Foxsports has Dimma as the 8th most coach under pressure next year.

2023 AFL coach pressure gauge

There was a suite of changes in the senior coaching ranks throughout 2022, but the situation at other clubs continues to make for fascinating viewing heading into 2023.

While plenty of players will face challenges throughout the year, no job comes with as much scrutiny as that of a senior coach.

Below, Foxfooty.com.au ranks each current head coach 1-18 on a pressure gauge.

TOP FIVE COACHES UNDER PRESSURE

Whether they’re coming out of contract or needing to lift, these coaches’ futures will at least be talked about if they start 2023 poorly.

1. Beveridge
2. Hinkley
3. Fagan
4. Nicks
5. Simpson

THE PRESSURE LIFTS...

The below coaches still have expectations to meet, but it’d be a shock if any of them left their roles for on-field reasons in 2023.

6. Longmuir
7. Dew

8. Damien Hardwick (Richmond)

It’s hard to know what Damien Hardwick has left to prove, but he seems up for the challenge and will get another huge crack at premiership glory given the additions of Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper to the side in 2023.

The Tigers have bolstered their midfield stocks which were in desperate need of just that and they look like being a formidable force next season after some very tight losses this year. Expectations should be relatively high next year given those two recruits, not to mention the prospect of a fit and refreshed Dustin Martin and a more stable back six after injuries wreaked havoc throughout this season.

Hardwick is contracted until the end of 2024, but is the longest continuous senior coach in the AFL right now. No one could begrudge him for seeking a fresh challenge. Should the Tigers miss finals in 2023 then more questions will start to be asked, so there’s some pressure on the side to perform next year. With the best 22 they have, however, finals shouldn’t be a problem.

9. Voss
10. Goodwin
11. Longmire
12. Kingsley
13. Brad Scott
14. Lyon
15. McRae
16. Mitchell
17. Clarkson
18. Chris Scott

Zerohanger website has Dimma in the top 5 coaches under the most pressure coaches in 2023.

The FIVE AFL coaches under the most pressure ahead of 2023

We’ve listed the five coaches that are sure to be under the pump next year.

It is probably the toughest gig in the business, especially when the expectations are high. Whether they are looking to go that one step further or just make their claim among the best, these coaches will be feeling the heat in 2023.

Here is our list of the five coaches under the most pressure heading into next season.

5. Damien Hardwick

'Dimma' is currently the longest-standing coach in the AFL with 12 consecutive years at the Tigers. Does this beg the question: how long is too long?

It seems tough on a three-time premiership coach to claim he is under pressure but with Richmond investing multiple early future picks for a couple of big-name players over this off-season, the Tigers' premiership window is limited.

There is pressure on Hardwick to squeeze one more premiership out of their stars while they are still capable of performing, even at a much lower level. Riewoldt, Cotchin, Martin, Grimes and Pickett are all 31 or older but can still put together a quality game, kick a crucial goal or make that one inspirational play to motivate their teammates.

When these five stars are gone, it will be hard to see Richmond maintaining their premiership-level success; at least immediately.

For Hardwick, he may feel pressure to add to his coaching legacy further and enter the Alastair Clarkson pantheon level of this era with a fourth premiership.

Many thought Richmond looked like the most dangerous team toward the back end of 2022, and the additions of Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper could be the difference needed to make it on the last day of September once again.

4. Stuart Dew
3. Chris Fagan
2. Ken Hinkley
1. Luke Beveridge

I'm not sure there is much external pressure on Hardwick. I expect most of the footy world to think a pass mark would be a final win. Us, though, expect more. I think expectations for the Richmond faithful is a prelim at the least. With Taranto, Hopper and a fit Dusty, there is genuine excitement and anticipation surrounding the next season. I think we have a good shot at claiming another flag and that sort of hope in the Tiger Tribe can be dangerous. It's a pressure built on a strong realistic, successful foundation. So yes, Dimma is under pressure but it's one driven by hope, not consistent failure. We have an exciting year ahead.

I'd say Dimma is less pressure than Voss or Longmire. Boss misses finals and the jungle drums will beat. Longmire hasn't done anything for an eternity.

Flag or bust Dimma.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
