It’s a big round 11 for…

By Ashley Browne
SEN
7 August 2020

Less than 20 hours after round 10 finishes, round 11 begins. Ash Browne looks at who will be under the microscope.

Of all the great stories that are told in the aftermath of a premiership win, the tale Richmond people like to refer back to after last year’s triumph was the seven-point win over Port Adelaide on the road in round four.

It was supposedly the unwinnable game. No Trent Cotchin. No Jack Riewoldt. No Dustin Martin. Alex Rance was gone for the season and the Tigers were still trying to rejig their backline.

It was also their second straight game on the road. In the before-times of 2019, that was still a thing.

Yet the Tigers were magnificent that night, prevailing in an arm wrestle against the Power. Boom recruit Tom Lynch kicked six goals to help steer them home, and the four premiership points gained proved to be invaluable for Richmond, which finished the home and away season in fourth place. Without them, they would have needed to have win four finals on the trot to win the flag.

They were good in 2019, no question about it. But that good?

Which brings us to the opening game of round 11. In a normal season, this would be the start of the run home to the finals. It still seems a bit early for that, but there is no mistaking the importance of this game.

It has been hard to find too much fault with Port this year and every time the Power brings the effort, which as coach Ken Hinkley likes to say, they win the game.

But the path to the premiership runs through Richmond. The Tigers have won five of their last six games and their systems and structures just break teams down. Brisbane did a few things right last week against them, but still lost by 41 points.

This will be a great game and perhaps the first this year that generally shapes as a Grand Final preview. The self-belief and all-round excellence that Port has demonstrated all year will be severely tested against the side that knows it has the measure of every other team in the competition.

Richmond knows it can take below-strength teams on the road and beat anyone. Then again, how weakened are the Tigers these days? Shai Bolton, Jake Aarts and Noah Balta aren’t making the Tigers forget the likes of Dion Prestia, Shane Edwards and David Astbury, but they know they can win without them.

It is the competition for spots if anything, that has driven the Tigers through this frantic period of the season. It is a coach’s dream when the so-called ‘depth players’ are driving the improvement of the team.

There is no surprise that tickets for this game sold out as soon as they became available. It will be one of the defining games of the season.

Hardwick said the clash with flying Port Adelaide, who were too strong for the Western Bulldogs on Monday, loomed as an "enormous challenge".

"They've been terrific. The way they play the game under Ken (Hinkley), they're very explosive and like to use their speed," he said.

"From our point of view they're very, very dangerous. We have to be at our best to deny the way they play and take away a couple of their strengths."

Hardwick said Richmond will likely send Noah Balta to Port’s Coleman Medal contender Charlie Dixon on Saturday.
Dixon has a 6cm height advantage on Balta and weighs 5kg more than his likely opponent.

But the Tigers are prepared to go with the 20-year-old - who has been likened by Hardwick to retired star Alex Rance - in the absence of injured dual premiership backman David Astbury.

"We’ll probably look at a young Noah Balta to have that opportunity on him first and foremost, and see how he goes,” Hardwick said.

“It’s an enormous opportunity for Noah and one we’re prepared to back him in with.”

Dixon has kicked 17 goals from eight matches this season to sit firmly in Coleman Medal contention and has clunked more contested marks than any other player in the competition.

The 29-year-old veteran’s average of 3.4 contested marks a game puts him well clear of his nearest rival, Fremantle’s Matt Taberner, who averages 2.3.

“(Dixon) is incredible,” Hardwick said.

“His contested marking is very good and it has been for a long time. I think his consistency at this level has by far exceeded his seasons gone past.

“He’s so dynamic as well and he’s very good at ground level.”

Balta has played 18 AFL games since making his debut in round one last year and has impressed since replacing Astbury in round five this season.

Hinkley welcomed the challenge Richmond presented for his top-ranked side.

"It's pretty big – they're the champs," he said.

"Let's be honest, they're the team everyone's trying to beat. Nothing short of our absolute best will get the job done and I think we're ready to have a crack at it.

"We're going to challenge them with our game as best we possibly can. We need to find out (where we're at) against the best team in the competition over the past three years."

Damien Barrett tipping Port.

Port Adelaide

IF … you're familiar with the phrase "moment of truth" ...

THEN … for Port Adelaide, it arrives on Saturday night in the form of the again rampant, two-flags-from-the-past-three-seasons, Richmond. I'm backing the Power in. Reckon there's something special unfolding for Kenny this year.

Richmond

IF … the club itself has awoken from its little slumber (five wins from the past six matches) ...

THEN … the big man up forward, Tom Lynch, exploded back to life on Tuesday in the big victory against Brisbane. Dangerous signs for the rest of the comp.

This will be a key match up and one i am also looking forward to. Dixon will be very aggressive and will try to impose himself over Noah but i am confident Noah will at least match him on the day.
Vlas will be important intercept player today.

Really hope the umpires don't ruin things, these days they seem to want to penalise every physical marking contest. Unless its obvious just call play on and let the game flow rather than calling these 50/50 decisions that invariably  seem to be paid against us.

Rest assured, we are going to be absolutely fisted today by our mates in white.

Port in SA always get a good run and they are currently the league's underdog hopefuls.

Tigers clearly hated by all. Crap about racially motivated sexual assault, as if this is some sort of rape strategy. More crap about wanting their groceries paid for in the hub.

Target on our backs. Need to make sure the scoreboard reflects how strong we are!

Amazing goal but pretty soft defence, no pressure
