Steven May won't play in Melbourne's crucial Queen's Birthday clash with Collingwood after the star defender was banned for one game by the club after an alcohol-fuelled fight with teammate Jake Melksham.

May, who was due to return against the Magpies after sustaining a concussion in the Demons' round 11 loss to Fremantle, became involved in an altercation with Melksham about 9pm on Sunday night after dinner with several teammates.

He and Melksham told the club of the incident afterwards, and expressed their remorse.

Club statement:

From GM of Football Alan Richardson:

“Following a dinner on Sunday evening, Jake and Steven informed us of a scuffle that took place after a lighthearted disagreement between the pair escalated.”

“Both Jake and Steven had been drinking at dinner and are incredibly remorseful that things played out the way they did.

“Given Steven is still under the AFL concussion protocols from Round 11, he was aware that under club guidelines he should not have been drinking.

“The leadership group has recommended to impose a one-match ban on Steven, a decision which has been endorsed by the club’s broader leadership. This will make him unavailable for both AFL and VFL selection.

“Steven and Jake will also complete community service through one of the club’s community partners to ensure they understand the responsibility and impact they have as role models within the community.

“Over the past three years, Steven has developed into one of our most important on-field leaders, and while the impact of not having him available for selection is significant, what is more significant to us is our culture and the commitment we have to live by our values.

“Steven is extremely remorseful and accepts his actions were completely out of step with the expectations the club and his teammates have of him. He accepts the sanction handed down and makes no excuse for his poor judgement.

“We are proud of the culture we have built over the past few years and while we are disappointed with Steven’s behaviour, we back in his character and will support him to ensure he is armed to make better decisions for himself and the football club moving forward.”

Funny how there's no mention in the media of "turbulence" at Melbourne over this. Nor is it a "sign of arrogance" or that "the AFL will be happy to see them fail"  ::). Imagine the hoo-haa if this was us.

Melksham has had surgery on an hand infection that resulted from his alcohol-fuelled fight with teammate Steven May, ruling him out of all football this weekend.

Yep, no mention of hubris at all

Also, consider this (not mine BTW)

Hunter - serious incident with booze during covid - slap on wrist
Sidebottom - serious incident with booze during covid - slap on wrist
Stack and CCJ -serious incident with booze during covid - came down like a tonne of bricks - league intervened
Bolton and Rioli - fight at a bar - tonne of bricks - league intervened.
May and Melksham - fight at a bar - slap on wrist - did the league even get involved?

Dunno if its persecution for being a Richmond player or being black.

I will confess I'm enjoying this implosion

Said they had become arrogant and they are reaping the rewards  :rollin

Yep, I go through all of those thoughts every time anything happens that involves Richmond.  We always get made 'an example of' while other clubs with exactly the same problems get the 'kid gloves' routine.
I'm just glad not to be the only one thinking it ...

Fox Footy’s Mark Robinson says the altercation between the duo was not just a “scuffle” as initially explained by the club, but rather a “fight” witnessed by at least five other teammates.

“It’s a brawl, it’s a fight where players and teammates have got in,” he said.

“I think Melbourne supporters have every right to think they’ve underplayed this.

“So (Melksham’s) punched someone in the mouth and (May’s) tooth has opened up his hand. It’s not ideal.

“Basically Jake Melksham assaulted Steven May. He punched him in the face.

“If they weren’t teammates, the police would investigate and say ‘that’s assault’.

“Should the AFL integrity look at it? Maybe.

“Community service shouldn’t be a penalty – that should be part of what you do as an AFL player.

“Maybe the AFL didn’t step in strong enough on this.”

Apparently the restaurant has come out (on social media?) and said it was a fight. Wonder if they have security footage 🤔🤔

What the AFL should be investigating is why the game is stuffed in the head
