Injury updates 2022
« on: March 03, 2022, 07:49:55 PM »
Physical performance manager, Peter Burge's latest injury report.

Kane Lambert, hip - See Lambert thread.

Jack Graham, hamstring

"Jack's going really well. Jack resumed footy skills this week. Jack's had a number of complaints over the pre-season, he's had a hip, a back issue, a glute issue, and then a little hamstring issue on the camp. So, he's missed quite a bit of football skills training, but he's done quite a lot of conditioning. It's that transition from the conditioning to the football training now that we're trying to get a bit more rock-solid, get back-to-back football sessions, and then ultimately some game time. He's not going to play this week against Hawthorn and then we'll be assessing closer to Round 1 what his match play return looks like. But at the moment, he's just working really hard doing the football sessions and we're doing some extra work this weekend, he won't be playing so he'll be doing a pretty big session with a few other guys this Saturday."

Nick Vlastuin, hamstring

"Nick had an incident in the practice match against Geelong last Saturday in the last 30 seconds of the game, where he got a shove in the back and in the same motion within a few steps, kicked the ball quite long and just came to the bench after the game and said he felt a little bit of an issue with his lower hamstring. He started running against last Tuesday, and today he was running and kicking the ball again. It's pretty minor but it's just enough to rule him out of this week (against Hawthorn). I expect he'll be back to full training next week and have a pretty smooth transition into Round 1."

Riley Collier-Dawkins, ribs

"Two days before the Geelong game during our main training session, Riley copped a knock to his ribs and was quite sore the next day. We just made the decision that he would miss the game on the weekend. We weren't too sure if he had a little fracture or broken ribs, but it's turned out that it wasn't too bad and he's recovered quite well. He's trained all week and is available for selection."

Sam Banks, quad

"He's had a couple of niggles since being drafted and we've just taken the time to give him a longer conditioning phase and return to football training phase. He had a little bit of a quad niggle about four weeks ago. So, it's really more of a long-term conditioning focus given he's a draftee and is young, and setting him up for the year. He's been back at training this week, he's done two sessions and we'll give him another couple of weeks of skills training and then we'll look at when he can return to playing in some games.'

Matt Parker, ankle

"'Parks' in our intraclub had a little bit of an ankle issue. He just missed last week and has returned to training this week. He's available for selection this weekend."

Peter Burge's latest injury report:

Jack Graham (hamstring)

"Jack's available to play this week. Jack's been back training with the main group for the last two weeks after an interrupted pre-season. The last two weeks have been really good. During his rehab process prior to that, he'd done a heap of running, covered a heap of distance, a heap of high-speed running, so his conditioning base is really good and the last two weeks he's been able to participate in skills. So, he's a little bit ahead of schedule and he's available for selection this week. Where he plays, we'll talk about as a match committee and make that decision."

Dylan Grimes (thumb)

See Grimes thread.

Kamdyn McIntosh (calf)

"Kamdyn played against Hawthorn in the game down in Tassie and pulled up with a sore calf, and it's taken a little bit longer to recover than we would have anticipated from the game. So, he's going to be unavailable this week. If the game had been a couple of days later on the weekend, he probably would have been available, but like with most soft tissue injuries, we'd prefer to take the week to make sure he's absolutely right for Round 2."

Nick Vlastuin (hamstring)

"Nick's, unfortunately, had a little bit of a setback. He had a fairly minor incident in the Geelong practice match and we had scans the following week which cleared him of any damage, and we just put him through a short rehab phase of running and kicking. Kicking was the actual original injury, he did it on a kick in the Geelong game. So, he had three rehab sessions where he kicked and felt pretty good and we put him back into the main group late last week, and just at the very start of his warm-up, on one of his kicks, he didn't feel very comfortable and sustained a little bit of further damage. Not major damage, but enough for us to say he's not ready to go. We're just going to have to take a little bit of a longer approach with his rehabilitation. It's a really tricky one, you've got hamstring injuries that you get running really fast, and you've got these hamstring injuries that occasionally occur with kicking, and they can be very tricky, and the rehab and the return from those needs to be carefully progressed. We're going to need to take a bit more time and care with his rehabilitation. We're thinking he'll miss a couple of weeks, it's very hard to put a time frame (on it), but hopefully not too long."

