Can't really rate it until we see them play and develop.

We got screwed with the Ellis compo but, you can't win a flag and expect to have 5 top 20 picks either.
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do

These are inspired picks, just take a good look at the skill set of these boys and just consider them doing those things on the big stage and you can't miss the potential upside to these kids.

If your going to rate the new crop because clubs didn't take them tied to there academy that's a silly assumptions we draft to our style and game plan.

I gave them 2/10.

Reason being they did nothing in trading pre draft. They also failed to get us an earlier pick in the draft. They just sat back and felt sorry for themselves regarding the compo pick.

In terms of the players drafted its an all or nothing job
Dow has good hands in close but what else? 3 players taken from acadamies where both Brisbane andcSt Kilda were not prepared to match even with rubbish picks as late as 59+.

I fear that if this draft doesnt go well we could end up with 0 players from this years trade and draft effort
Whilst we are ok in 2020 and 2021 if none of them come through we will be scrambling to maintain our position in 3 or 4 years time.

LOL, you numpty

I can see what you're saying and I agree to some extent re: academy players. Truth is there are some fans that think they should have matched and plenty that aren't bothered/are happy for the blokes.

Ultimately these are players that might suit our club better than their academy clubs. Good players don't always succeed at new clubs (guys like Carlisle, Stringer etc) and average players can improve or thrive in a new one depending on the club itself (our own examples are guys like Houli, Grigg etc).

In 3 or 4 years time youll probably be agreeing with me. Big chance some of these guys would have been delisted already. We'll see.

OK, here's some info from someone well connected in the game in QLD

"theres a lot of referencing Richmond as the benchmark. Some good intel on the lions academy boys we took. 1. They were the best two in their academy but both pure mids which brisbane have 14 of on their list. Tigers super smart and worked the vein. AfLq stoked that their development program enticed Richmond. I.e they want the academy's producing football talent for the game rather than  the club. Noah Cumberland had to be cajoled to stay in the game from u16 onward cause hes an apprentice stonemason doing 12 hour days then training and games and was completely stuffed for 3 years. Should thrive getting paid to train and not humping rocks all day.  Will Martyns 18th year was relatively underwhelming but 15, 16 and 17th year was exceptional"

Dont forget we also essentially ended up with the Aints 2nd rounder in 2020, win the flag & our 2nd rounder is 36, Aints could be as low as 19, most likely they will finish around 14th so our pick improves 12 or 13 spots

Just had a read of the lions forums on big footy. One of the mods there has said that the two boys we picked up would have been list cloggers and thats why Brisbane didnt match. In the end time will reveal all.
