Dimma post-game was asked about our discipline (or lack of) and the frees we gave away in particular downfield Pickett's 50m penalty.

‘That hurts’: Tigers coach tells players to ‘get better’ after ‘costly’ frees rear head again

A frustrated Damien Hardwick has implored his side to be more disciplined after several ill-disciplined free kicks cost Richmond in its 33-point loss to St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

The Tigers held a 25-point lead at one stage during the third quarter, but collapsed for the remainder of the match and were powerless to stop a run of Saints scoring that got out to 64-0 before a late goal to Shai Bolton.

One of those free kicks was a 50 metre penalty against Marlion Pickett for an off-the-ball shove on Dan Butler, which brought Ben Long from 50 metres out to the top of the goalsquare and brought the Saints within five points on the fringes of three-quarter time.

Another costly free kick came earlier in the match when Shai Bolton ran into an open goal only to have his goal disallowed due to a free kick at the other end of the ground.

The Tigers lost the free kick count on Sunday 19-27 and in their other loss, in round one to Carlton, lost the count 20-28.

Speaking to reporters post-game, Hardwick admitted some of his players’ errors continued to frustrate him.

“It’s disappointing and the cheapness of some of the free kicks, like just discipline and too high,” he said.

“Stoppage free kicks hurt us once again. We’ve got to get better. We’ve spoken about that all year, about trying to eradicate that from our game but it creeps in at critical stages and it’s really really costly.

“You can’t defend from a free kick, you can’t put pressure on and they get a free disposal. We’ve got to get better on that front.”

Asked what more he could do having already tried to rectify the issue, Hardwick said the onus was on his players to be better.

“At the end of the day, I can sit there and talk about it as much as you want but the players have got to sit there and be accountable for their actions like everyone else is,” he said.

“There are some that are 50-50s but others there’s just poor technique or we give away a downfield free kick or the ill-discipled one like the Marlion one, which is disappointing.

“The guy is having a shot from 50 and all of a sudden he’s going from the goalsquare. That hurts.”

Three months later and ill-discipline is still an issue.

Matty Lloyd went through last quarter examples of it and also said we've given away 36 fifth metre penalties this year. The next worst is West Coast with 22.

"How many times have we seen Jack Riewoldt sook at quarter breaks about not getting a free kick?"

Kane Cornes takes aim at the Tigers' lack of discipline, which again proved costly in their two-point loss to the Suns.

‘This is rubbish’: Tigers star Jason Castagna slammed over smother

AFL greats have suggested the Richmond Tigers will need a reset after a scathing swipe at the club’s horrific implosion over the weekend.

Former Port Adelaide 300-gamer Kane Cornes has blasted Richmond’s discipline after the shock loss to the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday.

Perhaps the most egregious moment came when 26-year-old forward Jason Castagna botched a goal with one defender in front of him.

Streaming into the 50 with Noah Cumberland in support, Castagna ran to just shy of the goalsquare before booting it — right at Charlie Ballard who flew across to save the goal.

But while the Suns enjoy the victory, Cornes has blasted Castagna for butchering the goal by not kicking earlier.

“This is rubbish from Castagna — either kick the goal or handball it,” Cornes said on Channel 9’s Footy Classified. “Either kick the goal prior to that, he’s lairising around goal and his set shot routine has become a bit of a meme. It’s a bit embarrassing how he goes about it.”

With just under four minutes to go and a nine-point lead, Jack Riewoldt went for a specky but landed heavily before appealing for a free kick.

Cornes blasted that moment as well.

“Look at the score, the lead with four minutes to go,” he said. “That’s rubbish from an experienced player who sooks to the umpire he should have got the free kick.

“How many times have we seen Jack Riewoldt sook at quarter time about not getting the free kick? So you wonder if the winning has papered over the cracks.”

Cornes then showed a graphic which had the Tigers last in free kicks against, 50m penalties and goals from 50m penalties in the AFL.

“That’s damning on Damien Hardwick,” Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd said.

“The worst for free kicks against and the best Bulldogs. The worst for 50m penalties and worst for goals from 50m penalties.

