Dimma post-game:

* We couldn't capitalise on our momentum. Especially in the 3rd quarter. Kicked 1.5 [ed. actually 1.6]. Swans did in the last and the score heavily.

* Got to get better at our smarts and execution in our forward line.

* Discipline especially was extremely poor tonight. Two 50m goals we gave them. You can't defend against that.

* Dimma mentioned Balta was meant to push forward and let others roll back. Just play your role.

* Need to be cleaner and better with skill execution. Gave up 8 goals from the forward half because of turnovers. We are missing kicks we should kick. You hit them you're having a shot; if they just fall short then the ball ends up going the other way.

* Swans had a superstar in Papley who kicked 6 and we didn't.

Dimma slams Tigers' ill-discipline

Damien Hardwick says some of his team's decisions on Friday were 'ridiculous', while there's no guarantee any injured stars will return next week for Sydney

DAMIEN Hardwick has lamented Richmond's "incredibly poor" lack of discipline as the Tigers slumped to their third consecutive defeat.

Richmond has managed just one win from the opening five rounds and fell to Sydney by 44 points at Adelaide Oval, with Tom Papley cutting through the Tigers with six goals.

Hardwick's side got to within seven points of the Swans at three-quarter time before last year's Grand Finalists ran away with the contest, with the Richmond coach unhappy with what he saw.

"We've got to get better first and foremost with our smarts and ball execution inside 50 and I thought our discipline was incredibly poor tonight. There were a couple of incidents we just look at and go 'It's just ridiculous what we're doing' so we'll chat to the boys about that," Hardwick said.

"At the end of the day, it's all good to push and shove but the reality is you've got to pick the ball up. That's tough footy sort of stuff. I'm disappointed with that and our fans will be and I'm sure they [the players] will be when they see them."

Hardwick said it hadn't been a trend across Richmond's season, but that costly moments had come back to bite the Tigers in the Gather Round clash.

"I actually think we've been pretty good. We certainly had a focus on reducing our number of free kicks and it's been a lot better this year but we let ourselves down. They kicked two 50-metre penalty goals and they were just easy goals you can't defend against," he said.

Richmond drew with Carlton in round one and followed it with a win over Adelaide in round two but has now had successive losses against Collingwood, the Western Bulldogs and Swans, with Hardwick saying the Tigers were "disjointed".

Really don't think ill discipline was the issue tonight. Sure want perfect and needs to be better.

But turnovers, clangers and easy missed shots. I wonder how much is linked to fitness.

Fox Footy was critical because all four 50m penalties were by senior players - Kmac, Bolton, Pickett, Balta. Also most of them occurred when we had the momentum and it killed it gifting cheap goals to the Swans.

What about the missed shots eg Cotchin's miss in 2nd. For most of the game we were very poor. The problem is poor skills and disposal. Our poor disposal cost us goals. We could have been level at the first quarter break but for our woeful disposal.

And that was a soft 50 to begin with.was a gift and he blew it.

The Tigers had few AFL-listed players in their VFL line-up on Friday, proving the depth of the list is being challenged severely just five rounds into the season.

“It looks a little bit disjointed at the moment because we’ve got four changes then four changes and all those sort of things. But the side that we played are a little bit the same,” he said. “They just had a superstar in Papley stand up and kick six goals, which is the difference.

“We’re just not executing our offence well enough. We’re missing kicks that we should kick, there’s a couple of players that if we just had have kicked the ball to grass, we probably scored two goals. We leave it short, a guy marks it, goes back the other way for a goal just prior to three quarter-time. Those sorts of things we’ve just got to better.”

Asked if he felt like his hands were tied considering the lengthy injury list, Hardwick said: “No I expect us to be better than what we’re delivering at the moment. We’re not where we need to be. We know the things we’ve got to fix.

“Sides will go through injuries, but we’ve got to get our players playing to a more acceptable standard for longer. We’ve got splits and spurts – that doesn’t cut it in the AFL. It’s such an even competition and if you fall away by 10 per cent, as we did in the last quarter, you get belted.”

Not fit enough an clearly didn’t use balls during preseason.

It’s a concerning trend. The youngsters have a lower standard to achieve to get games now the can gift games for just being available.

Our standards are dropping faster than Bill Clintons pants.  :rollin

The club that keeps giving.

Be interested to know what the club paid USA trip Hardwick went on has done to improve us. Seeing as it would have been quite costly and delayed our coaches start to pre season.

When things aren't working these things are unfortunately scrutinised.

Who said the Club paid?

I'd respectfully suggest it didn't

It would come out of the soft cap if it did and we all know the Cub doesn’t spend over the cap.

And he was also over their visiting his sister as he has said in interviews

So if I was a Gambier I'd say the Club didn't pay

I think standards have slipped on and off the field without a doubt from fitness and medical to the coaches group not making enough hard calls on players , or involving our structure and game plan we still haven't come to terms with new rules yet out of all the clubs.

In what world can you justify balls not being used during pre season in professional sport.  :wallywink
We had 4 AFL listed players in the reserves, it’s not a matter of low standards as it is pure necessity.

There are 3 issues as I see it:-
* Injuries have cost us dearly. You cannot replace what we have out atm. As shocking as we were vs Bulldogs for all bar 15 minutes, we lost that game through injuries.
* Confidence is at an all time low - why? Who knows but we have our best defenders punching when they should be marking, midfielders fumbling and missing basic targets by hand and foot they would normally nail and forwards who have stopped leading into space. You lose confidence then drop off in skills when that happens
*Discipline is a huge issue and I blame the leadership at the team for that. Shai Bolton should not be giving away 50’s in his 7the year in the system.

On the one hand, I wonder if we have the talent to execute this game plan, on the other I wonder if the coach is aware enough to evolve with this player list like he did in the back half of 2016.

I remember early in that year, it was one step back to tale two steps forward. That courage landed us 3 flags.

Dimma, you implored the players to “take the stairs, not the lift” in this preseason.
I am now asking - how are you getting them off the bottom floor?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
