Round 1, 2022: Richmond vs Carlton @ the MCG, Thurs. March 17

It's behind a paywall but I presume this is one of the annual 'Richmond vs Carlton' shouldn't be the season opener articles.

Carlton's failure to rise to the occasion has taken the shine off the season-opener. Here's how the AFL can bring Round 1, 2022 back to life ...

There's a push for Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs to kick start the 2022 season at the MCG instead of Richmond and Carlton.

Thoughts?

To be honest i would prefer not to be part of the season opener at all purely because the AFL will of course tweak the rules leading up to the commencement of the season, we are generally on the butt end of these interpretations for the first game and then they adjust the rules for the remaining round, extremely annoying and frustrating to watch.

Sam McClure says it’s looking “increasingly likely” Melbourne will begin its premiership defence against the Western Bulldogs under lights in Round 1.

The Sportsday co-host said Carlton and Richmond would almost certainly kick off the 2022 season on Thursday night, as has been the norm for more than a decade.

But a grand final rematch looks likely for the Friday night of Round 1.

Tigers and Blues to open season

Carlton and Richmond will again open the men’s season next year, in front of what the AFL hopes will be a near capacity crowd at the MCG.

Thursday, March 24 is the likely date for our season opener.

Carlton is keen to open the Michael Voss era in its traditional Thursday night opening-round match against Richmond at the MCG.

The clubs have opened the season the past seven years and squared off in the opening round 14 of the past 15 seasons.

REPORT: AFL WEIGHING UP WEDNESDAY NIGHT BLOCKBUSTER TO START SEASON 2022

The AFL is reportedly strongly considering a Wednesday night blockbuster to open the 2022 season in a potential break of fixture tradition.

According to The Herald Sun, the league is weighing up scheduling a Grand Final rematch between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs or the traditional season opener between Carlton and Richmond on a Wednesday night.

The Blues and Tigers have opened the AFL season at the MCG on a Thursday night since 2007.

An earlier start would allow the league to schedule three standalone blockbuster Round 1 clashes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights.

The Herald Sun understands a decision is expected to be made this week.
