Rhyan Mansell [merged]
« on: February 18, 2021, 02:23:07 PM »
Time to start a thread about Mansell now he is officially a Tiger  :clapping.

Mansell, who hails from Tasmania, is no stranger to premiership glory, having won a SANFL flag with Woodville West Torrens last year, while also winning three senior flags with Launceston.

He has been on the club's radar for several years despite focusing mainly on cricket as a junior.

Mansell, who represented the Allies at 2018 AFL national Under 18 championships, was a key member of the Woodville-West Torrens side that claimed the 2020 SANFL league premiership, averaging 14.1 disposals, 5.7 intercepts and 78 Champion Data ranking points. He saved one of his best games for the grand final, racking up 19 touches, eight marks and five tackles.

Mansell put himself on the draft radar with his burst of pace and skills off half-back, as well as his toughness.

Richmond recruiting manager Matt Clarke said Mansell, who also won three senior flags with Launceston in the TSL, had been on the club’s radar for several years.

“We have always liked his stuff because he suited what we like in a player; super competitive, physical, (and with) really good speed,” he explained.

“He has Richmond qualities and that ability to come in hard and tackle.

“He played footy, but he was in the cricket pathways. He also played soccer mainly as a kid, so he was not in all the (football) squads like a lot of kids are.

“To go into Woodville-West Torrens last year under an excellent coach (Jade Sheedy) and into a great footy club and brilliantly run organisation was fantastic.

“When he went there from Tasmania, it gave us confidence he could do well, and he obviously fitted into a really good team and won a flag, which was a big tick.”

“We watched all his vision and the live streaming last year, but it is just not the same as actually being there,” Clarke said.

“So, to be able to get him over here to train was great and a chance for us to also see how he could fit into our system and how quickly he would be able to learn, which he has.

“We have been able to have a bit of a look at how he might adapt to the way we play and defend, and he has coped really well.”

Rhyan Mansell
20-years-old
180cm
72kg

Standout attributes:
Pace, defensive impact plays

Rhyan was a standard setter for hardness and defensive actions in the back half for the Eagles. Smothers, 50/50s, hard tackles and spoils. Made his presence felt and can make the big play.

He doesn't read the flight as well as some others but makes up for it in closing speed.

His greatest weakness currently is his inconsistent disposal which is quite a drawback considering he is capable of finding the ball consistently.

He should be in the frame for clubs looking for a hard shutdown defender.

Not surprising that we picked up that kind of player considering we lost markov, delisted eggy and bach  is looking like he only has 1 more season in him.

Looks like a player in the limited vision I've seen. Great kicking action and speed. Good luck young man!

The appealing aspects of playing at Richmond

“The fans and the culture. And there’s a lot of history, obviously. Great club, most successful club in the recent era . . . I can’t wait to run out and play on the ‘G’. The whole club is very attractive, so I can’t wait to play for them.”

THE RICHMOND DEBUTANT WHICH SURPRISED MATTHEW RICHARDSON

Club great Matthew Richardson said he was surprised to see Mansell make his debut early considering how late he was added on Richmond’s list.

“It’s good news for Richmond and their supporters,” he said on Sportsday after the two debutants were named.

“We haven’t seen a lot of new faces because they’ve been winning and successful, (Rhyan) Mansell is a bit of a surprise as he was literally the last man (added) on the list.

“He’s a hard at it back pocket (player) and runs hard so he’ll slot into the back half.” “I thought it would’ve been (Hugo) Ralphsmith (to come in earlier) but he was suspended in the VFL.”

More of a defender this kid.

I think we will see Pickett and someone else (?Edwards) on the wing.

Houli, Mansell, Short as small backs.
