Expert verdict: Who your club should take in this year’s draft

As the AFL world closes in on the 2022 National Draft, Fox Footy expert Mick Ablett has had his say on who your club should be targeting to bolster their stocks in 2023 and beyond.

RICHMOND

Picks: 53, 63

Mick Ablett says:
With the additions of former Giants star midfielders Jacob Hopper and Tim Taranto, the Tigers are on their way to returning as genuine Premiership contenders. Now there is simply a need for speed. While Shai Bolton and Maurice Rioli tick these boxes, further outside leg speed would greatly assist. Could the Tigers find a mature age recruit like Isaac Smith was to give them the edge?

Draft Prediction:
While the Tigers won’t get their chance until late in the piece, there will still be talent on the board. Should a player like Swan Districts small forward Darcy Jones slip through, he would be an ideal candidate. Jones won the agility test at the draft time in 7.70sec to show just how elusive he is. Powerful defender James Van Es is also a watch.

These are my final rankings for the 2022 crop. I've separated them into tiers and offered a general comment of how I view each group. The tier descriptions are not a perfect formula, but I'm hoping it offers a bit of an explanation as to why some players sit higher/lower than others.

Tier 1
I'm selecting any of these guys if possible, regardless of list needs/fit. I obviously rate their talent but also see significant upside. I think there's scope for each of these players to be a number 1 or number 2 midfielder in a strong AFL side.

Tier 2
There's a little bit more fluidity for me within each tier after that top group. I'd be prepared to overlook Cadman or any of the midfielders for a KPD if it made most sense from a list need perspective. I view the ceiling of this group a shade below that of Tier 1 and probably see more things that could prevent them from reaching their ceiling than any of the prospects in that top group.

Tier 3B
Lemmey gets his own category because his ceiling fits into 3A, but I think his floor is lower than 3C. However, in isolation, I'd be prepared to take Lemmey over any of the guys in 3C.

I think the floor for these guys is fringe best 22, with a ceiling of 10-22 on a list. Essentially, I see a small gap between the best and worst case scenario for their careers, but have a fairly high level of confidence that they'll have a career at AFL level.

Tier 4
One of my bigger groups, Tier 4 represents players who have the largest gap between ceiling and floor. My view is that the players in this group could legitimately represent top 10 on a list value or could be in and out of the system relatively quickly. I think it's highly likely that some of the guys in this group hit in a big way. Fit/role/opportunity will be critical for their development and ultimate success at the level.

It's great having no interest in the draft this year. Last year it consumed me leading up to it.

Here’s a 2022 top 40 power ranking list, same contextual point as last time. One thing I would say about this draft is there’s great depth in terms of upside later on that’s being underrated largely. Can think of a few players who could turn out to be top-10 worthy in the future.



Then you’ve got guys like D’Aloia and Rowston who are prolific and should be solid role players. Michalanney will play plenty at Adelaide. Tom Scully could be anything, as could Van Es.

A couple of guys who might be taken super late, rookie or even go undrafted but have upside that could be moulded into longer AFL careers with talent are Lloyd Johnston, Josh Bennetts, Harvey Gallagher, Kyle Marshall and Ziggy Toledo. Knobel is a good size for a ruck.

Final point would be to highlight both Sam Gilbey and Jayden Davey. Both have great talent and have top-25 upside for whoever would take the risk. Injuries create a big question mark, but they deserve opportunities. Could be steals if they slide.

No idea myself TK but going by the various mock drafts there's definitely a chance (Lemmey more so than Keeler it seems). However, a few of the mock drafts also have both gone before our first pick.

In any case, hopefully all the NGAs and F/S in this draft push us up the draft order.

There will be a few KPF that they will look at who have ability that’s needs development, if/ whoever we get a KPF it will take a few / couple of year of development to making an impact in the seniors
MT is right, by the time the father sons and other upgrades have taken place, I’m hoping we will get a crack in the mid to late 40’s where the likes of Lemmy and Scully will possibly be available

51. Richmond - Harry Lemmey - West Adelaide (SA)

An athletic tall leading forward who displays a high work rate and was touted as a potential pick one contender coming into the season, Lemmey has struggled to live up to the expectation or take the next step in his footballing development. While he is of key position height, his style of play more closely resembles a super-tall flanker.

54. Richmond - Tom Scully - West Adelaide (SA)

A 204cm key forward who averaged 4.9 goals and 3.9 contested marks over his first eight SANFL Under-18 games, Scully was one of this year's hottest starters before a form slump in the second half of the year. Difficult to stop as a contested marking target inside 50m with his height and reach, Scully is at his best close to goal.

2022 AFL Draft Preview: Richmond

WITH season proper and trade period done and dusted, AFL fans and staff alike now turn their attention towards the draft (November 28-30). The chaos has settled on player and pick swaps, and budding prospects have completed their combines, leaving a nervous wait until they learn their fate.

In the next of our club by club previews, we take a look at the Richmond’s draft hand and offer insight into how the Tigers may utilise the picks at their possession. Having gone hard during trade period, they boast one of the thinnest draft hands but will look to extract late value.

2022 FINISH: 7th

CURRENT PICKS: 53, 62, 76, 82

FUTURE PICKS: RIC R2, RIC R3, RIC R4

ACADEMY/FATHER-SON NOMINEES: Nil.

OPTIONS:

Though its final place will fluctuate as academy and father-son bids roll in up the order, Richmond is set to enter the draft all the way back in round three. The Tigers boast four overall picks but with only 55-60 players expected to be picked up, they will likely only utilise two before upgrading Marlion Pickett to their senior list.

Having just bolstered their midfield in a big way, the Tigers could go down the key position route for some long-term cover. Though in a draft once lauded for its tall talent, there are admittedly few options who may fit the bill.

One prospect who makes sense is Will Elliott, who captained the Oakleigh Chargers but missed much of his top-age season with a knee injury. He, and fellow Charger Hudson O’Keeffe are rucks with developable traits and handy mobility. The former fits a key forward need, too.

Another Victorian ruck in Max Knobel may be in the frame as another project option, while versatile South Australian Phoenix Foster could also pique the Tigers’ interest. Along similar lines, fellow Croweaters Harry Lemmey and Tom Scully remain on the precipice of draft contention and offer potential late value as tall forwards.

Steering away from the key position realm, there are also plenty of running types set to be available. A mature-ager like Joe Richards may suit Richmond’s list profile as a small with good pace, though he has been rumoured to have suitors well up the order.

Hard-nosed midfielder-forward Archie Lovelock and outside utility Jonti Schuback loom as a couple of steals late in the piece, while crafty Tasmanian Seth Campbell could be up the Tigers’ ally. The same goes for inside ball winners like Adam D’Aloia and Hugh Bond, though the latter’s ability to double as a lockdown defender may be more appealing to Richmond’s needs.

KEY QUESTIONS:

– Will Richmond be satisfied with only using two picks in this year’s draft?
– What kind of late value can Richmond extract from its selections?
