Is it possible that in 2021 we will be in a better position that we started 2020.

I know Jack and Cotch are another year older but both still have some more to give, but we found a few this year that will make us even better with this year under their belts

Bolton
Balta
Baker
Short

Even Ross I think will be a long term player for the club.
And I am hopeful that Stack and CCJ come back hungry to make up for a stupid decision.

Add that to home games at the G in front of the Tiger army and I think we are better placed than 2020.

Spots in the 22 are going to be hard to keep.

Where is Claw?
Not much call for my style of posting and critiques of the club. In anyones language most things are being done well but theres always room for improvement i suppose.

Biggest concern for me is most of our high quality is placed in the vets bracket. Players enter the vet bracket at age 29 at start of the season for me

Our 9 vets have played 1707 games at an average of 189.6 games and i dont think we have them covered in any of the other brackets  that is mature players 25-28 development players 22-24 or juniors aged 21 and under.

Would dearly love for us to go hard in coming drafts for the next Martin and cotchin. to compound this problem Lambert and  Edwards both vets and Prestia is 28 arent spring chickens.

Imo we need to be proactive in finding the next JR. We just dont have a high quality junior KPF on the books.

Both Astbury and Grimes are now vets and Rance will officially be off the list.  There is only currently Balta coming thru and hes played just 30 games, so targeting another high quality junior kpd would be high on my list as well.

I count 13 juniors and between them they have played just 76 games for an average of 5.8 games between them,  this is exacerbated if you take out Balta 30 games and Stack 26games it leaves just 20 games between 11 players there is going to be an aful lot of development needed to get them close to what is needed as far as experience goes.

Imo target quality draft picks if at all possible or target high quality needs thru trades. I reckon the age demographic of the list says this is now where we are at.In saying that you have to ask is there one more flag left in the vets and mature types.

I think we're going to hit the cliff when Cotch, houli, Edwards and Jack retire. We won't be able to replace them. I thought some of them would have been this year but they all seem to want one more shot. IMHO jack looks very close to cooked.

Only Edwards has mileage left.

The other 3 are about one soft tissue injury away from the end haha.

Jack is a star and has at least 2 good years left in him IMO.
He is the smartest player on our list and probably the league (footy brain) so he can do what he needs to do and keep being able to contribute.
I think a normal preseason will do him good, and so will when games go back to normal length.

Cotch I think is the same although I think Cotch’s mind will give up before his body will.

Edwards still moves like he is 22 and keeps getting better.

Finish Houli off now and give his spot and place in the team to a kid.
We must keep evolving

The post underneath that showing footage of dusty pumping up and giving instructions to the fwd group after his 2nd quarter goal is beautiful to see. May never be in the leadership group due to wanting to stay away from media but he is no doubt a leader within this playing group.

We currently have 18 players excluding Higgins who is likely gone, who are aged 23 and under for next yr. Just 6 of those players have played more than 20 games they are.

 Baker 23yo  42gms, Rioli 23yo  95gms, Balta 21yo 30gms, Bolton 22yo 47gms, Graham 23yo 55gms and Stack 20yo  26gms.

If im honest imo of those 6 only Balta projects fwd as a potential A grade player and as far as im concerned he has taken over from Alex Rance.

Who is going to replace the Martins Cotchins Astbury,s  Grimes, Riewoldts Edwards they are all vets and even if they have two or 3 yrs left in them should we not have some real quality kids in the system preparing to take on the roles when they do go.

The high quality profile as far age go's is most definately and mostly with those who are in the vet category. Even the quality players who are not vets lynch and prestia are both 28 at the start of next season what we do nothing and just wait for the vets to go past their use by date and fall of a cliff.

The most obvious need is to have Riewoldts understudy in the system now not in two yrs time when he is gone if he lasts that long.

Im not having a go at players here but this thread asks what are the needs going fwd in a list management sense. Its a fact our age profile says nearly all the high quality players are in the vet category or close to it we ignore it at our peril.

Can anyone tell me who is the genuine young kpf being groomed to take Jacks place in the not too distant future.Where is the next Dusty or Cotchin on the list.

Where are the midfield dynamo's who are going to replace 30 plus yr olds Martin, Cotchin, Edwards and even Prestia for that matter.Bolton may be could be the clever replacement for Edwards.

The 6 23 and unders who have got more than 20 games behind them where do people rate them

Baker - a solid  contributor with limitations due to size.
Rioli -remains a polarising player with many complaining about his game and rightly so imo
Balta- is one people seem very happy with and looks like he will become a high quality key defender.
Bolton- looks a classy player but he needs bigger players around him
Graham - is a very solid inside player
Stack - well the jury is out after the honeymoon period.

Its one thing to blandly say they got coaches votes this yr but ask the question are they good enough to take over from those who are going to be retireing over the coming yrs? or do we need to acknowledge that in all probability we need to target high quality players in certain areas.weather that be in the draft or trade F/A etc.

Balta aside none of the others look like being game changers or of the quality that is in the vet group.Lastly 12 of the 18 23 and unders have played just 37 games at an average of what 3 games.

Its a list analysis and going fwd id say the age profile of where the real quality is says we are very close to the point where we need to be looking at replacing those high quality players with high quality players.

Anyway enough from me,  it seems a bit of old fashioned common sense gets peoples backs up who cant get over old grudges and need to troll and act like 10 yr olds.I will be back and i will continue to put an opposing view on what people think.

Definately last thing. I ask the question are we still in a window to win another g/f?  i hope so but im not sure about it. win while we have the cattle and the cattle is capable of still doing it im concerned that the cattle is another yr older and it seems there is little coming in to help us evolve.
The flip side is we could well be at the same stage Hawthorn were at after their 2015 win. Without continued evolution and some quality coming in i think that is the more likely scenario in 2021.For me its time to start targeting high quality young players to take over from the vets.

I get your point about needing to get the young talent come through to eventually replace our older stars but that’s a very simplistic way of looking at it.

Firstly how do you get games into the younger talent when all of our older players are still performing at a high level and the team is at the top winning premierships? The top teams don’t play youth for the sake of it, that is something the bottom clubs do as they have nothing to play for. Other than Rioli who was in our team from round 1 of 2017 all of the other under 23 players have broken into the side and other than stack are now premiership players. This shows that the coaching group aren’t afraid to pick the younger players if they train hard and perform well when called upon. Also jack Ross has come in and showed a bit and while CCJ let himself down off the field this year I still see huge upside in him.

Secondly replacing these players is much more easier said than done. These aren’t just any ‘top players’, these are some of the greatest players in the clubs history and I dare say some will never be replaced.
