Geelong CEO Steve Hocking has been left “unsettled” by the amount of “bellyaching” going on in the AFL at the moment.

It comes after Jimmy Bartel asked him what he thinks the most pressing issue is in the competition.

“I can’t believe the amount of things that are being introduced that don’t need to be introduced,” Hocking said.

Richmond legend slams 'worst rule' in the AFL

Sayantan Guha
Sporting News
25 April 2025

Richmond great Kevin Bartlett has launched a scathing attack on the AFL's stand rule, branding it the worst in any sport worldwide.

The rule, which was introduced in 2023 to promote quicker ball movement and ease congestion, restricts players on the mark from moving at all, effectively turning them into what Bartlett described as "statues."

The Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend made his thoughts clear during a fiery segment on 3AW radio.

"The worst rule in any sport in the world, is the stand rule. It becomes 18 versus 17," Bartlett said. "The game of Australian rules football was never, ever designed for that."

Bartlett, a five-time premiership player with 403 games for the Tigers, didn't hold back as he explained how the rule undermines the very fabric of the sport.

"That's why we had 19th and 20th men, that's why we brought in interchange, because we never wanted to have 18 versus 17," he continued.

"And we've brought in a rule that makes it 18 versus 17 because the poor man on the mark is an absolute statue and cannot move."

He also rubbished claims that the rule had improved the spectacle, instead suggesting it had done the opposite.

"I don't think it's done anything for the game other than make it a laughing stock," he said.

"A bloke moves his big toe and he gets a 50 metre penalty. What sort of game are we playing? It is the worst rule ever. The most disgraceful rule in the history of the game."

Bartlett lamented the loss of what he called "a real art", guarding the mark, and argued that players no longer practise or perfect it at training. "It was an art once. It's now completely disappeared."

THE AFL last night wrote to clubs informing them that the stand rule will be a focus this week after concerns of a "creep" by some teams. The league is also concerned by a rise in umpire contact and is threatening more free kicks and suspensions if it doesn't cease. @1116sen

"Some teams" = Collingwood.

In any case the stand rule is and has also been a joke.

It was actually Essendon that complained. Atleast they’re the ones that publicly said they did this week.

The memo sent to AFL clubs to clarify stand rule

By Andrew Slevison
SEN
2 May 2025

The AFL has sent a memo to all 18 clubs to clarify the stand rule.

It comes after Essendon coach Brad Scott said the AFL had admitted to errors in regards to the stand rule and the protected area.

SEN’s Sam Edmund has posted on X part of the memo that clubs received relating to how umpires have been told to adjudicate the stand rule and protected area following a bit of “creep”.

See the diagram below:

The notes on the memo below:

We have had some queries from clubs regarding our application of the stand rule, see below for clarity.
When a Player is awarded a Mark or Free Kick, one Player fROm the opposing Team may:

a ) stand on The Mark; or
b ) otherwise be directed by a field Umpire to move outside 5m.

For the avoidance of doubt, all other Players from the opposing Team must be positioned behind The Mark or otherwise outside the Protected Area defined in Law 20.1.2.
