Collingwood's All Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy has signed a seven-year, multi-million-dollar contract to stay with the Magpies.
But it also represents a significant investment for Collingwood at a time when a number of crunch contract decisions loom.
Key young players Jordan De Goey and Darcy Moore are both out of contract at the end of 2020, and will justifiably be looking for deals in the same realm as Grundy's. Collingwood has historically baulked at offering deals longer than five years, but the conversation will now have changed.
With Scott Pendlebury also out of contract at the end of the season, it means rival clubs will be closely monitoring the situations of De Goey and Moore.
De Geoy and Moore will likely demand deals upwards of $800,000 a year, which would put a tight squeeze on Collingwood's salary cap.
