Last few years we have dealt with injuries during the home and away season to put ourselves in a position to compete for the flag. Injuries might have gotten the better of us this year but look at the young core group of players coming up!

PLAYER   INJURY   ESTIMATED RETURN

 David Astbury    Achilles    Test
 Mabior Chol    Finger    Test
 Bigoa Nyuon    Knee    Test
 Nick Vlastuin    Corked quad    Test
 Tom Lynch    Knee    1-2 weeks

Updated: Tuesday, June 29

Early prognosis
Richmond's injury list has doubled in one weekend. Balta and Broad left hospital on Tuesday after having surgery on their respective syndesmosis injuries and are looking likely to miss at least two months. Astbury, Lynch and Nyuon are more likely to be available this week than Vlastuin and Chol, while Nankervis will be reassessed next week with an eye of bringing him back in round 17.

Injury Report: Round 17, 2021

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge with an update on Toby Nankervis, Bachar Houli, Callum Coleman-Jones, Shane Edwards, Dion Prestia and Kane Lambert in the latest injury report.

Bachar Houli, ankle, (medium-term)

“it was (with) four and a half minutes to go in the game, he had an incident on the far wing where he hurt his ankle. (He) came down from a spoil/a contest, and it was not great to look at on the vision.

"Initially post game the assessment was that he had hurt his ankle, but scans the next day showed he had done a bit of damage to the syndesmosis in the ankle.

“It was decided that he should have some surgery to support the tibia and the fibula which support the ankle… same as ‘Broady’ and Noah Balta the week before.

“Probably if there is a slight positive, (it is that) Bachar’s is not quite as bad. He was able to walk around the next day and feel reasonably comfortable, but the surgery will still help to support that ankle joint.

“We expect his return will be a couple of weeks at best, but again we will have a better idea probably in a week or two as to what that exact timeframe might look like.”

Nick Vlastuin, knee, questionable

“Nick had an incident early in the game where he had a knock to his knee, he was quite sore during the game, and he played it out.

“We have had some scans in the following days, and he has got a little bit of medial ligament damage in his knee which will not necessarily rule him out of the game this week.

“It is on the mild-end of the spectrum, (so) it is straight-line running tomorrow, and then assess him to main train later on in the week to look at his availability for Sunday based on that session.”

Shane Edwards, ankle, questionable

“Shane Edwards had an incident early in the game where he slipped and jammed the back of his ankle. He required a bit of medical treatment early in the first quarter and we had to re-tape his ankle.

“He finished off the game… (but) he is still pretty sore from that incident, and he has also still got the medial ligament issue on that same ankle, that he recovered from a few weeks ago.

‘We are going to assess Shane during the week and make the call later in the week as to whether he plays or not.”

Callum Coleman-Jones, calf, (short-term)

“'CJ' was reporting late in the second quarter, just a little bit of soreness with his calf. At half-time we just took the approach to remove him from the game and activate the sub.

"So, ‘CJ’ will most likely miss this weekend, but we expect that he will be in a position next week to return to play.”

Toby Nankervis, knee, probable

“Toby has had a good last week. He will train fully tomorrow and again Friday. He will have to get through all the usual ruck scenarios that he would do in a game before we give him the final tick off, but it is looking fairly positive at this stage.

“We will make a call later in the week.”

Dion Prestia, hamstring, (short-term)

“Dion is running again and running at a reasonable pace. Dion won’t be available this week but depending on when our game is next week, we will have a look at training and make a judgment.

“He is progressing well, (he has) obviously had a pretty rough trot this year. We are hoping to get him in a position to return to play and keep him on the park for the rest of the year.”

Kane Lambert, hip/calf, (short-term)

“He will start running again tomorrow. This calf injury is a little bit related to a hip issue he has been managing.

“He will miss this week and then we will make an assessment next week as to how he is progressing for a return to training and hopefully selection.”

 Toby Nankervis    Knee    Test
 Nick Vlastuin    Knee    Test

 Noah Balta    Syndesmosis    Indefinite
 Nathan Broad    Syndesmosis    Indefinite
 Ivan Soldo    Knee    Indefinite

Updated: Tuesday, July 6

Early prognosis
Nankervis looms as a huge inclusion for the Tigers' match against Collingwood and Brodie Grundy, just needing to get through training this week. Vlastuin has minor MCL damage after a knock to his knee, but is still a chance to play, as is Edwards. Injury-prone pair Prestia and Lambert are set to resume running this week, while Houli's syndesmosis injury requires surgery, but isn't as severe those of Balta and Broad. - Sarah Black

Not sure I'd play Balta and Broad again this year. Don't risk them.

Soldo aim 2022 also.

Retire Houli.

The rest just take it easy. Support the kids out there, don't bust a gut.

Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge's injury update:

Dustin Martin -  see Dusty's thread.

Kamdyn McIntosh, hamstring, (medium-term)

“Kamdyn had a small incident out on the far wing where he just went to accelerate and felt some awareness in his hamstring. He has never had a hamstring injury before, and further scans have shown it is fairly minor.

“He will definitely miss this week and potentially the week after, but we anticipate it is not going to be anything long-term.

“He is already back running, which is a really good sign with these sorts of injuries, so we would anticipate he is only going to miss one or two weeks potentially.”

David Astbury, ankle, probable

“Dave had an incident late in the game… he came from the field, and we strapped him back up and got him back out there.

“He is walking around fine at the moment… we will take care of him at training tomorrow, and he will resume training with the group on Friday preparing for Sunday’s game.

“I expect him to be available to play.”

Shane Edwards, ankle, probable

“Shane has had a good week. He had an ankle issue which has dragged on and was still causing him a little bit of grief last week, so we just played it really safe.

“He was training yesterday and looking really bouncy with his running, agility and change of direction. He will resume training tomorrow and I anticipate will be available to play this week.”

Callum Coleman-Jones, calf, probable

“(He) had a calf issue from the Gold Coast game (in Round 16) and has been running over the last couple of sessions. He will resume training tomorrow and again Friday and we will assess his availability for the weekend.”

Dion Prestia, hamstring, (short term)

“Dion is back running at full pace and will resume some football training this week. With Dion, we are looking to make sure when he returns that he stays playing football.

“We are going to take two weeks of training and then we will assess next week if he returns to play.”

Nick Vlastuin, knee/quad cork, (short term)

“He is carrying two issues at the moment, he had a medial ligament knee injury from the Gold Coast game, but he also had a significant corky from that game on top of the corky that he had the week before (St Kilda), so that has actually become more of the issue over the last week or so.

“He has had a bit of a re-bleed from that second incident… it was a little bit confusing with the knee and the corky, but it has now become evident that that cork was a lot more serious.

“We have had to actually take a step back and be really careful with him. He has not quite got full range back in that leg.

“He has just started running again yesterday, and it will be a slower progression given now he has missed two and a half weeks of football training.  We are managing him into a program this week and will make an assessment next week as to what that looks like.”

Nathan Broad, ankle, (short term)
and Noah Balta, ankle, (medium term)

“Broady and Noah Balta sustained their ankle injuries in the St Kilda game, and both had surgery for an ankle syndesmosis issue. Both of them are back doing some light running.

“Broady is actually a little bit further progressed. He is running at about 50 percent speed at the moment, so he will progress this week outside (into) straight line running.

“Noah has just started on a treadmill, so he is a little bit behind (Broad), but hopefully will progress more at the back end. His injury was a little bit more serious.”

Bachar Houli, ankle, (medium term)

“Bachar, who was a week later in the Gold Coast game, has just started walking around pain free. He will start some AlterG treadmill running some stage this week.”
