The Bulldogs have already held conversations with Gold Coast around potentially shifting up to pick No.4 at this year's AFL Draft, with the club considering ways to best maximise its dual first-round selections.

The Suns are looking to trade down from the No.4 selection to amass draft points for Academy guns Jed Walter, Ethan Read and Jake Rogers, and to ensure their opening pick isn't swallowed by early bids for the talented trio.

The Bulldogs currently hold pick No.10 and a later first-round selection tied to Brisbane's finals finishing position.

The Dogs' picks 10 & 17 are worth 2420 points. Pick 4 is worth 2171 points.

“James Harmes is leaving Melbourne,” Sam McClure said on Tradies Podcast.

“He’s basically been frozen out from the team. He won’t play for Melbourne again and hasn’t been in consideration for the senior squad for several weeks (and has now injured his hamstring).

“He’s got four clubs that have enquired about him through his management – Richmond, Carlton, Sydney and Essendon.

“Richmond makes sense I reckon. He’d play every week for Richmond, he’s an experienced mid who can play inside and outside alongside (Jacob) Hopper and (Tim) Taranto and let them go to work.

“For me, he’s Richmond or Sydney bound, those would be my two cents… look out for James Harmes in either those two colours next year.”

Harmes is contracted until the end of 2024 having originally inked a five-year deal with Melbourne in 2019.

TRADE TROUBLE

CLUBS are expecting plenty of trade stand-offs this year as the value of picks after the top 30 decreases in the eyes of list managers and recruiters.

With a shallow draft pool expected – clubs are predicting less than 60 picks are used at the national draft – there is set to be a flow-on for a number of deals that otherwise may be worth second- and third-round selections.

Clubs opting to use three or fewer draft picks may simply not see a value in later draft picks being exchanged for wantaway players, with impasses expected to be common in the trade period due to clubs simply not wanting to use picks past a certain range.

It will likely leave clubs pushing to instead trade for future selections, but the reverse effect of the draft class is that clubs keen to trade in players this year will be largely wanting to use 2023 selections to get deals done.
