Following in the footsteps of his brother, Tom, Josh Green looms as the top talent coming out of the GWS Giants Academy in 2020. While he cuts a similar figure to his elder sibling, the Canberran is a genuine utility at 192cm, able to play roles in key position posts at either end and even run through midfield. Green turned out for the Giants Academy four times last year, while also representing the NSW/ACT Under 17 Futures side against Vic Country. As a top-ager, he improved his standing with two excellent performances for the Giants in the Academy Series, arguably claiming best afield honours for his side in both outings. Having played in the 2019 Under 17 Futures All-Star showcase, Green also earned a National Combine invite to cap off his year.

Versatility is one of the top traits a draft prospect can have and as a genuine utility, Green ticks that box. He is a strong figure at 192cm/87kg, allowing him to adapt to the rigours of key position play and take on opponents who may measure up taller than him. Green’s aerial ability is largely made up of his marking prowess, with a decent vertical leap (71cm running at preseason testing), judgement of the ball in flight, and clean hands combining to make up that part of his game.
At centre half-back, Green uses those traits to cut across and intercept, while up forward he more often marks on the lead or in contested situations. His sometimes overlooked running capacity also aids such a style, with high-level endurance (21.6 yo-yo test score in preseason) and decent speed off the mark (3.075 seconds 20m sprint) allowing him to attend multiple contests. As much was evident in his first Academy Series outing, where he dominated the second half with a series of strong marks in soggy conditions.
That same running ability is something which has Green pegged as a potential big-bodied midfielder, somewhat in the mould of his older brother. His clean hands and overall mobility shape as terrific attributes which can transfer to midfield play, though Green’s craft in that position is something he can still improve on. Looking at his NAB League numbers from 2019, they are quite indicative of a key position player with averages of 10 disposals and 3.3 marks, but Green is the type of tall who can find a good amount of ball between the arcs.
Should he continue to really give the midfield a crack in future, Green can work on becoming a touch more agile and explosive from the contest. His speed does not rate too badly in testing, though he can take a little time to get going and break free from congestion. He is a mobile type across the ground, but in a similar vein, Green can improve his ground level work to cleanly extract and move the ball on at stoppages. But with a good amount of strings to his bow and a promising base to work off, Green could be a player to show a steep rate of development should he reach the elite level.

DRAFT PROJECTION: Late-Rookie
Green may have attracted some interest from AFL clubs outside of the Giants with his performances this year, especially in the Academy Series against the best of his NSW/ACT peers. He looms as a much more prospective talent when compared to his brother Tom, so could prove more of a value pick later in the draft for GWS. At season’s end, the Giants held four picks past 40, meaning they could cover any bid for Green in the National Draft, select him late, or allow him to slide into the Rookie Draft. Either way, the most straightforward conclusion is that he will remain in GWS colours come 2021, should he be granted an AFL opportunity.

Verdict: It was somewhat of a breakout performance for Couroupis, and his lift in output could be a timely one for the struggling Bloods midfield. Having also turned out for the Henley Sports Academy during the week, the Year 12 student should have his hands full with plenty more opportunities to impress. Midfielders with points of difference are always important, and Couroupis’ ability to mark overhead was good to see. It should put him in good stead for a more consistent output.

He took six marks (four contested) including a brilliant pack grab in the opening term. Couroupis regularly provided an option for the Bloods coming out of defence and was strong at stoppages against a talented Panthers midfield. He finished with 25 disposals, five clearances, three tackles and a 55-metre goal from a set shot.

    A small-medium defender who has come on leaps and bounds this year, Mansell allayed late injury concerns to help Woodville-West Torrens take out the premiership flag. The Tasmanian native was a key rebounder out of the back half and showed good skills with ball in hand, while also bringing a hard edge to the side. It could be his year after being overlooked twice.



