If I was coaching this team the team rule would be long kicks only, limited hand balling.
Keep it very simple.

Same possession chippy chippy game plan Hardwick introduced when he arrived. We were being compared to Fitzroy at the same time.

Did we give away draft picks for Fredericks?
I didn’t think she was too bad last week.
You wouldn’t want to get between her and a hamburger

Richmond has been defeated by fellow newcomer Gold Coast by 11 points at Metricon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers took the lead midway through the first quarter before the Suns booted four answered goals to secure their first AFLW win, 5.3 (33) to 2.10 (22).

Richmond skipper Katie Brennan was a solid contributor for the visiting side with 14 touches and six tackles and had an intriguing battle with Sun Jamie Stanton, who impressed with 20 disposals.

The Tigers clawed back late and dominated territory in the last quarter, but struggled to kick straight in front of goals as Gold Coast kept them under pressure.

Tayla Stahl was a standout for the Tigers, kicking her first goal in the AFLW in her second game. Christina Bernardi worked hard and was a strong presence up forward.

Phoebe Monahan was once again a key pillar in Richmond's defence, topping the Tigers for disposals (21) for the second week straight and taking four marks.

Richmond debutant Grace Campbell showcased great toughness and speed around the midfield, adding a different dimension to the Tigers' onball brigade.

Say what?

"We attacked the game really well, we just couldn't capitalise in the forward 50." – Richmond coach Tom Hunter.

"It's an absolute dream to play with such hard workers." – Richmond forward Sabrina Frederick on teammates Tayla Stahl and Christina Bernadi.

What's next?

The Tigers play host to the red-hot Kangaroos at Ikon Park next Sunday at 3.10pm AEDT.

Sun sets on Richmond as Tigers remain winless in AFLW

Jon Pierik
The Age
16 February 2020

Richmond's much-hyped AFLW arrival has been dealt a harsh reality check - and there could be more pain to come - after the Tigers fell to an 11-point loss to the Gold Coast Suns.

Beaten by Carlton in their maiden clash last week, the Tigers had hoped to build momentum against a Suns unit which managed only one goal in round one. But playing before their home supporters at Metricon Stadium, the Suns had a night to savour, toasting their maiden victory.

The defeat will almost certainly leave the Tigers at the foot of the conference A table and, on the evidence so far, out of finals contention in what is an eight-game home-and-away season.

Coach Tom Hunter rued a lack of composure heading into forward 50, for poor ball use and decision making in the warm conditions made it a tough evening until three quarter-time, but in the final term the issue was wasted opportunities in front of goal, for they managed only five points.

The Tigers' pain could continue, for they now face an impressive North Melbourne at Ikon Park next Sunday.

The Suns had their opening major on the board within minutes when Jamie Stanton, one of their key off-season signings, ran on to a loose ball behind the pack and was able to dribble it through. It took until the final quarter for the Tigers to post their first major against the Blues but this time they had two on the board by quarter time. Christina Bernardi pounced on a loose ball, while Tayla Stahl - one of the great stories of the competition - marked and converted from 20 metres.

However, Kate Surman made the Tigers rue a 50m penalty on the siren and the Suns carried that momentum into the second term. They kicked away to hold an 11-point lead at the main break and were relieved when Stanton re-emerged after half-time, having appeared earlier to have seriously hurt her collarbone. She finished with 20 disposals.

Forward thinking

The Tigers appeared to have a more potent forward line, for Bernardi, Courtney Wakefield, Sabrina Frederick and, when not in the middle, Katie Brennan can all take a big mark. But they struggled to have an impact as a combination. Brennan worked hard, and tried to will her team back into the contest early in the third term, but the Suns benefited from dropping a loose player back. Hunter may need to think about having his players change their kicking angles more often rather than going long down the line. In defence, Phoebe Monahan was superb.

Boom time

Monique Conti would have spent Saturday preparing to play in the Melbourne Boomers' WNBL semi-final against Canberra on Sunday had she remained in that sport. Instead, the former point guard permanently switched to football late in the WNBL season. She was one of the better Tigers last week and again found plenty of the ball against the Suns, with 17 touches.

Lucky number

Tigers midfielder Grace Campbell, 24, made her AFLW debut and showed she was up to the challenge with 15 disposals. Hailing from Bendigo, she dons the No.43 with pride. She was handed that number on her initial talent ID day at the club, wore it on her VFLW guernsey, while it was also the street number of the first block of land she bought.