Kane Lambert (hip)

"Last time we spoke, there was all sorts of talk out there around surgery and surgeons. As I said last time, we were consulting various different specialists and he was undergoing some other therapies that we've just completed. The decision with Kane is that he's not having any surgery, he's increasing his training load and progressing his training. If he can stand up and train at that higher intensity and get a number of weeks under his belt, we'll then explore match play. What's important to note with Kane with his hip injury, is that he's had three previous surgeries on this same hip and also one on his other hip. The one we're dealing with at the moment, he's had significant management issues with it in the last year to two years. The last five years really...he's played in three Grand Finals with this hip injury, albeit that it wasn't as bad. But, as he's gotten a little bit older and played more games, it's become more of a management issue. So, we've spoken to all the specialists and got the best advice, and amongst Kane, the specialists, and our medical team, this is the plan that everyone has agreed upon and that's what we're going to progress forward with. So, Kane's increasing his training and we're really looking forward to seeing where that takes us over the next couple of weeks."

Sam Banks (quad)

"He's completed now a full week of football training. 'Banksy' has had a couple of niggles over the pre-season. What we'd like to see is another week or two of full football training, given he's a young first-year draftee. What's important to remember with these first-year players, is the last two to three years, they haven't played a lot of football because of COVID. So, we're taking a more careful approach with those young guys, we want them to have long careers and we want them to have the best chance to finish this season injury-free. He won't play this week in the VFL, but we'll look at it for the following week."

Injury Report: Round 2, 2022

Physical performance manager, Peter Burge's update from the RFC website.

Kamdyn McIntosh, calf

"Kamdyn ran today at top speed and he'll resume main training on Thursday this week. If he gets through that, he'll be available to play."

Nick Vlastuin, hamstring

"Nick's injury is a little bit more complicated. Nick's actually running flat out right now, he's pretty much close to top speed and he looks really great running. But, it was a kicking-related injury and the injury is quite low on his biceps muscle in his hamstring group. So, we're progressing his kicking in a very structured and specific manner, he's kicking a light football at the moment, short kicks, and that will be progressed stage by stage, increasing the distance and the size of the football to a point where hopefully he's kicking the full-size footy over a long distance in the next week or two. In terms of timewise, he's certainly not playing this week, and I'd say he's doubtful for the following week. But if we see some progression in the next week-and-a-half with his kicking, and then we can look at return to play. In the meantime, we're progressing that part of his rehab."

Kane Lambert, hip

"Kane stepped up his involvement in football last week and we're going to look to step it up again this week. He's doing most things in our training except our match play. Match play requires all forms of physical movement; laterally, bending down, picking up, top speed running, all those things. There are a number of things that he's now been able to do, we just need a body of work in those things. The final thing we need him to do is participate in a little bit of match play training which we're going to assess for Thursday. Once we get to that point, we're going to need a couple of weeks of backing up and doing that, and then we'll talk about match play. In the short-term, it's trying to get him to a point where he can participate in a little bit of match simulation at training, so we're going to assess that this week and see where we end up and we'll have an update next week."

Gotta  feeling Lambert will end up being placed on the LTI list so we can grab a pick in the MSD ....and he may not be the only one by the time it rolls around... :shh

Update from the AFL website:

Jack Riewoldt required thumb surgery after the Tigers' round one loss to Carlton and sat out the win over the Giants at the MCG on Sunday, but has made a strong recovery and is likely to line-up in the annual Maddie's Match at Marvel Stadium.

"Jack's going to train and he'll be available if he completes training this week," Richmond's physical performance manager Peter Burge told AFL.com.au.

