Talk of a twilight GF this year.

AFL set to make controversial call for grand final’s return to the MCG

The first AFL Grand Final at the MCG since 2019 looks set to take place in a twilight time slot.

The MCG is guaranteed to host the match this year, but perhaps not at the traditional 2.30pm start time.

7NEWS Melbourne’s Tom Browne reports the AFL Commission will meet next Wednesday to make its decision.

“They are expected to rubber-stamp a historic twilight grand final,” he said.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, who will depart the role at the end of this year, has long wanted to push the grand final into the night.

But he has also acknowledged pushback from fans on the move.

“It was pretty spectacular here ... it was a pretty good slot I thought,” McLachlan said after last year’s grand final in Perth.

“To have the first half in the day, second half in the night, I like where it was - for this stadium I think it went perfectly.

“But MCG’s different - we’ll process it and have a look.

“I don’t think anything should be taken for granted, we’ll have a look at it.

“I know how many people want it during the day at the MCG.

“I think you play it on its merits given the venue, the state, the circumstance.”

Don't mind twilight.

Less bright sun, better viewing.

A million less people watched yesterday's GF compared to 2021 although the ratings were similar to the last day GF in 2019.

So the debate about day vs night GF will be raised again.

Surely the 2020 and 2021 GFs will always be anomalous for the use of comparisons because people were in various lockdowns and had nothing else to do but watch the box.

Have to say comparing the ratings for this year's Grand Final to last year's is laughable

Last years was interstate, Victoria was in some sort of lockdown, so logic tells you the ratings would be higher. Ditto comparison to 2020

To compare an apple with an apple you'd compare the ratings for this year against the ratings for the last one played at the MCG. Think you'll find there is only a very small difference

But any excuse to push for a change ::)

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has hinted at moving the Grand Final to a twilight timeslot for 2023

The timeslot of the AFL decider is often a source of debate, but declining viewership numbers for last year’s match have led to renewed calls for change.

Speaking on AFL 360, McLachlan said a recommendation would be made “in the next few weeks”, but admitted there was a growing push for a later start from some sections of the community.

“As someone who is a traditionalist ... I have noticed just out there that people are a bit more receptive to having a look at something else,” he said.

...

Appearing later on the program, three-time premiership Tiger Jack Riewoldt said he would prefer the match to remain in its current afternoon time slot.

“My memories off the back of the afternoon grand finals in 17’ and 19’ are probably stronger in my mind than 2020, the night one, even though that was the most recent,” he said.

“I just think the afternoon has a spectacle about it, the MCG in sun and that first bounce that goes up, there’s not many feelings like that.

“Whilst the atmosphere of a night grand final might come across better and better for entertainment and the lights and everything, there’s just something about footy folklore about that bounce in the sunlight. I’m an afternoon man.”
