We’ve paired these two top Tigers, who share duties leading the football department with help from senior advisor Neil Balme, as they head into a trade period in a very different scenario to that of recent years.

For once, Richmond isn’t simply trying to top-up a premiership list, adding a free agent like Tom Lynch or just eyeing movement around the fringes. They’ve already been busy, with Mabior Chol departing in free agency and at least one trade to work out with North Melbourne as Callum Coleman-Jones exits and Robbie Tarrant joins.

But it’s their hefty draft hand that makes the Tigers so interesting this year. After free agency compensation, they now hold seven top-47 selections - 7, 15, 26, 28, an end-of-second-round pick, 42 and 47. They’ll add another in the Coleman-Jones trade.

They’ve reportedly already offered a deal to Adelaide to try and move up to pick 4, which was rejected, and could be a suitor for Gold Coast’s pick 3, while sending several late picks to the Western Bulldogs for pick 17 makes a lot of sense for both sides.

At the very least, expect the Tigers to try and consolidate their picks in some fashion, because they don’t need to take eight usable picks into the draft - they wouldn’t be able to use them all.

The Western Bulldogs, who need points to match a bid for father-son prospect Sam Darcy (likely to fall in the top five), are eyeing Richmond’s picks 26 and 28 in a trade for their pick 17.

The Age reports the Magpies will target third and fourth-round picks from other clubs - for reference pick 40, the first in the third round, is worth 429 points - and are willing to trade out future second or third-round picks.

They could also trade out one of their earlier picks for a number of late selections - for example 36 for Brisbane’s 47, 51 and 57.

To make things more complicated, Collingwood must have a vacant spot on its list for every pick it gains in the 2021 draft. This is why it’s believed eight players - Isaac Chugg, Mason Cox, Max Lynch, John Noble, Scott Pendlebury, Jay Rantall, Brayden Sier and Josh Thomas - remain officially unsigned (though Pendlebury clearly will be).

The Magpies are also looking to trade in the Western Bulldogs’ Patrick Lipinski and Geelong’s Nathan Kreuger; they’re keen to use future picks, or at worst their later third-round picks, to add the pair.

True Andyy. We'll definitely have to pay more in points to get 17 otherwise it's no point (excuse the pun) for the Dogs to do it.

My earlier post was looking at how the Dogs could get all their points for Darcy from us. But it sounds now more like they just want some of the points from us they'll need for Darcy. So you're idea of 38+41+46 for 17 makes sense. I think we've now got 38+42+47 with the other compos paid (1176 pts). If we give away CCJ for 40 as 7 news suggests then we could offer 40+42+47 = 1140 pts.

Hawthorn's rebuild is on and trading away one of their two midfield guns has been flagged as a way for new coach Sam Mitchell to secure high-end draft picks to use on elite young talent. Richmond are one club that have a strong draft hand and could look to Mitchell or O'Meara to beef up their on-ball division for another premiership tilt.

 Not getting why the Bulldogs would be eyeing off 26 and 28. They only need the pick points value so the draft number is not relevant
