David King believes the recent success of Melbourne and Richmond showcases that an attacking style of football is the way to go, hitting out at the “Geelong model” of footy.
The Cats have been renowned for their slow, deliberate play since Chris Scott took over as head coach in 2011.
“I hate that brand of footy.
“In a weird way, I want to see that version of football fail.
“I like when teams attack, play with some flair.”
King sees similarities between them [Melbourne] and Richmond’s era of dominance in the seasons preceding 2021, where they could also kick high scores.
“Richmond have been the same, haven’t they? Richmond have had a penchant to score, the way they defend helps them score, and the way they attack still gives them a chance to set up behind the footy,” he said.
However, he’s not holding his breath expecting others to follow suit.
“I think the more teams look to score, the better the competition will be, but I fear that won’t be the case,” he said.
“The Geelong model’s proven to be successful, that’s the problem.
“Defending with the ball has brought some success.
“The West Coast have done it, and they’ve won a flag four years ago.
“So, it can be done, which is in a way disappointing.”
