prone but Judd has 6 all Australians. He just kept that level for longer so far. If dusty gets to 6 then I'd flip but I'm on Judd's side ATM.

Dusty extra flag and Norm Smith's count extra for me.Way more versatile then him his 50 plus goal kicker if he plays forward. At blues besides 1 or 2 seasons wasn't great injuries had a play to. Dusty more team player to.

The fact Dusty will be a one club player is also a key to me.

While I  appreciate why Judd came back to Melb. He chose the club that offered the most $$$ ( ;)). He also he came with the fanfare of "guaranteeing" he would deliver the Blues a flag. He didn't

Dusty has helped deliver 2.

If you lined both up and could only choose one then I would take Dusty every time.

However, based on their whole career to date, what favours Judd is he was at his peak for longer. Dusty has been at his peak for 3 years. So right now I can see why non-Tiger supporters would say Judd but by the end of Dusty's career (barring some serious injury - touchwood), it will be Dusty by the Flemington straight.

Judd can have the nod for now. But wait until Martin finishes his career with:

4 Premierships
3 Norm Smiths
2 Brownlows
7 time all australian
350+ AFL games
500+ goals
4 Jack Dyer

You know what's funny is if I had to choose between Judd Dusty or Cotchin I'd choose Cotch because he's the better leader of the 3. Stuff the stats, holding fractious personalities together is much more important.

I would rather party with Dustin.

Judd is a boring wanker and his wife is a waife of a thing.

Dustin is easily better. Judd was never the same once leaving West Coast, but media continued to fawn over him and was basically gifted his second Brownlow. In the end Judd was all hype and no substance, Dustin easily.

Both absolute champions

Judd was probably a better midfielder. Dusty more versatile.

This is a very hard one. He was surrounded by potatoes at Carlton and basically carried the team. I felt he deserved the second Brownlow. As already mentioned he was an absolute elite player over a very long time. That being said I don’t think his peak is as good as Dusty’s 2017.

My Richmond bias has me picking Dusty.

Judd's second Brownlow should've been Swan's but Swan's Brownlow the following year should've been Judd's. #squareup :shh

Anyway Martin by a mile ...will be part the GOAT converstion by the time he's finished.... Judd was just a upmarket version of Paul Kelly.... :shh :shh

Instead of comparing the two players strengths, I compare their weaknesses.
Judd was one one of the worst field kicks going around, he launched many wayward & loopy helicopters that were slow to arrive.  He covered it up by going sideways & backwards to open team mates which made him negative & lacking any penetration by foot.  His set shots at goal were just ordinary too.
Dusty has very few weaknesses, if he has any it can be his acceleration from standing to top speed - just average, his top speed is still good but is slower to get there (its why he gets caught HTB).
Interestingly the two are almost exact opposites of each other, but both are champions in their own right - Dusty is elite by foot & deadly around goals but not as quick out of the blocks as Judd.
Finally, Dusty still has 4-6 years left in the game to achieve even more while Judd is finished.  Over time I expect Dusty to blow Judd off the park when they get compared again.     :cheers
