Chol in for somebody sounds like the only change Hardwick is even considering...and he probably won't even do that....so our on-ballers are going to have to do a lot of sharking at stoppages next week...speaking of which,  I suspect the players most disappointed by Soldo's absence are Port's on-ballers given the silver service he provided them with all day last time...SPP in particular... :shh

Believe Caddy should come in but at whose expense is the critical question.

The problem is Caddy body is not reliable this year for me.I like him up forward  gives us class up there and takes a good player , but who to drop.In saying that was happy with our forward line last week with Bolton up there.

Torch, please educate me, we take out a running half back in Broad and put in a forward semi winger In Caddy, how would that work?

Pickett drops out.
Caddy can play wing. He proved this in spades last finals series
He also adds more spice to our already hard edged reputation.

Players also with spice ie. Robinson were able to get into the heads of those less experienced to manage those emotions (Pickett) and we were found wanting without someone who could not only show some presence with some hard edged play but also provide the lip required to assist those less blessed with the required composure (thickius epidermis) to not only take it on the chin but give more back with some confident vitriol.
Caddy provides all of this. I would plonk him on a wing and let him flex not only the proverbial muscle but imposing himself on the contest including kicking the odd clutch goal something we saw in every final he played in last season (on a wing).
The club that keeps giving.

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Simple we currently have 8 defenders in our 22 so we are already surplus in that area.

Both teams appear more likely than unlikely to keep unchanged teams for the preliminary final.

TIGERS’ PREDICTED 22

B: David Astbury, Dylan Grimes, Noah Balta

HB: Liam Baker, Nick Vlastuin, Bachar Houli

C: Kamdyn McIntosh, Jack Graham, Marlion Pickett

HF: Shai Bolton, Jason Castagna, Dustin Martin

F: Tom Lynch, Jack Riewoldt, Daniel Rioli

FOLL: Toby Nankervis, Shane Edwards, Trent Cotchin

I/C: Dion Prestia, Jayden Short, Kane Lambert, Nathan Broad

The Tigers are likely to toy with the selection of Josh Caddy or Mabior Chol, to add another big target inside 50 and help in the ruck battle. At times, key defender David Astbury was thrown into the role against the Saints, with Nathan Broad also pinch-hitting. However, it does seem Hardwick has settled on a group of players he wants to take to the Grand Final.

POWER’S PREDICTED 22

B: Ryan Burton, Trent McKenzie, Dan Houston

HB: Hamish Hartlett, Tom Jonas, Darcy Byrne-Jones

C: Xavier Duursma, Ollie Wines, Karl Amon

HF: Zak Butters, Todd Marshall, Brad Ebert

F: Connor Rozee, Charlie Dixon, Robbie Gray

FOLL: Scott Lycett, Tom Rockliff, Travis Boak

I/C: Sam Powell-Pepper, Steven Motlop, Tom Clurey, Peter Ladhams

Port Adelaide has declared Xavier Duursma and Todd Marshall fit after the pair copped heavy knocks in the final against Geelong. If the Power make a change it is likely to be forced, with Marshall not doing contact training on Monday due to his shoulder niggle. Justin Westhoff or Mitch Georgiades would be the obvious replacement if he doesn’t get the final all clear.

Ruck dilemma for Tigers

By Peter Ryan
The Age
October 14, 2020 — 11.44am

Richmond may select Mabior Chol to help Toby Nankervis combat Port Adelaide's ruck duo Scott Lycett and Peter Ladhams in Friday's preliminary final at Adelaide Oval.

With Ivan Soldo out injured and Callum Coleman-Jones sent home in disgrace after breaching AFL protocols on the Gold Coast the Tigers are considering recalling Chol who was dropped to make way for Tom Lynch in the qualifying final.

The Tigers regretted not using him as the second ruckman in their loss to the Lions but were able to get by using defender David Astbury in the back-up role against St Kilda after the Saints lost ruckman Paddy Ryder to a hamstring injury.

However, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said they were "less likely than more likely" to use Astbury as second ruck against Port Adelaide with the coach suggesting centre clearances would be a crucial factor in determining the result.

"A lot of [the game] is going to be off the back of centre bounce," Hardwick said.

"We know the significance of centre bounce at Adelaide Oval. It's a relatively easy ground to defend so territorial battles are going to be important."

Hardwick said Chol was developing well and he had great faith in his ability. Encouraged by his second half against the Lions after a below-par performance in the first half, Hardwick said he was confident Chol could perform as required with the Tigers thinking Nankervis would be more dynamic if given less game time.

"We will continue to invest in him ... he can do some things that other players can't," Hardwick said.

The Tigers marked out the Adelaide Oval dimensions to train at the Gold Coast on Wednesday as they look to win at a venue they have won at just three times in eight appearances since 2017.

Although they lost to Port Adelaide there in a hard-fought round 11 match they will be bolstered by the presence of Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards, Dion Prestia, Bachar Houli, Jack Graham and David Astbury who did not play in that match.

“We do like the look a second ruck,” Hardwick said before his team’s main training session of the week at the oval adjacent to Metricon Stadium.

“It provides us with some back-up and allows ‘Nank’ (Toby Nankervis) to play less game time where he is more dynamic. So that is what we will weigh up.”

But Hardwick’s biggest hint came when he was quizzed on David Astbury’s responsibilities. The consistent defender played a minor but important pinch-hitting role in the ruck against the Saints, but a repeat is “probably less likely than more likely at this stage,” according to the two-time premiership coach.

“They are both 200cm, the Port Adelaide boys,” Hardwick continued.

“We were pretty happy with how Dave went about it. We are obviously going to lose the hit-outs in those situations. Around the ground we probably feel we get some benefit. Those situations and scenarios will be weighed up in match committee this afternoon.”

RICHMOND

B: Dylan Grimes, David Astbury, Noah Balta
HB: Bachar Houli, Nick Vlastuin, Jayden Short
C: Kamdyn McIntosh, Jack Graham, Marlion Pickett
HF: Shai Bolton, Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin
F: Jason Castagna, Jack Riewoldt, Daniel Rioli
Foll: Toby Nankervis, Trent Cotchin, Shane Edwards
I/C: Liam Baker, Dion Prestia, Kane Lambert, Nathan Broad

Emerg: Josh Caddy, Mabior Chol, Oleg Markov, Jake Aarts

No change

UNAVAILABLE: Ivan Soldo (knee), Sydney Stack (suspension), Callum Coleman-Jones (suspension)

NOTES: The side was a lot better balanced against St Kilda after the inclusions of Lynch and Broad, with the latter allowing Astbury and Balta to chop-out in the ruck when required. Without genuine seconds footy, it's difficult to see any players outside of the 22 forcing their way into a semi-final-winning side. A proven finals performer in Caddy waits in the wings if injury strikes a midfielder or forward.
