Jack vs Richo - who has been our best forward?
« on: April 26, 2020, 01:04:44 PM »
Ben Sutton on the AFL website says it's Jack in this century.

If fan-favourite Matthew Richardson played his entire career this century then this would be a lot closer. But Richardson's best years were 1996 (91 goals) and 2008 when he played predominantly on the wing. Riewoldt (634) probably won't catch 'Richo's' 800 goals, but he still gets the nod and is building a super impressive list of achievements: Three Coleman Medals, three All Australian blazers and two best and fairests to go with his two premierships.

They're so different though.

Richo probably a better forward and athlete.

Jack probably a better overall/complete player.

Carey has Richo just ahead of Jack.

Carey's Top 10 forwards in the 21st century:

1. Lance Franklin
2. Nick Riewoldt
3. Jonathan Brown
4. Matthew Pavlich
5. Warren Tredrea

6. Matthew Richardson
Given he played so much good footy in the ’90s, ‘Richo’ was right on the cusp in terms of eligibility, but I simply couldn’t leave him out. He’s been the best contested mark I’ve seen in this timeframe. Since stats were taken, he’s taken more contested marks than anyone (506) at a better average than anyone (2.77 a game). His athleticism was incredible and while there were knocks on his kicking, Richo still managed 800 goals across his career despite working up the ground and finishing on a wing. The fact he reached that mark in what was generally a pretty average Richmond team also speak volumes to his talent.

7. Jack Riewoldt
Jack gets his ranking because of his evolution from a Coleman Medal winning full-forward to the well-rounded team man he’s become. The fact he got my next selection shifted to a wing later in his career says something about the talent the Tigers knew they had on their hands when they drafted him out of Tasmania.

8. Matthew Lloyd
9. Tom Hawkins
10. Brendan Fevola

On pure talent Richo by a mile....he was Buddy before Buddy but better overhead and in the air....though his absolute best footy was actually as a winger...:shh

On just about every other criteria required to be a successful forward at AFL level and a great of the game - Jack by several miles....:shh :shh

My heart says Richo because he still had to try and kick us winning scores with no Martin and Cotchin feeding him and not to mention it was easier to chop the arms and scrag a forward in the 90d and 00s.

He was also the heart of the team and carried the frustrations we had as the tiger army

Jack by a mile. Absolute mile.

Richie will always be my favourite player. Adored him..worshipped him. But Jack is a way better player.

Richo at his best was unstoppable but also has some of the most worst performances that did our heads in. Jack has been consistently good and stepped up when it mattered more than many.
Go Tigers!

Different players, different forwards. Richardson would have kicked well over 1k in a better side. He was stuffing lethal. Honestly believe he could have been considered the greatest of all time nearly in the right set up

Love jack but richo was out of this world. Best contested mark I’ve ever seen and was a running machine.

I stand by my first comment.

Richo a better forward and athlete.

Jack a smarter footballer, better team player and leader. More complete.

No doubt though that Richo would kick 1000+ in our teams of the last 8 years.
