HOW RICHMOND’S “HAND HAS BEEN FORCED” AND WHY IT PROVIDES A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale sees Shai Bolton’s impending absence as a great chance for the club to blood some youth.

The 22-year-old is expected to miss up to three weeks with a fractured wrist sustained in a nightclub incident, adding to the injury woes the Tigers are currently dealing with.

Bolton joins the likes of captain Trent Cotchin (hamstring), Dion Prestia (calf), Kane Lambert (calf) and Shane Edwards (ankle) in the medical room, which will undoubtedly weaken the team’s midfield.

Despite the disappointment of the Bolton situation, which also involves Daniel Rioli, the Tigers chief is looking at it as a chance for Damien Hardwick’s side to grow.

Gale also believes the reigning premiers have overcome greater challenges over the last few years than what they currently face at 4-4 with vital players out of action.

“Not really,” he said on SEN Breakfast when asked if it was the greatest challenge the team has faced.

“I remember in '19 we turned 7-6, we played Adelaide before the bye with 17 players unavailable. I think Dustin (Martin) was captain that night.

“So, I don’t think so. Every cloud has a silver lining. I guess one of the problems with being a winning team over the last few years is we haven’t had the opportunity to play a lot of the younger players.

“Now our hand has been forced. So I think the mood here is one of real excitement and anticipation of challenges that lay ahead.

“We’ve got some opposition the next few weeks that are going to be very tough. We’re going to get some really good looks at some young players we’ve been dying to get in the team for a fair while.”