" The sole Tasmanian to receive a State Draft Combine invitation, Mansell is the cousin of highly touted fellow North Launceston teenager, Tarryn Thomas. Mansell’s attack on the ball is as good as anyone’s and he is a fierce tackler, averaging four per game at the National Under 18 Championships. He is a composed user of the football and has terrific acceleration off the mark (2.96 seconds in the 20m sprint) that helps him both offensively and defensively. He could continue to develop his endurance further, registering 20.5 on the Yo-yo test at the State Draft Combine, and also find more of the football, but overall he looms as a draft smokey and has good upside."

IMO Eggy is been given another chance to train because he is a free hit. I'm presuming he'd go back onto our Cat B rookie list even if he got chosen leaving our two free Cat A rookie spots for the other blokes to vie for.

West Adelaide midfielder Nic Couroupis is a hard-nosed, inside midfielder, renowned for his strong defensive work-rate, explosiveness from the contest and good aerial ability. He played reserve-grade football with West Adelaide in season 2020.


Rhyan Mansell, a speedy, skilful, tough, rebounding defender, played in three consecutive senior premierships with Tasmanian club Launceston, as a 17, 18 and 19-year-old, before joining SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens this year. He had 19 disposals and took eight marks in the Eagles’ 2020 grand final victory over North Adelaide.


Joshua Green, the younger brother of rising Greater Western Sydney star midfielder Tom, and grandson of four-time Richmond premiership great, Michael Green, also was a member of the Giants academy, but was overlooked by them in the recent AFL drafts. He is a strongly-built (192cm, 87kg) player, who can be used in a variety of on-field roles, including key positions.


AFL clubs can utilise the Supplementary Selection Period, which runs from January 6 to March 9, to select a previously delisted player or overlooked draft hopeful to fill available spots on their rookie list.

 If clubs decide not to sign players during this period, they have the option of using a pick (or picks) in the 2021 mid-season draft.

10 players putting their hands up to fill vacant list spots at AFL clubs during Supplementary Selection Period

The AFL’s next recruitment window is about to open, and these snubbed draft prospects and axed players will hope to catch the attention of clubs.

The recruitment window is set to re-open on Wednesday as the Supplementary Selection Period begins.

Overlooked draft prospects and delisted AFL players will be hoping for another opportunity as 11 clubs – Adelaide, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond, St Kilda, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs – weigh up how to fill vacant list spots.

Clubs can sign players between January 6 and March 9 or keep positions available for the June 2 mid-season rookie draft.

With no second-tier football in Victoria last year, shortened seasons in other states and smaller list sizes, there should be plenty of talent available.

Here are 10 players who will be putting their hands up over the next few months:

1. Kaine Baldwin

Many observers believed the pack-crashing Glenelg forward would have been a top-10 selection if not for consecutive anterior cruciate ligament injuries. The 18-year-old has moved to the Gold Coast for study and will play for the Suns’ under-19 academy squad in the NAB League. Although he is not due to return to the field until April or May, Baldwin will be tough to overlook if he shows he is over his knee issues.

2. Zavier Maher

Considered one of the unluckiest players of the draft, Maher is training with Carlton but will be on the radar of other clubs. Like all Victorian prospects, the inside midfielder missed the 2020 campaign due to coronavirus, but in 2019 he shone at Caulfield Grammar, where he won the best and fairest, showcasing his speed and power, and also played six games for Murray Bushrangers.

3. Henry Walsh

Walsh is another victim of clubs’ push towards recruiting mature-age ruckmen, rather than drafting 18-year-old big men. The brother of Carlton star Sam Walsh was expected to again lead Geelong Falcons’ ruck last year before COVID struck. Clubs that are keen on him may want to get in first because if he starts the new campaign well, they may have to join a queue.

4. Jackson Callow

The 193cm swingman is mobile and takes a strong mark but is awaiting an opportunity. Callow has more than held his own the past two years playing against men for North Launceston in the Tasmanian State League. He kicked nine goals and was named in the best three times last season and booted three in the grand final to help his side prevail in 2019.

