"These are two players that I think they have sold their future for."

@kanecornes on the 'confronting' display for the Tigers' midfield against the Bulldogs, including big name recruits Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper.

Chad has been right on this.

Complete waste of time those boys.

If they don’t improve your position on the ladder and get you making finals then it’s been a disaster no matter what anyone says.

I thought one would be a write off, but 2 and it’s hawthorn #2.

It may also be the end of Dimma as it was for clarko. If they don’t turn out he won’t and shouldn’t last. Hoppers pick may be a top 5 selection we threw away the rate we are going.

I think this is absolutely over kill. A few key points.

1. It's been 4 games.
2. They've been good in all but last game. Hopper was injured and actually played a decent 2nd and 3rd qtr. Went missing in 4th.
3. They have plenty of mates. Prestia has been quiet.
4. I'm not sold that when trading first rounders it's end of the world. We sold future for Prestia and worked out. Just cause of Omera and Wingard examples people are panicking.
5. Our track record of nailing first rounders is ordinary. Lennon, Ellis, Collier Dawkins, Higgins (traded out), Coleman Jones (traded out).
6. Taranto is in same draft as Bolton. Hopper is 1 year older. It's not dinosaurs.

I'm more than happy with this strategy if anything it highlights the issue that from 2017 to 2023 we have 0 first round picks on the list. This was always going to be an issue at some point regardless of Taranto and Hopper trades. The silver lining in this not getting his success in this year or next is that we can do what Hawks have done and on trade them as they are young enough to still have currency.
Go Tigers!

was quite happy for us to go and get Taranto. People do remember how badly we were getting beaten up in Clearances and c/p.
How few big bodied mids we had on the list.

People do remember we were totally devoid of a big bodied Taranto type.
Said at the time i would prefer we keep the hopper picks and not a lot has changed.

Will say again the O'M eara and Mitchell trades were not a bad thing for the Hawks in the context of age and how highly touted they were.

Omeara was just 22 when traded to the Hawks. He was originally taken as the #1 17 yo access player and probably would have gone at 1 in the nd if available. People were raving about him. His problem while at the Suns was injuries. Hawthorn felt they could turn that around. They gave up pick 10 and a future 2nd. Imo he had  been very servicable for them.

Mitchell was just 24 and eventually won a brownlow with them. they gave up pick 16 and 58 for him. When traded by Sydney was in a word prolific and continues to be to this day.

They aquired both these guys in 2016 one year after they won a flag. they obviously thought they were still in a short window and got them but imo had the best of both worlds with these two. Mature enough to improve them straight away but NOT  that old that the future was being sold out.

The one i could never understand was the Wingard trade. 2018 trade and it was clear to even the seeing eye dog that the hawks window was well and truly gone yet they traded in 25 yo wingard for 18, 40 and a future 4th.

For us the only questions we need to ask is. Was it reasonable to think we could win a flag this year by getting Taranto and Hopper?
Did we need to get both?
Did we need a big mature inside mid regardless of premiership window.
Imo the answers are yes, no, and yes.

Personally i have felt for years we needed a big mature mid and we needed to invest in a few kids in this area regardless of what window we were in.

Said at the time just Taranto and keep our pick 34 and stay in the first round this year. Hopper at 26 was just that smidge  on the too old side for me.  that is the mistake we have made.

Imo no one would be saying anything including dick head cornes if we had only taken Taranto.
Have also said premiership or bust in getting both atm it looks like a bust.

With you on this one claw. Regardless of whether we were a realistic chance of winning the flag we needed midfield class to stay competitive and mentor the cubs. Taranto and Hopper fills those needs. I with we got Tom green though

Jon Ralph on twitter:

Dimma threw the toys out of the cot but so would most coaches who knew Nankervis and Lynch were out long term. The free pass the triple premiership coach has now been provided. And the players the Tigers passed up for Taranto-Hopper. You be the judge.

For what it’s worth the Tigers midfield would be in more strife if Taranto-Hopper weren’t there. The seven year nature of the deals are a smokescreen. Both can lift. But it will be interesting where the club’s first rounder they traded away this year ends up landing.

RICHMOND

Strength: Opposition points from turnovers (36 per game) – 3rd

We know Richmond’s defence doesn’t have its reliable personnel anymore from its golden years anymore, but the team is still limiting teams from scoring on turnover. This is a big tick to the way Damien Hardwick is setting up and coaching his troops all across the field.

Question mark: Points from forward half intercepts (18 per game, down from 35) – 17th, down from 1st

The Tigers, who’ve underwhelmed after many tipped them to return to flag contention in the pre-season, have most alarmingly fallen right away in forward half turnovers after ranking 1st in the area last season. This suggests the forward line isn’t as hard without the ball, which couldn’t be said about Hardwick-coached teams of recent years. That manic pressure was a trademark of their premiership years and if it’s gone, you have to wonder what the trademark of this crew actually is?

Our famous pressure is gone..

You don’t need a team of superstars (2017). But you need a team uncompromising to our system.

 We are finished
The club that keeps giving.