Best

Gold Coast: Surman, Stanton, Dunn, Ahrens, Hickey
Richmond: Bernardi, Monahan, Conti, Brennan

Suns best wasteful Tigers to clinch inaugural win

Eliza Reilly
Herald Sun
16 February 2020

A tantalising Gold Coast Suns have become the first 2020 AFLW expansion side to secure a win in year four of the league after defeating fellow newcomers Richmond by 11 points.

One week after taking it right up to fourth year side the GWS Giants, the Suns decisively beat the Tigers for three quarter before surviving a late scare to run out 33-22 winners.

Neither side could be split in a tightly contested first quarter as both expansion clubs visibly carried frustration from losses last week into the first 15 minutes.

Jamie Stanton struck first for the Suns in her 25th AFLW game after a punishing run inside forward 50.

Paige Parker marked on the edge of the square and had the vision to spot her teammate charging into space, kicking to grass which allowed Stanton to run onto the kick and dribble it through the goals.

Former Collingwood sharp shooter Christina Bernardi levelled the playing field shortly after, swooping on a loose ball that managed to clear both Suns defenders and roll towards the goal square.

Just six years after acting as a getaway driver in a bank robbery, Richmond livewire Tayla Stahl wrote the final chapter in footballs ultimate redemption story when she kicked the Tigers second and the first of here AFLW career.

Stahl very nearly had a second within five minutes of play but was denied a goal by a stray Suns hand on the goal line.

The Suns precision kicking game plan and structure behind the ball finally reaped reward in the dying stages of the first quarter when forward Kate Surman showed great intent to chase down her opponent and earn a holding the ball free kick.

Richmond failed to return the ball, earning Surman a 50 metre penalty which she squeezed through the sticks a stroke after the quarter time siren.

The conversion levelled the score at 14-14 as Surman hobbled to the bench and confirmed her gut running with a brief sideline spew.

In front of a 7,071 home crowd at Metricon Stadium, it was the Suns who shone early in the second.

Inaugural Suns AFLW goal scorer Britany Perry established her position as one of the league’s most dangerous forwards, perfectly reading an inbound kick from Kate Surman.

With outstretched arms, Perry marked the ball and turned her opponent to charge towards an open goal and kick the Suns third.

With a goal and a goal assist to her name, Surman’s work rate soon found herself at the end of a precision kick from defender Jade Pregelj inside the attacking arc.

From 40m out on a slight angle, she kicked truly to give her side a 12 point buffer.

In her milestone match, Jamie Stanton demonstrated the courage the league has come to expect of her late in the first half when she ran back with the flight of the ball, ribs exposed, and collided heavily with a Tiger.

Her courage was to no avail as the umpire had picked out a holding free kick moments earlier, gifting Stahl another shot at goal which she tugged late.

With the Suns leading 27-16 at the start of the third quarter, heavy legs saw the sting of the first half recede from the contest.

Both sides struggled to generate any deep inside 50’s until a second year midfielder Jacqui Yorston, sporting trademark long sleeves, pounced on a loose ball late in the quarter and floated the Suns fifth through.

Leading by 17 points, the Suns appeared to put the cue in the rack late as Richmond did all the attacking but without much reward.

Bernardi was nearly the most dangerous player on the ground, marking ball after ball but failing to convert.

A late run down tackle by Tiarna Ernst sealed the game as the siren sounded and crowned the Suns 33-22 winners.

Richmond skipper’s deliberate act sparks ‘spirit of the game’ debate

7News
17 February 2020

Richmond captain Katie Brennan has sparked a ‘spirit of the game’ debate after deliberately shoving the injured shoulder of Gold Coast star Jamie Stanton.

The Suns impressed against their expansion rivals to become the first of the AFLW’s new entrants to register a win this season, defeating Richmond by 11 points at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

Gold Coast lapped up the dry conditions to put their strong running game and precision kicking to good use, treating the 7071 strong home crowd to a 5.3 (33) to 2.10 (22) win.

Jamie Stanton’s 20 disposals and a goal led the way but she was forced to manage a shoulder injury sustained in a collision with Tigers forward Courtney Wakefield.

When the 24-year-old former Brisbane and North Melbourne player somehow returned, with the right shoulder strapped up, Brennan made her move.

The Tigers star bumped and hit Stanton’s injured joint, appearing to drop some chat amid their long-running battle.

But while injured Lions gun Charlie Cameron was protected by the umpire in last year’s AFL finals series, Brennan wasn’t pulled up by an official on the field.

“I don’t like it. I don’t like it in the men’s, I don’t know why everyone carried on last year when the umpires were warning players not to do it,” veteran journalist Caroline Wilson said on the ABC.

“I think there should have been a warning. Not a good look for the game ... it’s against the spirit of the game.”

