Full article? No access.

Certainly was no point in desalination we know how that worked out but at least it's there if we need it I guess.

Not sure if we have any OERites in the effected areas but if we do please take care and stay safe

We have friends in Mooroopna who we collected their allotted 25 sandbags this morning as they were under a watch and act directive. They were planning on leaving early this afternoon.

That is the allocation to every resident. You can't have any more.

Yeah just wondering what you do with just 25.

Block the bottom of your doors?

Just doesn't seem useful.

And the dams? Apparently desal was needed but building a dam wasn’t?

Bunch of clowns truly have no idea.

It was twice they rejected it. A few years ago and whoever was in charge this decade.

I’m wondering why only 25. No money?

People got more rat tests on request  but these folk could only get 25 bags.

Laughable

There are over 50k residents in Shepparton and surrounds.

I didn't ask why only 25 bags, obviously our friends had more pressing issues to deal with

But to give out sandbags you need to be able to get sand delivered to make them and distribute.

Seeing that there other regions affected including metro Melbourne needing sand, roads were blocked all over the state I think the demand far outweighed what could be transported .. but I'll be sure to ask our friends once this is all over

And just on the desal plant. People are aware it was commissioned and built when our state water catchments were at less than 25% due to one of the worse droughts ever? We were running out of water and the need for alternative water supplies was needed. Sure new dams could have been built as some suggested but you need rain to fill dams.

And Frankie thank you for posting the link to the Age article. I read that that dam idea was also rejected in 1976, 2 years after the last big flood in Maribyrnong. The 1974 levels were almost exactly the same as this week's levels.
It was also proposed in 1986 but again nothing was done. So it would appear that multiple governments have failed.

Like I said it's still there if we need it. I was approving at the time because things were really tough. I remember having a 2min shower and still try to til this day - although my Queenslander wife is usually 10-20min it drives me crazy haha.

Hindsight being 20:20 it seems like we may never need it now.

Regardless it seems that access to clean water (bar flood emergency) isn't really a problem right now which is great.

Apparently we don’t need to build new dams. Losers.

https://amp.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics/no-point-building-new-dams-says-minister/news-story/eb672a4aa5d5ee1b9c0490e4a1fcae34
A new dam is pointless in an extreme wet event like we are going through now because we have more water than we can deal with let alone use.

A new dam is pointless in an extreme dry event because the water in it will evaporate away to low levels just like all the other existing dams.

The latter is why we have the desal plant. It's a rainfall independent water source in times of drought and especially severe drought as we went through in the mid-late 00s. There are desal plants across Australia with the Wonthaggi one in Victoria having the largest capacity.

Yesterday areas of Kensington were under metres of water while the Flemington Racecourse was kept largely dry by a flood wall, pushed through by a Labor government at the expense of the community and against the wishes of council,” Ms Sandell said.

“At the time the council said that if this flood wall was built, the water wouldn’t be able to dissipate and would be pushed towards homes, and homes would be flooded.

“This is exactly what we’ve seen. Yesterday we saw people along the Maribyrnong River lose everything. We’ve seen people lose cars, lose homes, and lose all their possessions.

“Yet the Labor government’s priority was to protect the profits of the gambling and racing industry.

On the contrary I think it's great to have a safe refuge.

Removing the wall won't save the nearby houses.

As long as everyone is safe we can rebuild houses. It's good for them to have somewhere to go in a disaster event.

So some families have lost everything because of the races? No change there then.
