My read on Bauer is that he's not big enough to make it as a key forward/defender at AFL level, so he's caught between KP and being a flanker and a wingman but isn't quick or clever enough for that either. At least that's what our hierarchy believes.

After a performance like that, if he's not picked next week then you'd have to think he's never going to get a shot. But I wouldn't be picking him as the second tall, more as a third tall cum swing defender.

Reckon he has the height at 192cm to play kpp or third tall he only needs to bulk up to  have the attributes to play kp.

Jack Riewoldt ring a bell. Just 193cm and 92kg plays kp pretty well.

Jack Gunston at just 193cm and 87 kg was a perfect foil for Franklin and Roughead.
The fella at Adelaide Fogarty just 193cm tracking along nicely id say plays kp because he has the bulk and strength that enables him to play kp. Treacy, Van Rooyen, Ash Jonson all 193 and looking good.
While on Collingwood Mihocek 192cm. Curnow the coleman medalist 192cm,
There is plenty Darling held down kpf for wce at just 191cm.Georgiades at Port just 191cm but a real areal threat maybe not kpp size but he still offers genuine height and that areial presence that tall fwds have to have.

I think what gets lost here we largely have just JR and Lynchy then its a plethora of small fwds with no genuine fwd around the 188 - 192 range.
Have complained for years about the lack of medium fwds or for that matter medium players. We have relied on Dusty to play fwd primarily a mid to get a real point of difference between the KPF'S and small fwds.

Bauer to me should be developed as a third tall a lot like Gunston and if he bulks up and gets the power and strength to play kp then so be it. He is currently good or strong enough in the air to warrant a tall player to play on him. If he is to be a defender then we need look no further than Grimes to see what type he could be and thats much more than just  a hb or wing.

As a defender Grimes is not big 193/90 0dd kg, Broad 192/90 odd.  both imo are not kpp,s but no one is saying they are inbetweeners
and are only good for wing or hb. They when needed play on all types and its their height that allows them to do this.

Any way enough from me just have to say though if the club have him pencilled in as you say then they are wrong imo.

Atm with no Lynch, Bauer and  Riewoldt with RUCK/FWD  Ryan look to be an ideal sort of set up imo.
Its been my opinion all year that Miller should be playing kpd instead of Young.

Bauer's roughly the same size Riewoldt was but looks more agile, versatile(plays both ends) and maybe a yard quicker -(not saying he'll ever reach Jack's level though.) :shh

Jack is taller than cousin Nick, and much heaver than Bauer (at this stage). But that's a long way from my point, which is that my read is that our hierarchy believe he isn't tall or heavy enough to play KPF at AFL level, so that's why he's been moved down back to see how he goes. There is a world of difference to playing on VFL defenders when you step up to AFL standard. In fact I reckon that os the hardest jump to make as a prospective AFL player.

I see most agree with me, that he should be picked as a 3rd tall. We don't have a good option like that, and he might succeed in that role. I just wouldn't be picking him as an alternative to Lynch or Riewoldt or a ruckman.

Jack is almost the identical size as his cousin which surprises me i always thought Nick to be bigger. But thats neither here nor there one ot two kg or one or two cm its irrelevant.

Its about where they may get to and Jack at the start of his career was listed at 192 and 86kg Jacob Bauer is currently listed at 192 and 85kg.

Who really cares if Bauer never becomes a KPF, regardless he remains a genuine tall player who is strong in the air. If he ends up playing kPP that would be great but if he ends up as a  good third tall type like say Gunston then id say everyone would be as pleased as punch.
For the club to not play this kid because they think him an in betweener then they are wrong imo.

The goal should be to play him alongside both Lynch and Riewoldt as that genuine third tall threat in the air just like a lot of clubs do with similar types. He is quick and agile enough to not be a liability as far as defense goes. The bottom line is if he was at another club and played against us his logical opponent would be Grimes.

Jacob Bauer to debut this week (RFC)

Bauer debuting this week.

https://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/1371782/

Bauer was the hero for Richmond’s VFL team for the second time in a month last Friday, kicking the match-winning goal after the siren.

After dominating in defence for the majority of the match, Bauer was moved forward in the final quarter. From there, he kicked three final-term goals from the 18-minute mark onwards to secure the Tigers' win.

The swingman was best on ground, collecting 21 disposals, 11 marks and a game-high three goals.

Bauer, former Sydney Swans Academy player arrived at Tigerland in the 2022 Mid-Season Rookie Draft via SANFL club North Adelaide, taken with pick 10.

The talented 21-year-old booted 16 goals in nine VFL matches last year and has impressed at both ends of the ground this year with his strong aerial ability.

Personally I don't think he deserves it yet

long injury layoff, first couple of games back were underwhelming and 2 reasonable ones in the last couple off weeks

Needs to earn it IMHO and he hasn't yet

McQualter wouldn't say tonight which end of the ground Bauer is playing on Thursday night. We've got match committee on Wednesday. Mini just said Bauer is flexible to play either key forward or key defence.
