Richmond 2022 AFL Fixture
« on: December 09, 2021, 12:53:49 PM »
Tigers set for home Dreamtime, 14 games at the 'G
The AFL has today announced the 2022 AFL fixture, with timeslots confirmed for the opening nine rounds.

By Richmond Media - Just now

Richmond will play a bumper 14 games at the MCG as part of the Club's 2022 fixture, announced by the AFL today.

Most notably, Richmond will host Essendon in Dreamtime at the 'G, the first Dreamtime clash between the teams in Melbourne since 2019.

Dreamtime at the 'G is a platform for the Club to strengthen connections and celebrate Indigenous culture at a national level. In the past 10 years, 772,000 have attended the game and over 10 million people have watched on TV.

The 2021 instalment promises to be one of the most highly anticipated Dreamtime's since its emergence as a marquee AFL fixture, given the three-year absence from the MCG and the Bombers' rise to finals football in 2021.

Richmond will also host early-season home blockbusters against last year's grand finalists, the Western Bulldogs (Saturday night- Round 4) and Melbourne (Sunday night- Round 6).

The Round 6 Anzac Day Eve clash with the Demons is sure to attract a massive crowd, given the two teams are the AFL's most recent premiers, and the occasion a prominent night on the AFL calendar.

As announced last week, Richmond will again play Carlton in a massive Thursday Night Round 1 clash. The Tiger Army will also be treated to a home Saturday afternoon match against Collingwood at the MCG in Round 8.

Richmond will return to Friday night football against West Coast at Optus Stadium in Round 7, broadcast live on Channel 7.

The Tigers are also on the road in Round 5, where they will meet Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.

Richmond will play Sunday afternoon clashes in Melbourne against GWS (Round 2) and St Kilda (Round 3).

The Round 10-23 fixture will remain floating, with exact dates and times to be added to the matchups and fixtures that were announced today.

Richmond will play Essendon, Hawthorn, West Coast, Carlton and Port Adelaide twice in 2022, while the Club will have its Bye in Round 12, the weekend of June 3.

How funny that we aren't playing Collingwood twice anymore but now with Carlton and Essendon.

Funny that.

So Port Adelaide, West Coast, Essendon, Carlton, Hawthorn twice.

Mouthwatering clashes you won't want to miss in 2022 - Richmond

Michael Whiting

Carlton's first game under Voss the Boss

A new coach always brings hope, and there's a little extra oomph for Carlton fans with the appointment of Michael Voss. Brisbane's triple premiership captain last had a senior job in 2013 and will be thrown straight into the fire in the opening round against Richmond at the MCG on Thursday, March 17.

Anzac Day eve

This could be one of the most highly anticipated matches of the year – the reigning premier Melbourne against a dynastic Richmond outfit that is hoping to rise again. Although the following day's contest between Essendon and Collingwood has the history, this one featuring Dustin Martin against Christian Petracca and Steven May against Tom Lynch has the makings of being a showstopper.

Dreamtime at the 'G

The Essendon-Richmond contest at the MCG has become synonymous with Sir Doug Nicholls Round, but like so many things in the past two years, has been forced into change. The games in Darwin (2020) and Perth (2021) have been incredible spectacles and terrific for the code at large, but a return to a packed 'home' should be extra special in 2022. This huge clash will happen in round 10.

Richmond v North Melbourne

During a relatively quiet Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, the swap between the Tigers and Kangaroos of Callum Coleman-Jones and Robbie Tarrant was fascinating. Will Richmond acquiring the veteran defender or North Melbourne with the young and imposing key forward/ruck have the bigger impact when they clash in round 18?

No surprise we don't have many prime time games after the way we finished this year.

Handy to playing GWS in round 2 with Greene still suspended.

Can't really complain as a whole. If we're good enough and 2021 was just a "blip" then we should play finals. We only play one of the top 6 from this year twice and that's Port. They finally have to play us at the 'G.

torch, we only play Collingwood once because with our large supporter base it's better for the AFL and its attendance figures for us to play smaller supporter-base teams. These small clubs would also request home games against us to boost their coffers. No coincidence we play only once and away games against Norf, St Kilda and the Suns.

I hope you're right Ramps but to be honest I'm not as confident. Not that it can't happen but we'll need everything to go right in 2022 for it to happen IMHO. Few injuries to our older players unlike this year when we got hammered. Plus a number of our younger blokes like RCD finally stepping up in key roles to take the workload off our veteran champions.

The one good thing so far this preseason is we've got all the squad aside from Will Martyn on the track training (touchwood).

RICHMOND

Average percentage of double-up opponents: 100.46% (eighth-easiest)

Pros ... Not finishing near the top of the ladder brings with it a silver lining in a relatively favourable draw, with two games each against Hawthorn and Essendon very winnable. A whopping 14 games at the MCG.

Cons ... Not much wrong with the Tigers’ fixture considering the side’s pedigree, and a great chance to bounce back.

10 AFL FIXTURES YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS IN 2022

By Nathan John
SEN
24 December 2021

6. Richmond vs. Melbourne

Round 6, MCG

The two most recent premiers will meet on Anzac Eve, a match in which the Dees announced themselves as contenders and Christian Petracca foretold of his Norm Smith success.

In October the Tigers signed veteran key defender Robbie Tarrant from North Melbourne, signposting their intent to resume contention.

To borrow a line from former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, each of Nick Vlastuin, Dion Prestia, Dustin Martin and Kane Lambert will be “like a new signing” after injury-impacted seasons.

Can the Tigers stem the crimson and navy tide in the centre, break up the Demon duopoly of Steven May and Jake Lever, and ride their surging football back to the pinnacle of the game?

8. Richmond vs. Essendon

Round 10, MCG

The first Dreamtime at the ‘G in three years - pandemic pending - will take on a different character again, with Richmond’s season still firmly on the rails when the last was played.

Damien Hardwick’s men are clinging to the status they established over three Grand Final victories in four seasons, and the aura that had descended.

Last time around, the Bombers scrapped their way into the lead with 13 minutes to play in Perth, having trailed by 30, but the Tigers refused to stop believing and piled on the last seven goals.

It was a crushing defeat for the Dons, having not won a Dreamtime match since 2014. The balance of power in the game had been prolonged.

On the flip side, the fixture remains an opportunity for Ben Rutten’s charges to truly announce themselves when they are ready.

Richmond's Round 10 and 11 fixtures have today been confirmed, with the Tigers set for a home Dreamtime clash followed by a trip to Sydney.

The Tigers will host Essendon in Dreamtime at the 'G on Saturday, May 21 at 7.30pm for the first Dreamtime game between the two teams in Melbourne since 2019.

After Dreamtime matches in Darwin (2020) and Perth (2021), the 2022 instalment promises to be one of the most highly anticipated Dreamtimes since its emergence as a marquee AFL fixture.

The Tigers will then travel to Sydney the next week to face the Swans on Friday, May 27 from 7.50pm. The clash will be Richmond's first match at the SCG since Round 23, 2016.

Both matches will celebrate Sir Doug Nicholls Round, with the Round 11 match to be the Swans' annual Marn Grook game.

Following this, the Club will then have its Bye in Round 12, on the weekend of June 3.
