King and Higgins busy tonight but I reckon they'll have a harder time of it next week against our backline personally.

I reckon Broad to Membrey, Tarrant or Miller to King, Grimes and Gibcus floating around to intercept.

Ryder likely to play for the Saints.

At least this time we'll have two genuine rucks to match them rather than sending Samson Ryan to the wolves.

Damian Barrett is back on our bandwagon this week.

IF ...
the ins are Grimes, Riewoldt and Maurice Rioli ...

THEN ...
that's a trio of famous Tigers names. Got their mojo back last week against GWS, the Tigers, and still backing them in 2022 to be back where they're most comfortable – at the pointy end of the ladder.

Tigers making King plans

Damien Hardwick confident Richmond can handle the threat posed by in-form Saint Max King

By AAP
1 April 2022

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says the threat posed by St Kilda spearhead Max King won't sway him from using swingman Noah Balta at the opposite end of the ground in their AFL clash.

Premiership defender Balta has impressed in attack this season, kicking six goals across the opening two rounds.

He combined well with Tom Lynch against GWS last week in the absence of veteran forward Jack Riewoldt, who has been named to return from a thumb injury against the Saints at the MCG on Sunday.

"We know what we've got with Noah down back but we wanted to see what he could be and we've really enjoyed what he's brought," Hardwick said.

"He's a powerful man, a great contested mark and he's a great kick at goal as well.

"At this stage we'll settle him down up forward for this week but that's not to say that in the upcoming weeks he won't swing down back at various stages."

King's dominant third-quarter showing against Fremantle last week was crucial in St Kilda claiming their first win of the season.

The 21-year-old, now in his third full season after injuries ruined his rookie year, booted four goals in a performance that made the rest of the competition take notice.

Balta is arguably the Tigers' best physical match-up for King but Hardwick will try his other options first.

"He's an incredible talent, Max. He's getting better and better every year we see him play," Hardwick said.

"But we're really confident with Robbie (Tarrant), Josh Gibcus and Dylan Grimes ... that one of those players will be able to fill the role and negate him as best they can.

"He's going to take some marks, he's going to kick some goals - that's what the very best players do.

"We've got to make sure we manage that as best we can and keep it to a relatively low total."

Riewoldt and Grimes, who missed last week because of soreness, both took part in the Tigers' light training session at Punt Road on Friday.

THE CERTAINTIES FOR ST KILDA V RICHMOND

Andrew Slevison
SEN
1 April 2022

Crouch to have 25 or more disposals

You can almost set your watch to a midfielder with contested ability getting 25 or more touches against the Tigers.

Brad Crouch found the ball 29 times in last weekend’s win over Fremantle after 27 in Round 1 and is expected to continue on his merry way.

He has averaged 29 disposals in his last six against Richmond, including when he was at Adelaide, so 25 seems extremely accessible.

Edwards to pick up 15+ touches

Shane Edwards has been busy against St Kilda in recent years.

In his last 10 outings he has averaged 19.5 touches, dropping under 15 just once in that time.

Although he’s started the season with tallies of 14 and 17, you can expect he will have more of an impact against the Saints in his forward-midfield role.

Edwards has also kicked at least a goal in five of his last six against the Saints so you can throw in a major for good measure.

AFL's Tigers wary of Saints' talls trio

Anna Harrington
Victor Harbour Times
2 April 2022

Richmond will take on the daunting task of facing St Kilda's three dynamic talls, Paddy Ryder, Rowan Marshall and Jack Hayes, with a view to exploiting them.

The Saints opted to keep both Marshall and Hayes in their 22 alongside the returning Ryder for Sunday's AFL clash at Marvel Stadium.

Former SANFL star Hayes, 25, has proved a revelation since signing in the supplemental selection period, with Richmond coach Damien Hardwick wary of all three St Kilda talls but hinting at a counter.

"Everything's exploitable, it depends on the way the game pans out," Hardwick said.

"St Kilda play a certain style of game but Paddy Ryder's such an important player to the way they play. I think they play their best footy when he's in the side, and they've certainly found one in Hayes also.

"... What I do know is all those players are very, very capable.

"Marshall's one of the best young ruckmen going around and Ryder, although experienced, has certainly got a spring in his step as well when he's playing his best footy.

"How they line up I'm not too sure but I certainly know we'll have our hands full at various stages."

As with all games now thanks to the new rules it's whoever wins the contested footy and clearances in the midfield wins. Focus on Nank & Soldo vs Marshall & Ryder in the ruck. We need to bring the same intensity with and without the footy as last week.

Need to watch Butler and Higgins too only because they pump themselves up when they play us. So important we apply pressure upfield so both of them and Max King don't get fed easy deliveries.
