Surely that’s a first finals appearance locked in now with the suns loss tonight. 8 points and 50% clear with 2 games left.

Pretty sure it was a lock after last night with our % being so high

I know I've banged on about it all season and even before this season started but there were no excuses in not making finals this year. With our draw, we had to make finals

Tigers claw back to win in “mature performance”

Peter Williams

RICHMOND coach Ryan Ferguson has praised his side for another “mature performance” after getting “jumped” in the opening quarter against Carlton before coming back to win, 6.8 (44) to 5.4 (34) at Ikon Park on Friday night. In another strong AFL Women’s clash, the Tigers found themselves down by 19 points at the first break, but from that point on, kicked 5.7 to the Blues’ 1.2 to run over the top of them and continue their six-game winning streak.

“It felt like it was a really good game of footy and the composure and the patience of the team… they did jump us but in saying that they had the wind and they converted really well and they just outplayed us in the first quarter,” Ferguson said. To wrestle momentum back and do it bit by bit, and to stick to task, it was another mature performance and really proud of how they handled that situation.”

Richmond is now guaranteed a finals spot, sitting to wins clear inside the top eight, with a heathy percentage of 134/9 compared to those in the bottom 10. Ferguson said matches like the tight win over Carlton helped the side further mature for “whatever” comes next.

“It’s just part of our growth in trying to become a good team and just understanding how to handle all sorts of situations, whether that be in front and challenged or behind and trying to work your way back,” he said. “The more experiences we get and if you get the good result at the end of the day it definitely adds to that belief. I know at three quarter time they were just oozing real genuine belief. They really thought they could outrun the opposition and outwork them and get the score on the board and that sets us up for whatever’s in front of us.”

When asked what the key reason behind Carlton getting on top of the Tiers early, Ferguson said the navy blue side was far better at the centre clearances – a stat the Blues won 9-2 – and they translated that into four goals with the breeze.

“I thought they were a fraction sharper and just a step ahead of us, and because they were able to dominate clearance with the wind,” he said. We started winning the ball okay but it was in the back half and probably didn’t take territory enough and overused the ball, their pressure was so hot early. I just thought it doesn’t take much, I thought they were a good team working their way into some good form. They’ve had their own challenges but I thought they were a tough team to play against tonight.”

Sarah Hosking returned to the side with captain Katie Brennan to bolster the stocks, with Hosking having 18 touches, five marks, six clearances, seven tackles and booting a goal, while Brennan kicked a major from eight disposals and four marks. On this particular night, she played the support role to Courtney Wakefield who slammed home four majors, while Ferguson praised the aerial strength of Gabrielle Seymour and Ellie McKenzie.

Another one who had a big game was former Blue, Grace Egan who racked up 18 disposals, eight tackles and two clearances, and Ferguson said the match was business as usual for ‘Greg’.

“I think she was excited to play the game but it was very low fuss,” he said. She’s one of us and obviously wants to get the win, but so do we all. We didn’t really focus on that at all to be far. We’ve never beaten Carlton, we’ve come close, but that was another good one to tick that one off off. We’re still working out way through, there’s plenty more we’d like to be able to get at, but that was a good one to get a win against the Blues who we respect.”

Richmond is now not only in a guaranteed finals spot, but still in with a chance for top four. Though their percentage is lower than their rivals, the Cats take on Adelaide next week, whilst the Pies have both North Melbourne and Brisbane in the final two rounds. Richmond faces bottom four side GWS in Round 9, before a bigger challenge against the Roos in Round 10.

“We aim for finals, we set ourselves at the start of the season. But since then we haven’t really talked about it because that’s not really how we operate,” Ferguson said. We’re going to have a really big challenge against GWS next week and that’s what we’ll focus on and just keep trying to ingrain our play and our method, and a consistent brand of footy and good things will come from that. Proud that we’re in the situation but in terms of our focus, let’s just play another good game of footy next week.”

Sarah Hosking lifting, and bringing teammates with her

Richmond has found itself going from strength to strength across its club record six-game winning streak. But on Friday night against Carlton, the side had to dig deep to get the game back on its own terms.

The first quarter of the back-and-forth tussle was entirely on the Blues’ terms. They managed to lock the ball inside 50, as the Tigers entered their opposite arc just three times.

Daniel Harford’s side was also clinical at winning the ball from the source. They were winning clearances nine to five, led by youngster Abbie McKay to see the Blues up by 19 points at the first break.

But after a slow start, experienced midfielder Sarah Hosking helped to provide the spark her teammates needed to all but lock in a first-time finals berth.

In her first game back after three weeks on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury, she came to life in the second term, having five disposals and four clearances.

Alongside Mon Conti (three clearances to half-time), Hosking helped to create opportunities for the Tigers in a game where they didn’t come easily.

The last time she played, she had a defensive role on Essendon’s Maddy Prespakis, placing a hard tag on her and restricting her to just 11 disposals.

But on Friday, she did all her work on the offensive end, including kicking a goal and generating six clearances and four inside 50s.

“She just jumped straight in and was really hard and tough,” coach Ryan Ferguson said post-game.

“Probably a bit rusty with her ball use, but got better and better as the game went on. Thought she worked through that really well.

“Sometimes you can get complacent [with having] a couple of good players back.”

This match was the first time the Tigers had beaten the Blues, in another milestone for the club.

Season seven has been one of broken records, as they now continue into the final two rounds with confidence higher than ever.

After dropping their first two matches to Adelaide and Geelong, they’ve held their nerve in down-to-the-wire games every time they’ve been faced with the challenge.

“The composure and the patience of the team… they [Carlton] did jump us, but they had the wind and converted really well,” Ferguson explained.

“To wrestle momentum back and do it bit-by-bit… it was another mature performance. Really proud of how they handled that situation.

“The more experiences you get where you get a good result at the end of the game, it just builds belief.”

Working with Conti and Grace Egan, Hosking’s drive out of the middle brought the forwards into the game, particularly in the second half.

Stella Reid took four marks, providing a handy linking option between the higher-up and deeper forwards. Emelia Yassir also added four tackles and two inside 50s.

But it was Courtney Wakefield who stole the show in front of the sticks, kicking a career-high four goals.

“She was amazing. She’s had games where… I think it was last week or the week before, she played a bit higher up the ground and gave us a real contest. Didn’t kick any goals and was huge,” Ferguson said.

“Tonight, with Katie [Brennan] back in the team, she was able to work really well and get dangerous. I’m glad for her to be able to get a little bag.”

Sitting 6-2, the Tigers have all but locked in finals. Barring a disastrous end to the season, they’ll appear post-season for the first time in the club’s history.

With two rounds left to play though, the coach says they’ll be looking at getting the results first before thinking beyond that.

“We aim for finals, we set ourselves [that goal] at the start of the season, but since then we haven’t talked about it,” Ferguson said.

“We’re going to have a really big challenge against GWS next week, and that’s what we’ll focus on. Good things will come from that.

“Proud that we’re in the situation.”

We are in 6th spot, on percentage outside the top 4, with two H/A games to go.

Brennan allows Wakefield to get off the chain

Katie Brennan might be the biggest name at the Tigers, and captain of the club, but the role she is playing when able to hit the field this season is an underrated one. Although she has only played three games this season as she manages a foot issue, Brennan forces defenders to spread their focus between both her and Courtney Wakefield and the latter took advantage of that on Friday night. Wakefield took two contested marks and kicked four goals, playing a significant role in Richmond's sixth win on the trot.
