Classed as the Big 3 at that time with Dyer as captain/coach.

Successful during the first half of their tenures. 1943 flag and twice runners-up (42,44). Last finals appearance was 1947. We didn't play finals again though until the Hafey era 20 years later.

To this day, our B&F still includes Dyer (the name of the medal itself of course) and Fleming (3rd place).

Balmey's tribute to Dimma:

“Coaching’s very much about week by week, what your players do, and how you work with your players. He’s still very engaged and very much in charge of what he’s doing, but he also empowers his assistant coaches so well . . .

“And he doesn’t have a lot of blame.

“A lot of old coaches, if it didn’t work well, they’d give you a big payout and hope you’d respond to it. If that has to happen, well, he’ll do it, but it’s very rare that happens.

“It’s always encouragement, what can we do better. Let’s learn from our mistakes and get better from them, rather than shaming you or whatever.

What an effort from Hardwick. Has taken us from an absolute rabble to one of the best teams of the modern era.
After 2016 I thought it was a matter of time till he got the sack. I certainly thought we had no chance of winning a premiership under him.
Growing up barracking for the tiges was tough. Im talking 90's-2000's.
After winning the flag in 2017 I was content. We could've got the spoon in '18 and I wouldnt have cared. But to continue being dominant was great knowing it wasnt just luck and a fluke.
I do however feel like after this year its going to start getting really tough. Jack, Cotch, Dusty are all getting older.
We have some great young players coming up and are in a better position IMO than Hawthorn after their dynasty, but you cant take this current group of players for granted. Jack, Cotch, Dusty, Grimes, Shed, Vlastuin, all great players and drafted by richmond. We made them the players they are today.
I would just say savour this finals series Win lose or draw because its been a strange old year and we have done brilliantly to get this far. Lets get 2/3.

What an absolute champion bloke Hardwick is.
He is cemented himself as an AFL great coach.

The way he got us out of the poo at half like he did in last years preliminary final was just masterful.

The way he has coached and led this club will go down as legendary.
He has won us back to back premierships

Just an amazing bloke and an a legendary coach.

The club did an amazing job appointing him.

As a result of this sustained period of triumph, Damien Hardwick deserves to be spoken of in the same sentence as Alastair Clarkson.

Consider Hardwick’s last 20 years in football for a moment.

In 2000 he played in Essendon’s all-conquering premiership team that went through the season losing just one match.

From 2001-2004 he was part of Port Adelaide sides that won three of a possible four minor premierships and one big premiership.

Then in 2008, he was Clarkson’s right-hand man at Hawthorn as the club shocked Geelong on the biggest stage.

His 2010-2016 period at Richmond saw him produce no finals victories. Not one. He almost lost his job.

But since then, he’s overseen three more premierships in four seasons. So as a coach, senior assistant or player, he’s been involved in six flags in 20 years. He’s been around the mark in several others.