"He saw the specialist yesterday and got the tick-off and he said to him he could train and, if he was comfortable, he could play, so I'm expecting that will happen. Jack's pretty tough so I'm expecting that will be the case."

Dylan Grimes was a late withdrawal for the win over the Giants after pulling up sore from training ahead of the game, but Burge said the Tigers' co-captain should be back to take on the Saints.

"It was pretty minor and a bit of a frustrating one. He slipped over at training the other day and pulled up sore and it's just an area that he's had a problem with in the past. The smart thing to do was not to play and he's settled fine. He will train on Wednesday and if that's fine then he'll be playing," Burge said.

Dion Prestia Prestia looks likely to play in round four against the Western Bulldogs as the Tigers take extra time on the important midfielder, with coach Damien Hardwick getting back some of his senior stars after an injury-hit start to the campaign.

Nick Vlastuin is participating in training as he takes cautious steps in his hamstring recovery, having not yet progressed to long-kicking drills. The Tigers are careful not to build his training up too quickly as they take a "very conservative" approach with the triple premiership defender.

Thomson Dow - see Dow thread.

Josh Caddy - VFL report says he has done a hamstring.

Early prognosis
Grimes missed the Tigers' win over Greater Western Sydney after pulling up sore from training but the club hopes he will be available this week. Riewoldt also faces a test after his thumb injury but is expected to play, but Vlastuin and Prestia won’t be available. The club is giving Martin as much time as he needs as he considers his next move, while Lambert is a long-term proposition with his hip injury. - Cal Twomey

Latest injury report from Peter Burge:

Watch: https://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/1096062/injury-report-riewoldt-prestia-vlastuin-lambert

------------------------

Dylan Grimes, hamstring

"Dylan will be sent for scans today (Tuesday) to check the severity of the injury. It's a fairy stock-standard type hamstring injury, running at reasonable high speed. He noticed it in the third quarter and came off the ground. It's really unfortunate for Dylan and for us. The last two months, Dylan's training has been interrupted quite frequently with various things. In January, he had a calf injury off the Christmas break and then he hurt his ankle in training, then he had COVID in the pre-season, then hurt his thumb... It's fair to say he's been very interrupted. His preparation hasn't been perfect, and there's no doubt that's probably played a bit of a role in this. It's just a really difficult situation, he was available to play and trained all last week, and it's not a great result for Dylan. But, we're going to do some good work in his rehab going forward and make sure we get him right and give him some consistently at training and then when he's back, we want him to stay back."

Jack Riewoldt, thumb

"Jack completed most of training at the end of last week but it was deemed by the match committee that he wasn't quite ready to go. He's training this week and if he completes training this Thursday, he'll be available for selection."

Dion Prestia, hamstring

"Dion's been really good. He's had a really good last two weeks. So, he's going to end up having only missed two games. He completed a huge session last Saturday and he's ticked all the boxes. He's worked really hard, as he did the previous couple of months, with his preparation. So, he trained today and he will train our main training on Thursday, and if that goes to plan, then he's available for selection for Saturday night."

Nick Vlastuin, hamstring

"Nick's going very well. He's now kicking the footy further with more intensity. He looked really good today... We feel like we've got over the hump there, and now it's just about consolidating and making sure we get a couple more back-to-back sessions...He won't play this week but it's looking pretty good for next week."

Kane Lambert, hip

"Kane, the last two weeks, has done our main training session. He's doing one main session per week and a light running session earlier in the week with his longer-term hip management. He'll repeat that process again this week. He's ticking a lot of boxes and it's going really well for Kane. He's getting some back-to-back sessions together and is going great which is fantastic for him."

Early prognosis
Grimes returned last week against the Saints but ended the game with ice around his hamstring and will miss the next block of games after a strain. Off-setting that for this week is the fact Prestia is likely to return from his own hamstring problem and Riewoldt should also be back after narrowly missing last week's loss to St Kilda after a skin infection in his thumb. Vlastuin looks more likely to be available in round five. - Cal Twomey
