THURSDAY night's blockbuster AFL clash between Collingwood and Richmond was the most-watched free-to-air home and away game in a decade.

It was also the highest-rating Thursday night match ever.

Channel Seven's average national audience was 1.275 million, including 1.02 million in metropolitan areas and 273,000 regionally, while Fox Footy's broadcast attracted 342,000 viewers.

KB going troppo on the basis of one game. May he should wait for all 9 games to be played this weekend or until our game against West Coast in three weeks to see two teams back in full fitness and especially in full match fitness (even allowing for shorter quarters) and see if it is a 36 all draw.

Richmond and Collingwood have the two best defences in the league

Jeremy Howe has noticeably made drastic improvements to his game over the off-season, with two stunning performances to open his 2020 campaign.

The Pies’ back six stood up big time in the second half, holding on for their lives during Richmond’s swarming onslaught, which many teams have failed to do in the past. The collective unit of Brayden Maynard, Darcy Moore, Howe and Jack Crisp were immense last night.

Moore’s shut-down role on Jack Riewoldt was nothing short of incredible, with the young Pies defender proving his worth ahead of the free-agency period. If any players on the Collingwood list could walk off with their heads up after last night, is was certainly those five.

Richmond’s defence has been among the game’s elite for the last three seasons, and last night proved no different. All Australian Dylan Grimes was fantastic at fullback, with goal-saving spoils all night long.

Nick Vlastuin and David Astbury controlled the airways, with 11 intercept marks between them. Nathan Broad continued in his regular fashion, with another under-the-radar shut-down of the Collinwood small forwards.

The collective unit deprived the Magpies of any opportunity in the second half, with the Magpies’ last goal coming at the seventh minute mark of the second quarter.

The battle of the defences was definitely fun to watch, and was a potential sign of things to come on the last Saturday of the season.

I actually really enjoyed the game.

I went into the game fully expecting the Pies to win - not because they're better, I just thought they'd be more up for it.
 
Collingwood were so impressive in round 1.

After Thursday night there's no doubt in my mind that we are still King.

The shorter quarters enable teams to play a basketball game style which Collingwood used to good effect.

If there is a turnover in your forward line flood back and zone the defensive half of the ground.

Collingwood parked the bus in the second half. They just flooded our forward 50 to try and hang on and stop all scoring.

I think our supporters should start a campaign on the radio stations for longer quarters.

Shorter quarters were just brought in to help Geelongs aging stars get through more of a game. Just like 666 was for Geelong.

On talkback our supporters should be asking for 20 minutes + time on.

It will change back to longer 20 min + time on quarters next year but they won't change it back this year for consistency reasons given we've already had two rounds with 16 min quarters.

Geelong are more advantaged from playing all their home games at the narrow Kardinia Park. Inflates their ladder position and percentage. Mind you they eventually get exposed on the 'G in finals.

A draw, hey? It’s a bizarre feeling if your team is part of one. But Richmond fans would be frustrated their team only walked away with two points on Thursday night, because they had control of their clash against Collingwood for two-and-a-half quarters. They pushed hard late in the game but couldn’t find a way past the impenetrable Magpies defence and force too many scores.

In the votes

Big game from captain Trent Cotchin, who inspired his side back into the contest during the third term. He finished with 23 disposals, 15 contested possessions, seven clearances and six inside 50s. Bachar Houli (26 disposals, 9 intercepts) was crucial off half-back - though some of his decision-making in the first half, spotlighted on Fox Footy, was less than ideal - while Tom Lynch booted three goals in the second term to help give the Tigers the scoreboard kick they needed. Shai Bolton’s game in the front-half also shouldn’t be undersold, booting one goal from 11 disposals, six tackles and six inside 50s.

Room for improvement

So many players were well down on their usual outputs, with Jason Castagna, Marlion Pickett, Jack Riewoldt, Dan Rioli and Sydney Stack not hitting the scoreboard or winning 12 touches or more. Shane Edwards was also well down on his usual output, racking up only 13 disposals. Yet, still, despite the multitude of quiet performers, Richmond still managed an ugly draw against a genuine flag fancy.

Agree that is the plan and agree the AFL won't change as it is their plan to meet any future interruptions.

However thinking about this some more there should be no issue going back to the fully time quarters now and if there was to be further interruptions then drop back to the shorten quarters.

To me the issue of inconsistency and who you play under either system is offset as the AFL season is already inconsistent with 22 rounds meaning the better teams play under a handicap and also there is the weather and if you play in rain or sunshine or under the roof at Docklands.
