Sheesh its time to swing the axe. We cannot tolerate such performances from players who lets face it are the usual culprits but rarely get dropped.
Team for me should go

FB: Stack 178/??  - Miller 198/98 - Grimes 193/92
HB: Broad 192/89 - Tarrant - 196/96 - Short 177/??

C: McIntosh 192/89 - Pickett 184/84 - Ralphsmith 188/??
R: Nankervis - 199/104 - Martin 187/90 - Bolton 175/??

HF: Sonsie 181/78 - Balta 194/100 - Cumberland 183/??
FF: Caddy 186/86 - Lynch 199/99 - Edwards 182/82

Int from : Rc-d 191/?? - Baker 176?? - Graham 181/83 - Cotchin 185/85 - Dow 182/?? - Gibcus 196/87

Not sure how many changes that is but you could sure make a case on 4 or 5 others as well.

Problem though Claw is bringing in so many players who performed poorly at VFL level (including poor onfield attitude in one case) isn't the answer either. The VFL side was flogged by 100 pts before some last quarter junk time goals got the margin under three figures. I'm told, aside from Sonsie, none of the others deserve promotion. If we're going to start gifting games and play the list for playing the list sake then that's a sign we've raised the white flag after only one round and it's full rebuild time. That's something you do in the second half of the season when finals are out of the question.

Agree MT. Excellent points.  I wouldn’t be giving easy games to underperforming VFL players unless they are working back from injury and need some competitive game time
If you can’t excel at vfl level your not going to make it in the AFL

Is it worth rotating Caddy as an inside mid through the middle. Before you jump on the suggestion please list the players who can step up to at least  compete in the middle .

That’s 7 changes with an additional 4 or 5 more to a team that lost by 4 goals from a team that lost by 100 in the 2’s.
Interesting.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

And i hate it when they give games to horrid performances in the seniors. It seems they are all out of form not just in the two,s.but ffs at least try to address the areas of concern with players who are right for the role.
Not playing Aarts and Castagna is not about one game its been going on for ages and the same is true for others as well.
Ya never know with enough decent mature players around them some of the vfl players may surprise.

The other thing our vfl team will get belted most games this year imo. Its just too young we dont have any mature types to help them out and have a dearth of players for key roles.

Do the exercise there would only be three players or a handful at most older than 24 including vfl listed players. if we take the attitude that they have to tear it up at vfl this year for weeks on end then very few will get games.

We also got games into the likes of Stack Dow rcd . Just because they were not picked rnd 1 should it mean they are not considered rnd 2.

Fair dinkum Stack doesnt fold under pressure like Rioli why do we tolerate this sort of crap. No Riewoldt no young tall fwd to play but Caddy can play and may also help in the middle.

It is literally a no brainer Sonsie over both Aarts and Castagna. He had good preseason games why ignore him when just about everyone in the club was off.

The talk by many was to Give Cumberland a game first up well bugger me nothings changed Castagna is putrid.
Prestia out  i reckon the best player we have with the best chance of impacting clearances is RCD.
McIntosh no one has a problem bringing him straight back in. pee rioli off.
Miller is purely structural i just like the idea of a KPD who is KPD SIZE to partner Tarrant.

Every year it seems posters are scared of change even after putrid performances by the incumbents, why are we so against giving kids a go after such horrible games.

not against giving kids a go but what sort of culture is being fostered if the kids you want to promote may be softer than the players your complaining about.

Think about it. If a player is struggling to impact or underperforming at VFL level why would you think he will suddenly be an excellent inclusion at AFL level.

If a player is solid and doing everything the coaches ask then fair enough but he’s stinking it up in the VFL there’s no way he should play AFL.

Not sure what his tank is like but I'd almost play Balta as a big mid for periods. Not in the ruck, just get him around stoppages and a few centre bounces. We are seriously lacking big bodies around clearances.

Remember back in 2020 when we played Edwards off the HBF while Houli was injured and he killed it? Probably the last time he played at a consistently high level....two years older now of course -which is ten in football years after 30- but perhaps worth revisiting.... :shh

I maybe wrong but the reports about Dow, Miller and Rioli Jnr were positive and it appears that Stack showed something in the second half. Rioli would address the lack of pressure in the forwardline and bringing in Miller would allow Balta to play up forward. Bringing in Dow may assist with winning clearances. The enormous problem we have is the gulf in experience between our ageing midfield and those who are meant to replace them. As great a player as Dustin is we cannot expect him to carry the team.

McIntosh will train this week and aim to put his hand up to return for the game at the MCG, while Vlastuin is understood to still be a fortnight away from being available for selection.

Team Tips:

Damien Hardwick will be forced to make at least one change to his line up, potentially two, depending on how quickly Jack Riewoldt recovers from thumb surgery. With a 10-day turnaround between games, Riewoldt is in a race to prove his fitness. Dion Prestia is a definite out after scans confirmed his hamstring injury.

Kamdyn McIntosh (calf) should be fit to replace Prestia, although Nick Vlastuin (hamstring) is unlikely to be ready just yet. Matt Parker could be the man to provide some forward line support if Riewoldt doesn’t get up, while Thomson Dow — who had an excellent pre-season —and Riley Collier-Dawkins will also be pushing for selection if the Tigers opt to make any further changes.

Why we have Stack played his best footy there imo, Mansell Banks, Brown with talk of Ralphsmith for the role as well.

Playing Edwards in the back half would just make the problem bigger of getting games into kids in the rightful roles. Fmd Rioli is coasting a kid along with short.

Maybe its as simple as saying Edwards at 33  is past it and its time to play a kid in his place despite the possibilty of a real good game here or there.
