Lynch to miss clash against Power

Jon Pierik
The Age
6 June 2022

Star forward Tom Lynch remains sidelined for another week, but Richmond are hopeful three other premiership stars return for Thursday night’s clash against fellow finals contender Port Adelaide at the MCG.

Lynch (hamstring) is expected to be back to face Carlton in a fortnight, having endured a strain in the same spot as he had through the pre-season, but Noah Balta (hamstring), Kane Lambert (hip) and Marlion Pickett (migraine and suspension) are under consideration to face the Power.

Lynch, the Tigers’ leading goal-kicker, and Lambert were casualties against Essendon in round 10, and will have had almost three weeks to heal come the Power clash, while Balta and Pickett have not played since the win over Hawthorn in round nine.

Refreshed after a mid-season bye, coach Damien Hardwick said on Monday the Tigers had reinforcements in mind after a stinging loss to the Swans, having led by five goals.

“Balta will train and hopefully play, Kane will hopefully train and play, and Lynchy will be next week,” Hardwick said.

“Marlion will be available to play. He has played one game in four weeks. Unfortunately, he has had those migraines, the suspension and the bye. We will see how he trains. He hasn’t trained a lot, he hasn’t played a lot.”

AFL: Richmond swingman Noah Balta set to fill Tom Lynch void in Tigers’ forward line

NCA NewsWire

Noah Balta will likely fill Richmond’s Tom Lynch-sized void in attack in his expected return from injury against “rampaging” Port Adelaide on Thursday night.

The 194cm swingman has oscillated all season long, even playing as a back-up ruckman at times, but he was preparing to settle in defence before his and Lynch’s respective hamstring setbacks.

Balta’s missed the Tigers’ past two matches, then had the mid-season bye to recover further, but Lynch will sit out one more game, given the injury is to the same leg as the one he sustained in the pre-season.

Coach Damien Hardwick conceded on Monday the Tigers went in too short in attack last start against Sydney, leaving too much for veteran forward Jack Riewoldt to do.

The dilemma for Richmond is that Port Adelaide has an army of tall forwards, with Ken Hinkley previously indicating he was willing to play all of Charlie Dixon, Todd Marshall, Jeremy Finlayson and Mitch Georgiades.

“We’re happy with how the backs have been performing down there and Noah’s coming back in, but he’s got the capacity to play forward,” Hardwick said.

“The good thing about it is he adds a level of flexibility – he can play forward and back and ruck – so we’ll see how that pans out (on Monday) afternoon.”

In: Balta, Pickett, Lambert (if fit)

Out: Castagna, Ross, Cumberland (not used sub).

Gibcus moved forward so we structure up with two actual & mobile tall forwards.

B:    Grimes        Tarrant       Vlastuin

HB:   D.Rioli         Balta          Baker

C:     Pickett         Short        McIntosh

HF:   Edwards       Gibcus        Bolton

F:     Martin         Riewoldt       M.Rioli

R:   Nankervis      Prestia         Cotchin

Int:  Soldo     Broad    Graham      Lambert

Sub: Ralphsmith

I dont mind it but if its peeing down with rain id take out soldo and play Ralphy instead.

From last week's side, Castagna, M.Rioli and Ross have been named in our VFL team.

Parker not playing ressies. Injured or being promoted?

In the Mix: Round 13

Kane Lambert (hip), Noah Balta (hamstring) and Marlion Pickett (migraine) should all be available for selection after missing the Tigers' loss to Sydney before the bye. Robbie Tarrant could be the one to make way for Balta, while Jack Ross may be forced out by Lambert. Coach Damien Hardwick flagged Pickett had missed a bit of footy recently, and replacement winger Hugo Ralphsmith was fairly impressive against the Swans.

Verdict: Lambert and Balta in for Ross, Tarrant and sub Cumberland.

Team Tips:

Richmond could welcome back three premiership stars this week, with Noah Balta (hamstring), Kane Lambert (hip) and Marlion Pickett (illness)all likely to return, coach Damien Hardwick confirmed. Balta and Lambert are considered near certainties to play, while Pickett’s arability is less certain after an injury-disrupted past month. Last week’s bye came at a good time for the Tigers in that sense with basically a full-strength team at their disposal now other than Tom Lynch (hamstring), who’s likely still another week away. Hugo Ralphsmith, who was a late in for Pickett against the Swans, likely makes way, while Jack Ross, Maurice Rioli and Jason Castagna could be the other unlucky ones to miss out.

He apparently got nosed out of getting a $20k quaddie on the weekend.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

You could get your wish Ramps. 13 degrees and wet tomorrow while Dimma spoke about Balta playing forward and whether we use him as the second ruck.

If that's the case and Juddy Clarke comes in for say Maurice (I hope junior stays in though) who has been named in the ressies team.
