Greg Staffords future- Your opinions please
« on: April 23, 2006, 10:15:44 AM »
I might be mistaken, but ive had a  view that whilst the game has gone past him, he remains the SMARTEST player we have got. I dont know him personally, but his demeanor on the field, his footy smarts, aggression etc. I reckon he's at the very least- an assistant coach in waiting. Considering where hes at, the changing face of footy the fact that we havent got a ruck division with any depth...what should we do with him.  I gotta say, I think at the very least when he retires Id put him on the club payroll in an assistant coach capacity with some specialist coaching of the rucks...im wondering whether or not ive read him right or am i wrong in thinking that hes actually a pretty switched on footy brain.

I thought the game had passed him by, but his game last night was one of his most 'switched-on' games I can remember him playing for us.

At times, I've thought he has been a bit casual in his approach and can do one of those dinky short kicks to a teammate that so often seem to get easily spoiled by the opposition.

Last night though, he was anything but casual and a couple of his passes, with his quick movement of the footy resulted in at least one goal to Simmonds and I forget the other one right now, but he was creative in setting up opportunities for teammates.

And if he didn't get possession himself, he created a contest and the opportunity for a teammate to pounce on a spilled ball.  Minimal possessions, maximum result.  Great effort. :clapping

Couldn't agree more Ramps. Sadly we can't put his old head on a younger body.

That was great stuff when he marked the ball on the forward side of the near wing and had the quick awareness to know a teammate had run forward inside 50 and got off a quick chip that resulted in a goal :clapping. Was the other one TS to Hyde (?).

Just visited some other sites...looks like Mr Stafford is being discussed in depth today lol. If he plays say 11 games for the season...then he may be worth another 12 months contract...more for his ability to teach i reckon than anything else.

I still think this will be Staff's last year. It isn't his football ability that you question but whether his body can last a full season. While he's been at Punt Road he's only managed half years due to injury and suspension.

Had clean forgotten that one MT, which was early in the second quarter.

There were a few opportunities he created, especially in the second half, just through keeping the ball moving.  One was part way through the last quarter where he popped a handball in front of Foley who passed to P. Bowden for a goal.

Another was late in the same quarter where he popped a handball to Chris Newman, who punched the ball to the other side of the 50m arc.  The ball finally spilled out to Kane Johnson who goaled.

As a result of that goal, don’t be surprised if Rodes misses next week, due to a crook back and Johnson due to whiplash, courtesy of Cogs’ celebration. :rollin

Also probably depends on how some of the younger players progress through the season.  If we still need experienced back up going into next year then see how the rest of the season pans out for him and whether he wants to play on.

Can easily play the next couple of years, it's all about balance, if we get up and running that's the player u need resting up forward  :gotigers I knew we would win, Carlton a worry, have to come out firing  :thumbsup

Unfortunately it will be Staffs last year. His body wont allow him to go another year :(

Gee if you could get another year out of him you'd keep him.

1/ He is smart

2/ He's bloody skillful for a bloke 6ft 10"

3/ He's a leader - doesn't need a title is just a leader

4/ He intimidates the oppostion and they wont go near him so that helps our little and younger blokes

5/ frees up Richo to roam further up the ground and gives us another option up forward :clapping

6/ and most importantly  ourplayers seem to walk that little taller with him out on the ground

thought he was excellent last night :cheers

Agree RT but unfortunately I am sure I've read and heard Staffy isn't interested in coaching