AFLW commentator Kellie Underwood suggested the AFL match review officer should look into Brennan’s actions, while ABC caller Alister Nicholson played devil’s advocate.

“I don’t have a problem with the defender or the forward bumping one another, but when it’s deliberately targeting that area that they’ve clearly injured earlier in the game...,” he began.

“Well the opposite side of the coin is well they’ve proven themselves fit to come back out on the ground, you’re fair game.

“But I think that’s a poor look to deliberately target an injury.”

Not a fan of these 'spirit of the game' arguments.

If you're on the field then you're fit to play and free game for all as far as I'm concerned.

Be tough or sit on the bench. Shane Tuck played with a broken shoulder FFS. Graham with his shoulder too!

Robbo has stuck the boot into Kate Brennan.

I don’t watch much of the AFLW but I agree with his assessments of her performances. Just poor.

I think he should of mentioned more about how poor Sabrina is also

Brennan’s fall from AFLW poster girl to lost Tiger

Mark Robinson
Herald Sun
19 February 2020

What to do with a problem like Katie Brennan?

The one-time face of AFLW and still a poster girl for TV promotion, Brennan’s standing as one of the competition’s best players is under siege.

Arguably, she’s not in the competition’s best 30 players.

In fact, if you want to examine the acceleration in fitness, skill and athleticism in the women’s competition this season, Brennan is a symbolic case study.

Small sample, but 275 players have played in the two matches this season.

Brennan, the one-time Bulldog who is now the captain of Richmond, is ranked No.100. Her kicking efficiency is 37 per cent; the league average is 52 per cent.

Bluntly, her reputation does not match her performance.

Brennan captained the Bulldogs from 2017-19 before being enticed to the Tigers.

A commitment from the Tigers to play her in the midfield — one the Bulldogs coaches would not make — is said to be a major reason Brennan switched clubs.

In Richmond’s two losses, Brennan has played in the middle, albeit in a first-year team.

At the weekend, with the Tigers trailing a motivated Gold Coast by two goals at three-quarter time, Brennan managed just two disposals in the final quarter.

She is remembered from that match for swiping at the injured arm of opponent Jamie Stanton.

Stanton was crunched running back with the flight of the ball and left the field cradling her injured arm.

She returned after halftime, only to have Brennan target her injured shoulder.

Stanton’s courage to fly for the ball and her commitment to the team to return to the field was countered by a spiritless and pathetic show of “toughness” by Brennan.

Stanton is a 166cm inside midfielder and slight. Brennan is 174cm and has a powerful physique.

Brennan’s leadership, which has helped enable her to receive a high-end contract, was poor.

The more pressing issue is where to play Brennan.

A wannabe Erin Phillips, Brennan endured ankle injuries at the Bulldogs but at the same time believed she had the capacity, like the brilliant Phillips, to play as an explosive midfielder and impact forward. It’s not working.

A league best-and-fairest winner at Darebin in the VFLW as a midfielder, Brennan arrived for the first season of AFLW in 2017 as a crafty, classy powerhouse forward and one of the fittest players in the competition.

She could lead strongly, mark and kick a goal, and given space she was electric — and the AFL PR machine loved her.

Four seasons on, a swag of other players can lead, mark and kick goals.

And in the midfield, Brennan looks slow and sometimes lost compared to the new generation of quick, fit and skilled mids.

There are still “veteran” stars such as Daisy Pearce, Karen Paxman, Kate Lutkins, Jasmine Garner, Kara and Ebony Antonio, Emma Kearney, Ellie Blackburn, Jaimee Lambert and Kiara Bowers.

But the young ones are also showstoppers.

Like St Kilda’s Georgia Patrikios, Carlton’s Maddy Prespakis and Grace Egan, Collingwood’s Chloe Molloy, Fremantle’s Roxy Roux and Brisbane’s Sophie Conway, Lily Postlethwaite and Orla O’Dwyer. There’s Tyla Hanks at Melbourne, Jacqui Yorston and Serene Watson at the Gold Coast, Nina Morrison, Millie Brown and Olivia Purcell and half the powerful Fremantle team.

And let’s not forget Adelaide’s Ebony Marinoff, still 22.

Good judges say season 2017 is almost unrecognisable now compared to season 2020, and having watched nine and a half games of the 14 played this season, it’s not an absurd assessment.

Back in 2017, Brennan was a big fish in a small pond, and so was her new teammate Sabrina Frederick, formerly of the Lions.

Today the pond is a lake and the fish are plentiful.

Even Darcy Vescio, the livewire small forward at Carlton, is finding footy tough among this new generation.

Maybe Vescio needs to get out of attack and Brennan needs to get back there.
