Wallace fears Kouta onslaught
27 April 2006
Herald Sun
Rebecca Williams

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace fears an on-field onslaught from Anthony Koutoufides after the Carlton champion's future was questioned this week.

Wallace said he expected Garry Lyon's article in Tuesday's Herald Sun questioning the Carlton skipper's longevity to provide ammunition for tomorrow night's clash at the MCG.

"You talk about Koutoufides, you have only got to look in the paper at Garry Lyon's article, he is going to come out steamed up," Wallace said yesterday.

"He was best on the ground against us in that game that they won (in Round 18 at Telstra Dome) last year.

"So we won't underestimate them by any stretch of the imagination."

But Wallace hoped the crowd would help negate the Blues, issuing a call to arms for the Tiger faithful for the team's return to the MCG.

The Tigers will use the occasion to blood another young cub with 193cm forward Cleve Hughes to make his senior debut.

It will be an eye-opening debut for the 19-year-old South Australian, the Tigers' second-round selection in last year's national draft at No. 24, who has never been to the MCG.

Wallace said the match was crucial for both sides, sitting on one win apiece, to keep their seasons on track.

"Carlton and Richmond have loved to hate each other over a long period of time so we are really hoping that we get massive support," Wallace said yesterday.

"I know our guys have been really looking forward to getting back on the MCG and we are now looking forward to Tigers fans being out in force on Friday.

"It's a big game in relation to where the two sides are, who's going to step up and march on."

Kouta, Stevens and Scotland had a day out last time. We put no pressure on them at all and we got smashed  out of the centre  :scream. Carlton might be crap but they won't be pushovers. They've been competitive in every game so far this year.

Nothing but positives at Punt Road (Herald-Sun)

Nothing but positives at Punt Road
28 April 2006   Herald Sun
Michael Horan

RICHMOND must capitalise on its interstate win against the Brisbane Lions by backing up with victory over Carlton at the MCG tonight, according to captain Kane Johnson.

The Tigers sparkled in a short, sharp workout at Punt Rd yesterday and while Johnson dislocated a finger in a handball drill, he soon returned to the fray after the injury was taped.

Johnson said that following Richmond's 115-point thrashing by the Western Bulldogs in Round 1, the players had made a concerted effort to turn around their fortunes.

"The boys have been on the improve in the past four weeks," he said.

"Our first round was very disappointing, but the attitude of the boys to get back on track has been sensational.

"It's been starting on the track and hopefully it will continue with a really positive performance against Carlton.

"It's just important we win, otherwise it'll make Brisbane nearly void. It's important we get the job done and then we can look forward to the rest of the season."

Johnson's game has changed this season, with coach Terry Wallace wanting him to tag some of the Tigers' big-name opponents.

"I've gone back to where I started, doing run-with roles on the best players, so hopefully that can continue and I can shut them down a little bit," he said.

If that holds true tonight, Johnson is a hot candidate to stand Carlton midfielder Nick Stevens.

Richmond returns to the MCG for the first time since Round 16 last year.

"It's very exciting. We've had a walk on the surface, it's a bit flatter than it used to be, but it looks like a good, fast track. I think the boys will enjoy it," Johnson said.

There was no sign of struggling star Nathan Brown yesterday, but Johnson said it wouldn't be too long before the gifted left-footer returned.

"Basically, he just needs a couple of weeks to get back on track, get rid of a bit of inflammation that might be around the bone or whatever it is," he said.

"I'm sure he'll be back in a few weeks and playing for us for the rest of the year."

Agree Moi. An absolute shocker by both sides and no excuses whatsoever  :banghead. Still night on probably the best surface the 'G has ever had. How can so called pros who train most days a week dish up crap like that?!  ??? Thank gawd we won although we did our best to lose it  :banghead. 14 shots in the second quarter for 5.9  :scream. Sheesh we should have been 5 goals up at half time and 10 at 3/4 time. Then we go and kick 1.5 in the last. Any decent opposition would have pumped us by 115 points again  :P.

I'll leave Richo for the other thread - B.O.G. Rainesy was great again. Pettifer, Lids, Hyde, Tivs and Hartigan were good also.

Staff went from choccies to boiled lollies within a week. Rodan back to Coburg with Krak not far behind. Just no intensity in his efforts at contests and Walker kept running off him. If Hughes gets the chop this week ahead of these then the selectors need their head read. I hope Jacko has a blinder on Sunday for Coburg as he didn't deserve to be replace by guys who don't put in at the level required.

Interesting to read in an article this week where when asked 'what are you doing' one team member said He was hanging around at another players flat with other team members.

Now if they were golfers playing at the level they do they would be out on the practice fairway practicing their weaknessess

The best way to learn to kick straight is to play Kick to Kick something that is not done much these days
and it does not need too many to participate in the exercise. all you need is a football and somewhere to legally kick it.

But then a golfer does not have the guaranteed income that an AFL player does with a contract agreement so why worry :shh

They do do some short running kick to kick at training but I agree Mopsy there's not enough emphasis on kicking straight especially at goal. Goalkicking is always left to the end of training even though it's a vital skill. The whole point of the game is to kick goals. We missed 8 shots from within the "vee" (45 degree angle or less) compared to Carlton's one. Nearly all their misses came from out wide shots. Pathetic on our behalf to miss that many gimmees :banghead.