5. Oliver Davis

Another Tasmanian, Davis is a midfield bull who has impressed for Clarence in the Tasmanian State League. He was the winner of Tasmanian Devils’ best and fairest in the NAB League in 2019 despite being a bottom-ager.

6. Liam Kolar

Was tipped to be a draft bolter and was linked to the Crows with their fourth pick (No. 28) but instead was overlooked completely. At 195cm, Kolar is a soccer convert and junior national athletics carnival winner who is known for his versatility.

7. Sam Collins

The Tasmanian mid-sized defender known for his intercept marking was snubbed in last month’s drafts. Standing 188cm, he has been likened to Geelong’s Tom Stewart and boasts clean hands and neat disposal. Could suit a swag of clubs.

8. Oscar McDonald

Probably the favourite to fill the vacant list spot at Carlton, where he is training alongside Maher and Callum Moore. A Demons backline regular from 2016-18, playing all three finals in that latter season, McDonald, 24, managed just seven appearances last campaign and was axed. He would provide experienced cover for Jacob Weitering and Liam Jones.

9. Derek Eggmolesse-Smith

Up there with the most surprising delistings after playing six games last year, but he is in the running to get a second chance at Richmond. The 22-year-old showed his wares at half-back in Bachar Houli’s absence and received two Brownlow Medal votes for a 23-disposal performance against North Melbourne in Round 7. Has too much upside to not be on a list this coming season.

10. Flynn Appleby

Looks like the 21-year-old mid-sized defender is in a two-horse race for North Melbourne’s sole available list spot, as one of the club’s train-on players, along with ex-Brisbane swingman Sam Skinner. Appleby played 11 games for the Magpies, including one last year, and would add depth to a North Melbourne side needing it.

FORMER Brisbane first-round pick Cedric Cox will be one of three prospects to push for a list opening at West Coast from next week.

Cox, 23, was delisted by the Lions last year after being taken at pick No.24 in the 2016 NAB AFL Draft and has signed on to play with the Eagles' WAFL outfit.

The 181cm utility, who can play at either ends, played the last of his 13 games for the Lions in 2019.

He will be joined by 20-year-old Subiaco forward Nic Martin (192cm) and 19-year-old Swan Districts defender Will Collins (191cm) in training with the club's senior squad.

The Eagles currently don't have a list spot open after using their full complement in December's Rookie Draft. However, they could opt to move retained rookie Daniel Venables, who is on the comeback trail from concussion, to the long-term injury list which would open up a spot.

Elsewhere, Melbourne has three spots available in this Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) after defender Marty Hore ruptured his ACL at training last week.

The Demons currently have Kobe Farmer, the son of former Melbourne high-flyer Jeff, training in hope of winning a berth on the list.

Essendon has two spots available having passed on a pick in the Rookie Draft as well as Irving Mosquito recovering from an ACL and have three players training at Tullamarine.

The Western Bulldogs have opened up another position following the retirement of Sam Lloyd in December, with Toby McLean's (ACL) long-term injury already opening one slot.

Hawthorn (James Sicily) will also be able to do the same, while North Melbourne, who left one spot open following the Rookie Draft, announced on Thursday key forward Charlie Comben would be out indefinitely with a leg fracture.

Train-on players can be added over the next two months and take part in pre-season fixtures, giving clubs until March 9 to decide whether they want to take up the option with the player.

Any positions not filled can be utilised in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

Former Adelaide speedster Jordan Gallucci is training with Richmond

FORMER first-round pick Jordan Gallucci is being considered for a list opening at Richmond, earning an invite to train at Punt Road.

Gallucci joined the Tigers on Monday morning, one of five hopefuls pushing for two vacant spots left available after the Rookie Draft.

The 22-year-old midfielder/forward, who has signed for Williamstown this year, was delisted by the Crows in November after playing the last of his 27 AFL games in 2019.
