Hardwick leaps to Lynch's defence after Keath collision

A fuming Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has leapt to the defence of Tom Lynch as the star forward gets set to come under scrutiny for a collision that left Alex Keath concussed.

The Western Bulldogs defender was subbed out of his team's five-point win at the MCG on Saturday early in the first quarter after clashing with Lynch.

Keath was backing into a marking contest at halfback when Lynch ran under the ball and made contact with the former first-class cricketer.

Hardwick was perplexed at the thought Lynch could be in any sort of trouble with the match review officer when asked about the incident after the match.

"What for?," Hardwick said.

"I don't know what incident you're talking about."

When pressed further on the issue during a testy exchange, Hardwick said it was a "marking contest".

Hardwick scoffed when told it was raised during Fox Footy's broadcast of the match that Lynch could be in any trouble for the incident.

"If it's raised on the broadcast ... I've listened to the broadcast recently, they're not great," he replied.

"For being tough in the contest? No, I wouldn't have thought (Lynch would be in trouble)."

Lynch was on fire early, kicking the Tigers' only two goals of the first term, but was barely sighted for the rest of the match.

I reckon Lynch only has eyes for the football there until the very last second when he protects himself. Meanwhile, Keath never looked like he was competing for the mark in a meaningful way. He was just running into the path of the ball pretty aimlessly without much awareness or purpose. He must've really misjudged the flight of the ball to put himself in the position he did.

I think Jones needs to be accountable as well, he pushes Lynch into Keath

Didn't see a push myself WP.

Looks like Tom was out of position or misreading the drop and braces for impact with Keath running backwards.

Should be nothing to worry about regardless

Nope.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Lynch had eyes only for the ball right up until the point of impact.  Just before impact (a split second) Lynch dropped his eyes off the ball but still never even looked at Keath coming the other way.  Trying your absolute hardest to clean up another player with a shoulder without ever looking at them is pretty much impossible ...    ::)

I've split the Lynch/Keath "incident" to its own thread here, so it's not mixed up with discussion about Lynch's injury.

"I thought he came across as a sore loser."

@kanecornes calls out Damien Hardwick's response to questions about Tom Lynch, who looks to be in MRO trouble.

'Came across a sore loser': Damien Hardwick grilled over prickly exchange with journo

By Chris De Silva

Kane Cornes has criticised Damien Hardwick's exchange with a journalist after the Tigers coach took offence to being asked about Tom Lynch's bump on Alex Keath, saying he "came across as a sore loser".

Lynch is facing the prospect of a suspension after his bump on Keath resulted in the Bulldogs defender being subbed out of the game in the first quarter through concussion.

Hardwick was questioned by a reporter on his thoughts on the incident, but dodged the question and took a swipe at the broadcast instead, an act which did not sit well with Cornes, a former teammate of his.

"I thought he came across as a sore loser," he told Nine's AFL Sunday Footy Show.

"He clearly knew what the journalist was asking him about and the incident he was referring to, so he played dumb in that moment.

"It's nothing personal with Damien Hardwick. I just think if he had his time again, in the current landscape of football, it's clear that it's going to be a talking point."

Cornes also took aim at Lynch for opting to bump Keath in that situation as opposed to going up for a marking attempt.

"Lynch will miss a game for that, he will get suspended. He had an alternative to mark and he chose to bump," he said.

"Alex Keath is subbed out of the game in the first quarter through concussion and obviously the journalist is not doing his job if he didn't ask that question.

"That's not being tough in a marking contest. That is Tom Lynch once again having an alternative other than marking the footy.

Lynch is likely to be suspended by the MRO for this act which saw Alex Keath subbed out of the game with a concussion (Nine)
"He couldn't mark the footy, he chooses to bump and clearly in today's environment that is going to be looked at, and Damien Hardwick should've been conscious that was going to be a question that was going to come his way post-game."

Tom Lynch could be sent straight to tribunal

Jay Clark

Lynch could be sent straight to the tribunal for concussing Bulldog Alex Keath in a heavy collision on Saturday.

The Tigers face the prospect of losing Lynch for three matches in a massive blow to the club after a slow start to the season.

Lynch was in a marking contest when he jumped off the ground and braced himself for contact to Keath, collecting him to the head.

Keath was concussed, removed from the game, and will miss next weekend’s match.

It means Lynch’s bump, as per the AFL guidelines, could be graded as careless contact, high contact and severe impact, which would mean he is referred straight to the tribunal.

At the tribunal he would face a minimum three-game suspension, sidelining Lynch for games against Sydney Swans, Melbourne and Gold Coast if he is not cleared on grounds he made a genuine attempt to win the football.

The Lynch match review grading would be consistent with the league’s stance on concussions and brain injuries this season, as Kysaiah Pickett’s bump on Bailey Smith was graded as high impact, triggering a two-match ban.

In that incident Smith bounced to his feet and played on.

The Lynch bump on Keath was worse as Keath was concussed and will miss another match against Port Adelaide under league protocols.

At the tribunal he Tigers will likely try and get Lynch off the charge by arguing it was not careless conduct, but accidental contact as part of a genuine attempt to win the ball.

However, Lynch did not touch the Sherrin and was not pushed into Keath.

Even Tom Browne is displaying more common sense than Cornes and Clarke.

Lynch to face tribunal

richmondfc.com.au
9 April 2023

Richmond forward Tom Lynch will front the AFL Tribunal this week following a collision in a marking contest during yesterday's loss to the Western Bulldogs.

Lynch was cited for contact with Alex Keath in the opening term of Saturday’s five-point loss, which saw the Bulldog defender subbed out of the match.

Lynch has been charged with rough conduct (first offence) following the Match Review Officer's review of the game.

The offence has been graded as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

Lol if I was him I wouldn’t even bother showing up. Let them ban him as long as they want, he won’t be playing anyway. Will send a big middle finger to the AFL and their crappy MRO and tribunal system.
