Richmond can't win the 2020 flag: Cornes (SEN)
« on: July 06, 2020, 03:49:26 PM »
AUDIO: https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=690354

Kane Cornes believes there are now only six teams that can win the premiership following Round 5 of the season.

Despite their win over Melbourne, Cornes has omitted Richmond from the list after they lost Dion Prestia, Trent Cotchin and Toby Nankervis to seemingly serious injuries late in the game.

See Cornes’ six teams from SEN’s Whateley below in no particular order: Dogs, Pies, Port, Brisbane, Eagles & Giants.

Cornes' excuses:

- Too many injuries.
- Some Tigers staying at home with family.
- Playing games away in a hub.
- Not playing in front of crowds.
- Not playing at the MCG.

Cornes clearly doesn't know our record over the past 15 years in SE Queensland is 12-2. We haven't lost at Metricon since 2014 (3 straight wins) and the Gabba since 2004 (9 straight wins).

Gabba record:

Metricon record: https://afltables.com/afl/teams/richmond/allgames_vn.html#32

Win or lose this year, this could be the making of another Tiger run in 2 years.  We know that we have the talent waiting in the wings but they have been starved of opportunity.  Look at Balta, Aarts & Chol on the weekend, they were fantastic.  Give them a run of games and watch them grow.

Looking at who may come in I say give the same 4 an opportunity for the 4-5 weeks or while in the hub.

Out: Nank (Soldo) ,Edwards (Bolton), Houli (Naish), Prestia (Ross).  Stack for Cotch this week.

Play Stack up forward, Bolton on the wing, if Lynch doesn't play this week it's time to unleash CCJ.  Keep the 2 rucks.

I am not including Pickett until he shows a bit more hunger. I have jumped off.

I think the real headline is “Why Kane Cornes can’t be a relevant media personality in the AFL”.
Mods should avoid his opinion pieces because they are only there as click bait which we are falling for
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Cornes named a handful of reasons why the challenges for Damien Hardwick’s side could now be overwhelming.

“You couple that with significant injuries. This Prestia injury is going to be significant. How significant for their best player last year remains to be seen,” he added.

“Same with Nankervis and they’ve got some issues in the ruck regardless. Cotchin has done another hamstring, this is a pattern now for the captain.

“Players out of form, a couple of players not able to join the hub and we understand why. Not playing in front of crowds and away from the MCG.

“It just feels to me like the challenges are just building and they are now insurmountable for Richmond where I don’t think they can win the premiership this year.

“I can’t see them competing with the hungry teams. When it comes to the business end and you have to sacrifice everything you need to… And that’s not a criticism by any means. I understand that it’s tough to stay up for four years in a row. I just think there are going to be some teams go past them this year.

“It’s a massive challenge but maybe there’s that school of thought that, ‘Hang on, we’ll show you. We’ve done it before and we’ve still got some quality in there’. But for me, it’s more of a gut-feel just watching them that there’s not the hunger and there’s been warning signs from an effort level, a form level and the challenges that they’ve faced.

“They appear to be the team that’s been most affected by the uncertainty of this year.”
