Martyn free out of the centre. Kicks to Ryan 60 out at CHF. Goes long and off hands for a rushed behind.

Don't expect from our VFL side this year. Talk about dumb mistakes  :help.

Had the ball in our forward half for the past 5 minutes but couldn't hit a target by hand or foot inside 50 to save us.

Geelong then run it up and goal :facepalm.

Only watched P6.

Gee that was ugly.

Pickett looked OK. I reckon Stack will be delisted at the end of the year.

LMAO @ people writing off players based on a six "period" practice match where everyone's just trying to get a run into their legs without getting injured and in the  the last two "quarters" the magoos filled in, the opposition trainers were the field umpires and one of our assistant coaches was a goal umpire.... :shh

Brown (very good skills and poise) and Sonsie showed a bit.

Pickett was solid on a wing.

Martyn and Caddy were ok.

The rest were ordinary.

Miller clearly ahead of Biggie in the KPD pecking order after today.

Stack and Maurice both disappointing. Need to do the bread and butter stuff properly first.

Can't see Cumberland surviving the cut at the end of the season.

Judd Clarke hardly sighted but he's a first yearer in his first hitout so obviously give him time.

Ryan had one nice ruck tap to advantage as well as good contested mark and goal in the space of two minutes but all up was pretty meh!

It's going to be a looooonnnnnnggggg year for our VFL side when looking at our VFL-listed players too.

--------------------------------------------------------

DUSTIN Martin and Ivan Soldo made successful returns from injury as a hungry Richmond ran away from Geelong in an entertaining practice match at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.

Although the Tigers led 17.8 (110) to 12.20 (92) after four quarters before VFL players and several draftees took to the field, Cats fans also had plenty to be pleased with from the hitout.

Tyson Stengle was magnificent in his first game for Geelong and could have just solved its small forward riddle for coach Chris Scott.

After previous stints at Richmond and Adelaide before arriving at the Cattery in November as a delisted free agent, Stengle put on a masterclass to kick four goals and have a hand in plenty of other scoring chains.

The 23-year-old roamed up the ground to take marks, used precise kicking into the forward 50 and was then a handful when within range of goal.

Dustin Martin got through all four quarters, mostly onball, to complete his first serious hitout since suffering a kidney injury that wiped away the end of his 2021 season.

He was energetic, highly involved, and despite the odd mistake, showed his class in laying on a couple of goals with pinpoint kicks.

Ivan Soldo also got through after almost 18 months out with knee injuries, kicking two goals as a permanent forward.

Shai Bolton was fantastic for the Tigers, while Tom Lynch kicked three goals in a half of action before he was rested.

Tom Hawkins looked as good as ever with four goals, while Tom Stewart controlled the defensive 50 for Geelong.

After an additional two quarters were played, largely with VFL players, Geelong scraped home by five points, 20.27 (147) to 21.16 (142).

YOUNG GUNS

Geelong would be stoked with what it saw from Max Holmes. After 12 games in his debut season, Holmes was moved into the midfield and made a great fist of his chance, adding speed and defensive pressure around the contest, as well as some pinpoint kicking. The Tigers had plenty of young faces who impressed. Thomson Dow racked up plenty of disposals in his inside midfield role, Hugo Ralphsmith was aggressive at half-back and gathered a number of contested possessions, while No.9 draft pick Josh Gibcus hauled in a few intercept marks against the potent Cats forwards and became more involved as the match wore on.

SWITCHING POSITIONS

Aside from Max Holmes' successful switch to the midfield, Brad Close also played notably higher up the ground, spending time on the wing left vacant by the absent Mitch Duncan. Close was a good connector between the midfield and forwards and hurried his Richmond opponents with excellent pressure. He split his time forward as well. Joel Selwood, as he began to do last season, spent more time on the wing and half-forward than he did around the contest.

INJURY WATCH

Thankfully both teams appeared to get through unscathed. Kamdyn McIntosh tweaked his ankle early in the match after landing underneath Jeremy Cameron, but he returned to roar up and down the wing for four quarters. Shai Bolton landed awkwardly after a marking attempt in the final minutes, but hobbled off and was quickly back into a jog.

FANTASY TEMPTERS

Tom Stewart (DEF, $812,000) has been as reliable as any defender since he entered the AFL in 2017, and this season looks like being no different. Stewart was central to most things Geelong generated from its back half, gathering plenty of disposals and hauling in a stack of marks. He looked every bit as good as any stage of his career.

Tigers stars return as Stengle shows promise in debut for Cats

Peter Ryan
The Age
February 26, 2022 — 3.55pm

Richmond defeated an inaccurate Geelong in the first four quarters of their practice match at GMHBA Stadium as Tom Lynch and Dustin Martin made successful returns from minor niggles and the Cats’ Tyson Stengle showed he will be a valuable acquisition with four goals.

