A number of reports in the week leading up to the NFL Draft had suggested franchises would consider 'lesser' offers involving future picks on draft night, essentially trading better capital in this year's draft for more surety in the next.

Ultimately, NFL franchises largely held firm with 2020 picks across Friday, Saturday and Sunday's seven-round draft. However, would they have done so if there hadn't been a college football season precede it?

Thinking among clubs back home is perhaps not. It's why planning measures among AFL recruiters are already being drafted and tentatively thought about.

It has led to AFL clubs weighing up whether the risk of trading down into future drafts holds more value than staying put with better picks this year. That is due to clubs selecting prospects with less evidence of player improvement this season.

It has already reached the point where clubs are identifying rival teams who could potentially be looking to move between 2020 and 2021 drafts depending on their list positions.

One recruiter contacted by AFL.com.au mentioned teams in the premiership window potentially trying to profit from the situation by trading out of this year's draft for more capital next season.

Another noted that younger teams could also benefit, should they back in their recruiting staff in an otherwise uncertain draft year, by trading into this year's pool and getting more value.

The draft age is set to remain at 18, but opening the competition to 19-year-olds would allow clubs to draft out of two age groups.

The talent panel includes senior coaches Alastair Clarkson (Hawthorn), Chris Fagan (Brisbane) and Luke Beveridge (Western Bulldogs), Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann and the AFL's Andrew Dillon and Tristan Salter.

A fourth coach – Richmond's two-time premiership leader Damien Hardwick – also provided his views within a meeting last week having been sought out.

Mark Stevens on Ch 7 news tonight said 'lock in' a December draft.

He also said there may be 10 NAB League games this year and a mini-U18 Championship. So recruiters will at least get to see this year's U18 crop play a few games.

The mid-season draft is in danger of being scrapped after just one intake.

Clubs are yet to hear whether it will go ahead or not, but multiple high ranking club officials believe it is likely to be shelved in 2020 due to complications around Covid-19.

Shouldn't be any drafts for the next two years ... :shh

I think the draft should go ahead BUT

Teams should have the option of whether they are part of it

Currently they have to use at least 3 picks

Think that should  be abolished for the next couple of years

Yes that at the very least....would be pretty absurd if they don't...was a stupid enough rule under normal circumstances as it was... :shh

Hopefully grassroots footy gets going again and these kids are given a chance to show their talents + get drafted.

Clubs should be allowed to spread their 6 mandatory picks over the next 2 years. Maybe take 1-2 this year and 4-5 next year.

You cant delay the draft. The kids who are eligible should have a chance to be drafted. Maurie Jnr is on his way to Punt Road too.

Can easily delay it for a year or two...AFL's not going anywhere...publicity & media content is the main reason they have it anyway and is the main reason they won't delay it...still no reason to enforce mandatory minimum participation though.... :shh

Strategically from our point of view of our list we need to bring in another 4 or 5 players. A couple of big names to take up the salary cap room Rance has left. I also belueve Nankervis could move on if he doesnt play all the time which he wont. Coleman-Jones will hopefully get his chance.

A big key position defender and a prime midfielder should be on the agenda and then 3 quality kids Maurie Jnr and 2 others to add to our youngster stocks.

To that end Stack, Ross, Callum-Jones, Balta and Dow could all come through with development this year. Another 3 to that list and we're set to for a much longer stint at the top than our rivals hope.

THE AFL has settled on a six-round NAB League season after clubs were yesterday given further updates on the season.

The abbreviated male and female under-18 season will run from August to September, with the expectation a national championships tournament will take place in some form at the end of the AFL season.
