SEN saying Higgo is in?
3aw saying Houli and Higgo are in.

Soldo to be the sole genuine ruckman. Nank has been dropped.

Confirmed.

Richmond tyro Jack Higgins will play his first AFL match this season on Thursday night against Collingwood.

Richmond will take only one ruckman into the match against Collingwood with Ivan Soldo winning the selection battle over premiership teammate Toby Nankervis.

Last time we played Collingwood we had both Soldo and the athletic Chol. Grundy still had 36 hitouts but only 9 possies so he wasn't that extra 'midfielder' at stoppages he can be for the Pies at his best. The reason we went away from the Grigg-height 2nd ruck is because opposition sides realised they can just get their taller ruckman to thump the ball 20-30m into space to pre-positioned mids. The alternative is to use Lynch or Jack as 2nd ruck but as the old saying goes you don't use a ferrari to plough a field.

Ross Lyon and Matthew Lloyd did a length preview of our game on Footy Classified last night.

Both Collingwood and Richmond are fast starters, and Ross Lyon believes whichever side has the best first quarter, will claim the four points.

For Collingwood, it's all about stopping Richmond's run, and for the Tigers, they need to prevent the Magpies from scoring at stoppages.

Ross Lyon breaks it all down.

                                                  Rich    Coll
Score differential from turnovers    +27     +8
Score differential from stoppages   +12    +19

Collingwood relies on winning stoppages/clearances via Grundy. Inside F50, they kick 2-3 goals from stoppages.
Richmond don't rely on winning stoppages (16th in the league) as they set up well on the outside both offensively and defensively.

Collingwood is the highest possession team in the league. They like to slowly bring the ball forward by short chipping and marking until they get inside their forward half and then go long where their small/midsized forward crumb goals.

Richmond set up well defensively for slow play and then once they intercept in defence they switch and go. Richmond's half-forwards push up high and then they go quick to their isolated tall forwards with space behind them.

Lyon is tipping us to win while Lloyd tipped the Pies.

Every AFL club’s R2 burning question

June 11, 2020 12:53pm
Ben Waterworth
FOX SPORTS

Magpies’ burning question: Where can Collingwood expose Richmond the most?

It’s probably not an area where they can ‘expose’ Richmond per se, but the Pies can certainly have the edge in the midfield. The Pies have won two of their past three match-ups against the Tigers, with their high uncontested mark game catching the eye of most AFL pundits. But when you put the two on-ball brigades next to each other on paper, you could argue the Pies bat deeper and can get on top in the clearance battle. This seems especially the case when you add in the ruck factor of Brodie Grundy — a genuine star of the competition that should have the wood over Ivan Soldo.

Tigers’ burning question: How can the Tigers stop the Pies’ uncontested mark game?

The simple answer is something they do better than any team in the AFL: Apply relentless defensive pressure. In Collingwood’s two wins in the past three games between the sides, it’s out-marked Richmond by +49 (2018 preliminary final) and +96 (Round 2, 2019). Damien Hardwick’s Tigers readjusted in their most recent meeting, evening up the marks stat to win it by +6 in Round 19 last year. But it’s an area Hardwick will no doubt be wary of — and pressure is the best way to ensure the Pies aren’t allowed to control the tempo of the game.

Play our natural game and smart entry's in forward 50 hit our forwards not bomb it in to there advantage.Use our leg speed and Soldo work Grundy over last game he didn't enjoy Soldo working him over.

Collingwood v Richmond

Thursday, 7:40pm, MCG

It’s the strangest lead-up to a Round 2 game we’ve ever seen. Three months between matches is certainly not what we are used to.

Both sides are coming off solid Round 1 wins but it’s hard to work out what’s happening momentum-wise given the lengthy layoff.

Collingwood is without Adam Treloar (again) while Mason Cox didn’t quite get up, allowing Darcy Cameron to debut in the black and white.

Richmond has lost Josh Caddy to a calf injury while opting to drop ruckman Toby Nankervis. Bachar Houli is back after missing Round 1 and is joined by Jack Higgins for his first senior game in almost 12 months.

Over the last three seasons, the reigning premiers have a 4-2 record over the Pies but the black and white have won two of the past three meetings. Last time out the Tiges were roaring in the wet to win comfortably when the Pies were down on key personnel.

A very difficult game to assess but the Tigers get the nod simply due to their team structure being more reliable and a slight edge in overall quality.

Who wins and by how much? Richmond by 12 points.
