Richmond AFL legend Royce Hart is in hospital after a serious road accident in Hobart.

Hart was involved in a head-on collision on Sunday on the East Derwent Highway.

Tasmanian police released a statement, detailing: “The driver of the Nissan, a 73-year-old man from Oakdowns was taken to hospital with serious injuries.”

The driver of the other car, and their passenger, were also transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Hart is a revered figure, selected in the AFL’s Team of the Century and named a Legend of the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

He won four premierships with Richmond, lifting the cup as captain twice, and earned two best-and-fairest awards.

Police investigating

“At 11.15am today, a blue Nissan Dualis was travelling east on the East Derwent Highway, Risdon Cove, when it collided head on with a blue MCG hatch being driven in the opposite direction,” Tasmania Police said.

“The driver of the Nissan, a 73-year-old man from Oakdowns, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“The driver of the MG hatch, a 77-year-old man from Bellerive and his passenger, a 74-year-old woman also from Bellerive, were also transported to hospital with serious injuries.

“The crash occurred 500 metres east of Saundersons Road and both vehicles were extensively damaged.

“Crash Investigation Services attended and are investigating the cause of the crash.

“The road was closed for about four hours.”

Nine news interviewed Royce at his home today. He said he's okay and on the mend. He broke ribs and his sternum in the car crash.

Balmey rang Royce up to see how he was and what the Club could do for him.

They also asked Royce about the best Richmond era. He said his era won 4 flags to the current 3, so come back next year when the current group has won 4  :snidegrin. Royce wouldn't say Dusty was the greatest ever Tiger either  ;).

Royce could do things ordinary footballers couldn't.
Too see him float across the front of a crowded pack to take the mark was a thing of beauty.

Mind you some of the things we have all seen Dusty do just beggars belief.

Who was better? Who cares. I consider myself lucky to have seen both of them live.
Yeah we're already going to vote for him mate, you don't need to keep selling it.....

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