“You’re not going to ever finish up top one or two in that situation. He’s spoken about it before but nothing ever changes.”

Interestingly, the Tigers have been in the bottom half of the competition in free kicks against every season since 2013 and this is the fifth season Tigers given away the most free kicks. This includes 2017 and 2020, two of the three seasons the club won the flag. In 2019, the Tigers were the third worst team.

The Age’s Sam McClure said it was surprising the team being discussed was Richmond considering Damien Hardwick “is usually the guy that turns that stuff around”.

But Cornes argued that there had been “significant off field issues … over a number of years”, including during the 2020 biosecure bubble.

He continued to say it was a big moment for the Tigers as several older players appear to be heading for the door.

Earlier in the segment, Lloyd suggested Jack Riewoldt, Trent Cotchin and Shane Edwards won’t renew their contracts, with Cornes adding the trio may be joined in an exodus.

“I reckon they’re a big story if players like (Liam) Baker leave at the age of 24 and what happens with Dustin Martin, the three players Llordo mentioned and the players they have significantly injured like (Kane) Lambert,” he said.

“It’s a pivotal moment for the Tigers how they reset with the group and what they do at the end of the year.”

First half was disgraceful as far as our discipline or lack of it. We came into game having learnt nothing. Disrespected the opposition once again and rightly got bitten on the backside by it once again.

Hmm funny only now they talk about the differentials. they paint a picture of ill discipline yet never a mention of the umpires and just how poor they have been.

Yes we have been ill disciplined on occasions most games, but sheesh id love a dollar for every free kick we have not got that the opposition have or a dollar for every single soft 50/50 kick the opposition get that we dont. Look at Nankervis gets reported spuriously yep its a free that isnt  and the next two times he goes near the ball he is pinged for what can only be described as at best as soft.

FMD the numbers say too things not one. Yes there has been an element of ill discipline but they also tell us we are on the recieving end of poor umpiring you only have to review each decision for yourself and also look at what is not paid we do get a rough deal and this is such biased and unprofessional reporting as you will find but it comes as no surprise the media today is a different beast to what it was years ago.

This is something imo that just cannot be allowed to carry on time for the club to get some cahoonas and shove the onus back on the AFL and its media cronies.

Round 1 Vs Carlton saw us cop 8x50mtr penalties, the majority of which were deemed to be incorrect!  Give us back those 8 & we are still on the top of the 50mtr penalty against table with daylight behind us!  Also last on the frees for table & top of the frees against table!
Not all of that is about our attitude or ill-discipline, there are other attitudes at play here too.
When umpires carry a notion over from previous incidents (& even from previous games) that player X (Nank) should be penalized on numerous occasions for one certain act then the word 'unbiased' has lost its meaning!  Marlion says hi here too  ...
Umpires shouldn't carry agendas into a game or be given special case sensitive instructions, nor should they be instruments of revenge or retribution.  They should be unbiased & fair.
Ginnivan at Collingwood can't get a free for a high tackle now but the media are instantly all over it!  Several articles have been written claiming that Ginnivan is being unfairly umpired - what about Nankervis then?  How about sticking up for Marlion too?
Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!  Loud, proud & dangerous!

There immune to criticism the umpires we have copped so many bad decisions and without a explanation from the afl I can't understand nothing more to describe it corrupt.

It's a gravy train at the top. Kane Cornes is the faux voice of dissent and 'shock' opinion and that's about it. All the rest realize they're onto a good thing and just toe the line. There's so much TV money to be made and all the little fox piggies get their share for their little greedy snouts. Authentic opinions or everyday opinions about footy just get in the way of the flow of cash from TV and marketing. Keep your damn mouth shut and earn plenty in the process! That's the role the media plays now.

Hell, I bet they keep Mark Robinson around to make it look like the only person with unsociable opinions about the governance of the game are bedraggled drunks. (He wouldn't realize this of course, on account of the fact he is a bedraggled drunk.)

"There's your dissenting opinion, watching public! Do you want to be a drunk like Robbo or a hip, well-dressed successful male like Nick Riewoldt, 'Jono' Brown and Nathan Buckley?"
