2021 rule changes (afl site)
« on: November 18, 2020, 06:59:10 PM »
The Commission has accepted the following game adjustments ahead of the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season:

1. A maximum of 75 total player interchanges per match
Rotations will decrease from 90 per match in 2020 to 75 per match in 2021. Each team will continue to be permitted four interchange players.

2. Player Standing The Mark
The defending Player will only be permitted minimal lateral movement on The Mark. If the defending player moves off The Mark in any direction prior to "Play On" being called, a 50-metre penalty will apply. The defensive team is unable to substitute the Player on The Mark.

3.Location of The Mark at Kick Ins
The Mark shall be set at 15 metres from the centre of the Kick-Off Line towards the centre of the ground at Kick Ins. This was previously set at 10 metres.

The scoring trend has been falling as they've been reducing bench rotations in recent years yet Hocking thinks lowering rotations even further will somehow now increase scoring :huh3.

Making players more tired will also only make the skill level and decision making even poorer.

I wonder if the man on the mark rule will mean you don't man the mark but patrol the left and the right with two players either side which allows them to move and they fall back after the kick in or close of the kicker runs it.
The demand to be stationary and further back may just make the player non effective. Not that they are effective much now.

What do they mean unable to substitute the player on the mark?

What do theyean unable to substitute the player onntheark?

If your man marks it you have to stand there. Can't run on (like a tall defender) and drop back while a small forward takes your mark.

Oh so rule 2 is to standing the mark in play not just kick outs. My previous assumed it was a kick out from a point..

Isn't there a 4th change to 3 players inside your offensive 50m zone at kick Ind and throw ins. That's what Twitter is saying

There is a simple way to fix scoring. Pay the real free kicks to key forwards. The 3 on 1 blocking, arm chopping and blatant holds are ridiculous.. The 2020 Coleman medallist Hawkins had to cheat via pushing in the back to get his goals. It's no wonder players like Brown and Tex struggled. I blame the very poor adjudication of the game for the low scoring rather then the actual rules. As for Richmond well we barely got a free kick this year...

Extend the kick-to-mark minimum to 20 metres...get rid of ruck nominations and ball up straight away...no last touch rule but crack down even harder on deliberate OOB , get rid of prior opp, i/c 15 per quarter.... 25 metre penalties for minor and accidental violations, 50s only for serious and deliberate ones...do all that then declare a 50-year moratorium on further rule changes and disband the rules committee...  :shh

I wonder what team that Hocking once played for that these new rules will help the most?

These rule changes are going to be a nightmare for the umps who are already struggling with the other rule changes Hocking has forced upon the game :facepalm.

The only positive is, as Dio pointed out, our blokes like Kane Lambert are going to love a more endurance based game.
