Club Corner - May 15
« on: May 15, 2006, 11:58:22 PM »
Paul Armstrong

* Opposition getting off to a flyer can take the wind out of the sails of a young side. We fought back for a quarter or so then got blown away. Disappointing.

* We thought 4 guys would come up for the game but none did. Hall was the surprise one.

* We need pace and experience. Unfortunately pace is in the young blokes who are inexperienced. Need time but we're on the right track.

* Johnson - more unlikely than likely
* Kellaway and Hall - hopeful but not confident (unlikely). Sounded like Gas was the same ???.
* Schulz - 2 weeks away
* Roach - 1-2 weeks
* Moore - next fortnight
* Casserly - next month
* Chaffey - play with Coburg seniors this week.

* Best Coburg - Knobel, Patto, Rodan and White.

* Coburg vs North Ballarat  - Next Sunday at Coburg City Oval, 2pm.

They interviewed Joel. Also spoke to Daffy who's setting up another business down at the Docklands with Dave Hughes and Tarrant.

* Few positives with our young blokes - Krakouer (best game is a while), Tambling and Foley.

* Joel has played on Hall before as did fairly well. Unfortunately got carved up.

* Injuries a cop out as we still had 6 defenders.

* Our form is up and down. We are competitive when we tackle and chase. We did that the last 5 weeks before the Swans game.

* 200 games is something he'll look back when he retires. Right now shows he was able to play AFL for a number of years. Thanked the RFC.

* Believes we can win this week against the Crows as long as we do the 1%ers (tackle and chase), use the footy well and score 15-16 goals including from midfielders and rebounding defenders like himself. Need to be hard and accountable. We can't let playing at the Dome become an issue. We're meant to be a professional team and be able to play anywhere. Hopes we can get to where the Crows are at now in the next 18 months or so.

* You take a bit from all your coaches including junior ones. Walls was a hard taskmaster but grateful to him for giving him his first game. Wallace more attacking than Frawley (a bit of a understatement Joel lol).

* Prides himself on being able to read the play and rebound. A good game for Joel is if he can beat his man on the day and not let him get many goals then that's a tick. If he gets the footy and uses it well than that's another tick.

* Been fairly consistent exept for a downer late 2003-early 2004. From 2000 to now only been out of the top 4 B&F once in 2003. Only missed one game in the past 9 years.

* Joel gets burned off by the young guys in handball and ring games at training. That speed is a good sign for the club. Mentioned Tambling, Polo and Raines down back with him.

* Some blokes take longer to bulk up - eg: Tucky took till he was 21 to add on the weight. Polo, Tambling , Meyer will continue to get bigger and stronger but maintain their pace.

* Asked about us being down on skills. Believes our young guys are far far better than those that have arrived in the past so we'll improve in that area in the future.

* Spoke growing up in Alice Springs and playing alongside Aboriginal kids. Doesn't believe he'll be Melbourne based forever after he retires. Wouldn't mind heading back to the Alice or Darwin to bring up a family.

* Richo in best form. Hopes other senior blokes will maintain their form over the next 3-4 years and we can fast track our youngsters.

* Wouldn't mind be remembered along the lines of Paul Williams when he finishes.

Adam Potter -  Coburg assistant coach

* Accountability was lacking in the second half. Allowed Willy players to get goal side.

* Best - Knobel (great attitude), Patto, Mullins, Kuret in first half.

* Coburg list is 38 which is less than other clubs (other clubs 45) but only been short one week against Werribee which we won anyway.

* This week - Coburg vs North Ballarat at home - Sunday 2.10pm

That's not was being said on the website.  See the injuries thread.  Said Schultz was only 1 week away.  Moore only a week away.  If Johnson, Kellaway, Hall & Gas are unlikely shouldn't they really say at least 1 week rather than get everyone's hopes up.

If the backline is missing again then this week could get even more ugly than the high degree of ugliness that one might already expect.

I'd guess the Club won't rule them out completely just in case they suddenly improve in the next few days and are able to play. Those injury lists has been saying Moore is 1-2 weeks away for the past month or two  ???.

Andrew Kuuse spent some time with Joel Bowden at his home yesterday for Richmond Club Corner. Bowden spoke about the 118 point loss to Sydney, playing on Barry Hall and Richmond’s finals aspirations.

Chaffey ready to stake a claim

The ‘forgotten man’ of Tigerland, Mark Chaffey, is set to take another significant step on his comeback trail this weekend when he lines up for Coburg’s senior side in the VFL.

Chaffey, 29, resumed with Coburg reserves last weekend after missing three weeks with a calf injury. Before that, he’d played just two games with Coburg seniors this season following a lengthy battle with osteitis pubis, which had severely restricted his pre-season training.

“Mark played quite well with Coburg seconds last week. He got through the game okay and has pulled up well since. The plan now is for him to step up to Coburg seniors and play there this weekend. Hopefully, he can come through that well and start to push for senior selection with us,” said Richmond’s Football Operations Manager Paul Armstrong.

“He’s a proven senior player with considerable experience and that’s something we’re lacking at the moment with so many on our injury list. It would certainly be handy for us to have him available for selection.”

Three other Richmond players, who have been on the long-term injury list – Jay Schulz (shoulder), Tom Roach (jaw) and Kelvin Moore (groin) are expected to return the following week.
