Age no barrier to Richo contract
25 May 2006   Herald Sun
Mark Robinson

RICHMOND and Matthew Richardson will buck the trend for footballers aged more than 30 by announcing a two-year contract extension as early as the weekend.

The 31-year-old, now in his 14th year at Richmond, is estimated to earn between $400,000 and $500,000 per year.

It's well down on his glory-day package, when he earned close to $700,000 a season, but with the injured Nathan Brown, it ranks him among the highest-paid at Punt Rd.

The two-year deal is in contrast to Hawthorn, which signed 31-year-old Shane Crawford for 12 months and has offered 32-year-old
Peter Everitt the same time frame.

Everitt wants two years and speculation has it that if he doesn't receive it he will shop himself at the end of the season.

The Tigers, however, do not have an issue with a multi-year deal for Richardson, who many believe to be still the club's most valuable player.

Football director Greg Miller last night said the club had "no qualms" about the length of the extension.

Richardson's manager Ricky Nixon yesterday confirmed closure was near.

"We've put an offer to the club, we're not poles apart and we hope to get a deal done in the foreseeable future," Nixon said.

He also agreed that players such as Richardson -- 30-plus, key position, athletic -- deserved multi-years.

"I can understand that rationale (Hawthorn's) but players of the ilk of Max Hudghton or Matthew Richardson, they have something going for them," Nixon said.

"They don't get injured and they haven't lost their pace, they play at different ends of ground and they are both playing good football well into their 30s.

"I'm pretty confident he can play until he's 35."

Richardson has played 224 games and leads the Tigers this year in marks (61) and goals (16).

The two-time All-Australian played every game last year and kicked 65 goals to be third on the club's all-time goalkicking list, behind Kevin Bartlett and Jack Titus.

The Tigers, meanwhile, are down the track on a new two-year deal for dual best-and-fairest Joel Bowden.

Well done and congrats to Richo  :clapping. 2 years seems fair to me given his good form and age. If he can stay mostly injury free touchwood that would take him close to 280 games by the end of the new contract. If his body and pace are still alright by then then one more year would enable him to crack the 300.

New deals for Bowden, Richo

Two of Richmond's favourite sons - spearhead Matthew Richardson and full-back Joel Bowden - have agreed to new two years deals at Punt Road.

The deals were announced on Tuesday tying both players - the club's co-deputy-vice-captains - to the club until the end of 2008.

Richardson told a joint media conference at Punt Road that he was not looking any further ahead than the next two years.

"Apart from my wrist, the body feels good. We'll get through this two years but with the young side that we've got, I'd certainly like to play as long as I can as long as I'm contributing," Richardson said.

"I think there's a bright future with the amount of young players that have been coming on in the last eight to nine weeks. It's the most promising since I've been at the club. I'd think you'd say there's some exciting times coming up in the next few years."

"Once you get to the age of 31, I'm happy that the club has offered me a two year contract and hopefully I can play good footy in the next two years. It doesn't feel weird. Once you get to this age, you've got to realise it's got to end at some point."

Both players will now be given the opportunity to continue to lead the Tigers' re-building process under coach, Terry Wallace - which has gained momentum in recent weeks with five wins in the past six matches to leave the club on the brink of the top eight.

And it will give both a chance to push beyond the 250 game milestone at a club where their fathers both played in a premiership team.

Richardson, 31, has played 225 games for the Tigers and will be 33 by the time his new deal expires.

However he has played some of his best football in his long career in recent times and last year took the most contested marks in the AFL and the fifth-most marks overall in again topping the Tigers' goalkicking list with 65 goals.

It was the 10th time in the past 12 years he has been the Tigers' leading goalkicker and it was also the fourth time he has finished runner-up in the club's best and fairest having also done so in 1996, 1999 and 2002.

Richardson is again on target to be the Tigers' leading goalkicker this year, although he will miss at least the club's next two matches with a fractured wrist, and his career tally of 662 goals puts him third on the club's all-time list behind Jack Titus (970 goals) and Kevin Bartlett (778 goals).

Bowden, who turns 28 next month, has won the Tigers' past two best and fairest awards and has enjoyed a magnificent start to this season.

"This is where I want to finish my days as a player, a one-club Richmond player. So I'm very happy and honored," Bowden told the media conference.

"I'm very happy, the team's progressing I think. We've improved after the last few weeks after coming off a big loss to Sydney. We've learnt a lot from that game and we've shown in the last couple of weeks that we're a group that does listen and has learnt.

"Hopefully, because we've got such a young group, they can improve rapidly so that Matthew and I can enjoy the talent and expertise that Terry's given the young guys and we can enjoy a bit of success," he said.

Bowden brought up his 200th game during the shock win over Adelaide and has been one of the AFL's most durable players, rarely missing a game since debuting in 1996.

The re-signing of the pair also continues a long family tradition for both at Punt Road with Richardson's father Alan having been a member of the club's 1967 premiership team while Bowden's father Michael played in the Tigers' 1969 premiership win.

Richo sticks with 'exciting' Tigers (The Australian)

Richo sticks with 'exciting' Tigers
The Australian
May 31, 2006

VETERAN Richmond forward Matthew Richardson has signed on until 2008, but is keen to play on beyond
that time because he believes the club is finally on the verge of success.

Defender and two-time club champion Joel Bowden also signed a new deal yesterday which will keep him with the Tigers for another two seasons.

Since Richardson, 31, was drafted in 1992, the Tigers have played in only two finals series - in 1995 and 2001.

He missed the 1995 finals series with a knee injury, meaning his 225 games have included only three finals matches, all in 2001.

Bowden, 27, who made his debut in 1996, has also played in just the three 2001 finals in his 201 games.

But Richardson said the large group of youngsters who had helped the Tigers to win five of their past six matches, had convinced him the club was about to enter a brighter era.

"I think it's definitely the most promising since I've been at the club," Richardson said.

"Richard Tambling's really starting to play some good footy now, (and) obviously Brett Deledio, Dean Polo's come in and just been a revelation, Danny Meyer played well on the weekend and Adam Pattison's done well the past two weeks.

"I think you'd say there's some exciting times coming up in the next few years."

Those five players were recruited in the 2004 national draft, while Richmond's top two picks from the 2005 draft - Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Cleve Hughes - also made their debut this season.

Bowden expressed similar positive sentiments to Richardson.

"We've got such a young group coming through. Hopefully they learn rapidly and Matthew and I can both enjoy the talent and expertise that (coach Terry Wallace) is giving these young guys, so we can enjoy a little bit of success," Bowden said.

Wallace conceded the absence of Richardson - who has been the club's leading goal-kicker for 10 seasons - would leave a hole that was impossible to fill.

Wallace also revealed he is considering using star forward Nathan Brown in two or three-game stints for the rest of the season.

Brown, who has not played since round three because of soreness in the leg he broke in round 10 last season, could resume against Fremantle at Subiaco on Saturday night.

If not, he is expected to play against the Kangaroos in the following round.