Cats defender Tom Stewart also made a successful return in his first match back from the foot injury that kept him sidelined during last year’s finals series, showing he had lost none of his dash or spring as he cleaned up in defence.

The Cats had seven more scoring shots than Richmond but lost by 18 points before both teams shook hands, with the senior group replaced by each club’s VFL line-ups for two more 30-minute periods of play.

Shai Bolton was outstanding for the Tigers, while Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins showed they will once again be a dangerous combination inside 50. It was a good test for Tigers defenders Robbie Tarrant and Josh Gibcus, with Tarrant battling at times as he eases his way into a new system after crossing from North Melbourne.

Martin was good when near the action, feeding off Tigers co-captain Toby Nankervis and Ivan Soldo who gave Rhys Stanley a workout in the ruck.

Patrick Dangerfield was quiet as he tuned up for another season in familiar fashion with the Cats exposing Max Holmes and Shaun Higgins in the centre with Mitch Duncan and Sam Menegola missing and Joel Selwood starting forward on occasions.

Sam De Koning is going to get first crack in defence for Geelong, while Hugo Ralphsmith is performing well across half-back in a sign he will play there in round one. Sydney Stack played in the VFL and Marlion Pickett played one quarter in the AFL match before continuing on in the VFL.

Richmond were penalised at one stage for dissent after claiming a kick for goal by Jed Bews had been touched with either Jack Riewoldt or Nathan Broad the culprit. It shapes as an interesting factor this season as the AFL cracks down on players disputing decisions in a demonstrative manner.

The only injury concern came in the VFL match when Cooper Stephens left the ground to have his ankle – which gave him trouble in 2021 – assessed. Stephens had shown a fondness for the contest in the final quarter of the AFL match, with one stoppage clearance exceptional.

THE NEW KIDS

Gibcus looks poised to play in round one after getting the job on Cameron. Cameron had his measure but Gibcus would have benefitted from the experience and showed how his clean hands and leap will be an asset. Geelong are also blooding De Koning in defence, with the youngster battling against Tom Lynch. De Koning is athletic and big enough to hold down a key position so should be given time to develop. Both sides played youngsters after three-quarter time in the main match, with Shannon Neale’s high leaping a standout for Geelong and Tom Brown showing ability for the Tigers.

THE COACH’S BOX

Selwood is starting across half-forward before drifting into the midfield while the Cats expose more players in the middle. Dangerfield spent time forward without having a major impact, with the Cats’ structure familiar. Richmond’s Ralphsmith will replace Bachar Houli across half-back and although he plays in a different fashion to Houli he will get first crack in the role. The Tigers have pushed Noah Balta forward where he will take time to find consistency but will be a threatening presence as he develops. Soldo is also a handy addition in the ruck to work in tandem with Nankervis, meaning Pickett can avoid being required for hit-outs.

WHO STOOD OUT

Stengle was the most dynamic Cat on the ground in the first three stanzas, kicking four goals and being a lively presence as a small forward inside 50. At the feet of Hawkins and Cameron he will need to make the most of his opportunities but the former Tiger and Crow looks an excellent addition. Higgins also shone early in the midfield after a frustrating first season at the Cats in 2021, while Zach Guthrie is ready to cement a spot in defence. Richmond’s Tom Lynch has recovered from his hamstring injury and played well as did Martin, who enjoyed the blow-out after missing the end of last season. Bolton was among the Tigers’ best.

WHO’S MISSING

Mitch Duncan remains doubtful for round one as he battles a calf injury, while Jack Henry, Sam Menegola and Jonathon Ceglar are yet to appear this season for the Cats, but they remain chances to be available for selection against the Suns. The Tigers rested Trent Cotchin, Dan Rioli and Dylan Grimes, while Jack Graham (hamstring) is in doubt and Kane Lambert (hip) won’t be ready for round one.

WHAT’S NEXT

Saturday, March 5: Hawthorn v Richmond, Devonport Oval 1.10pm
Monday, March 7: Gold Coast v Geelong, Metricon Stadium 6.40pm

That John Jorgenson impressed me from the vfl side.

29/11/1999, 198cm, 94kg, key forward

A developing key forward from Bundoora.

The fact that stack only played in the ‘vfl’ quarters is quite telling in terms of his pecking order in the list.

Didn’t watch as I don’t have kayo but if the comments on this thread are accurate and we were getting killed on the defensive transition then that’s a worrying sign practice match or not. That and our horrible forward 50 entries were where we dropped off significantly last season so would have been hoping to see a bit more control immediately after losing possession. You’re rarely gonna win a game conceding 32 shots at goal. Still work to be done I guess, main thing is no serious injuries out of the game.
